Luton Town 1 - 1 Everton

I had the comfort of not having to leave too early due to Luton not being too far away for me and the late kick-off time. I did feel for those Merseyside Evertonians making the journey down and god knows what time they got home. No consideration for the supporters with the scheduling of fixtures, but it’s become expected.

Without being disrespectful, Luton is not a nice town, to be honest. I got to the station and there was a pub opposite, so I headed there. The usual “home supporters only”, but I tried my chances. The doormen checked my ticket, spoke to me and were in no doubt which side I was on. They smiled and let me in.

A strange place. Considering it was match day, not many Luton supporters in there and most were playing pool and they had snooker on the tele. I thought they might have at least put Sky Sports on.

I headed off and found a nice place called the Sugar Loaf. Lots of Luton supporters in there and some healthy banter. They were intrigued with me! I’m not sure why, I am just a football supporter like them.

Off to the ground and I met Neil. He had travelled down without a ticket. I couldn’t have that, so insisted he took mine. I now know Neil well and he would return the favour. I’m glad he got into the ground after putting in those miles.

For me, back to the station. I eventually got back to one of my locals to catch the second half. I have to admit, I’m more and more uncomfortable watching on the tele than in the ground. I don’t know how some of you do it. And those who listen on the radio, I had to give that up decades ago, as the nerves couldn’t handle it. I have to see, thinking I can somehow control it!

From what I watched, it wasn’t pleasant. A poor performance from both teams. But the pink Echo lady would have been showing a point. I don’t have a lot to say about the match as it was pretty dour from what I watched.

Branthwaite again was good. Tarkowski showing his usual leadership. Idrissa his usual self. Pickford was good in collecting the ball. And Ben Godfrey seems to be coming back into it. You can't knock his effort and determination. It’s different to judge when you’re not there.

I hope all the travelling supporters got home safely. I had my sister checking up on me. She worries about me when I travel to see Everton even though I’ve been following them all of my life!

Sheffield United next and on to 40 points. The appeal may give us back 2 more. I know he has his critics, but the manager deserves respect for shielding the team from the circus and keeping them focused on the only thing they can affect.

And then the Emirates on the last day. We are due one there.

Why didn’t we wear blue?

A special Thank You to Danny O'Neill. I travelled yesterday without a ticket in the hope of getting one en-route or at the ground. I tried but none were available.

Danny gave me his ticket!!! He insisted I take it and refusing was not an option.

Danny, I am eternally grateful mate, thank you so much – top man and I owe you big time.

Great gesture, Danny, you're a gent who gave his ticket to another gent.

Glad you got in, Neil, and I know you'll return the favour when it is needed.

What a great gesture, Danny. Not sure I could have done the same thing though.

What I will say is that you didn't miss much, in terms of the ground anyway, as you seem to have seen a fair bit of the game on the TV. What an absolute dump of a ground Kenilworth Road is. Granted, they have been out of the top flight of English football for donkey's years, even spending some time out of the Football League altogether, and thus not having any money to re-develop it. How it passed Premier League standards, god knows?

Coaches left Goodison at 1 pm and we were parked up outside the ground by 5:30 pm. I say 'outside the ground', but you wouldn't know it as it was behind terraced houses, with the turnstiles built in between two houses.

Once entering through the turnstiles, it was like you were in someone's backyard. Above us were bathroom and living room windows. You could probably open one of those windows and scale down the walls into the away end!

We ended up in a Wetherspoons away from the ground, and got talking to a Luton fan who told us of his experience when visiting Anfield. He said him and a couple of mates, wearing Luton shirts, went to go into the Arkles pub and got threatened, and told to leave. As there was nowhere else for them to go, they just went into the stadium. What a gang of scumbags that lot are.

Anyway, game was far from a classic, but as we were already safe, we had no nerves and I suppose a draw was just about the right result. We had a smooth journey home, getting back to the Rocket about 1:50 am. One away game left, which we're on the train for, before we can relax for a couple of months!

A long day for you Rob. Glad you got back to the Rocket safely.

I've just been looking. If we win the remaining matches and without the points deductions, we would be on over 50 points.

Great gesture Danny, but, in the interests of self preservation, I’d weigh Melanie in pretty soon if I were you.😁👍🏻

Just shows how poor our football has been when even Danny ONeil gives up his ticket rather than watch!
Neil, I wish I’d known you needed a ticket. I was offered one on Thursday but I’d already promised the wife a dinner at cote (with the condition that I got home for the second half) so I didn’t take it up. I’m not as brave as some on here to risk the wife’s wrath and stand her up. Tbh she’s perimenopausal at the mo and I’m fcuking terrified of her!!!
I’m done for this season now so I’ll see you (Danny, Rob, Neil and all) next season.
Thanks for the great company at the games I’ve been - I’m missing the Harlech already!

Tony @ 16 - shit yeah, I see that now!

Mel, if you're still on here, every time I'm with Danny at games he goes on and on about you like you're Cleopatra reincarnate.

He says if you could cook as good as you look, he'd give up Everton and stay home with you.

(Hope that helps, Danny boy 😘)

Very late on this thread but teams not wearing their
proper colours when they can is just another little
nail in the game’s coffin.

I will stay out of the domestic complexities there, Danny and Melanie, but I certainly agree about how painful it is to watch on TV and as for the radio — torture.

Wonderful gesture, Danny; made up you got into the ground Neil.

Knowing you a little by now, Danny, you did not see this as some sort of heroic, selfless and generous gesture to be lauded and admired, but as what an Evertonian in those precise circumstances should do for another Evertonian.

Good on you!

A few seasons ago, I went to a lot of away games and tended to register with the home club (which inevitably has led to me receiving far too many subsequent emails about Watford, Fulham, West Ham, Stoke City etc) but it did the trick. Yes, you'll be in with the home fans and need to keep a low profile but it tended to go well.

I know some Evertonians might dislike that notion though!

Rob @ 10

Your description is spookily familiar to me. The worrying thing being, I haven't been to Kenilworth Road since 1991. It does make you wonder how Kenilworth got approved as a Premier League ground this season?

Danny - your description of Luton was very, erm... diplomatic (?)
