Investment Issues:- The Final Straw Part 1

By Joe Jennings :  15/07/2007 :  Comments (15) :

I feel the need to take the unprecedented option and reveal all about a former ?potential investor?

Browsing the internet almost a year ago, I stumbled across an interesting e.mail address. A name perhaps familiar to Evertonians. The Brunei based businessman Chris Samuelson, who was spearheading the Fortress Sport Fund bid to take over Everton, allegedly.

Promising shareholders the money was in place, standing tall with Kenwright, the money NEVER materialised. As intrigued as I was, I decided to let Samuelson know exactly how I felt. Perhaps an angry, somewhat childish e.mail was sent; however, it certainly suppressed my acrimony. Expecting no response, I was nothing short of amazed when I received a six-paragraph response from the man himself. Respectful I had to accept. Below is the the first installment Samuleson had to offer.

I was told: "If you knew the facts behind the scenes and the efforts done by me on behalf of EFC, you would not make such comments.

"I was asked to find a very rich investor with a real love of football, and ideal for the Toffees, by Bill Kenwright. I did within two weeks of the original request, and not just once. The first one was perfect but he hates publicity and when it came he had to withdraw. He promised to return but did not. The second one died very quickly having been diagnosed with cancer.

"Since then, I have approached at least 20 others that had the right credentials and that?s not just the money. They must love football and have no allegiance to another Premier League club and want to full heartedly support Everton and back the club with the necessary capital. They have ranged from Arabs to Russians to Asians and to Americans. There are few English candidates with the resources that meet the criteria.

"I have devoted a huge amount of time and effort and no little amount of cash ? at least £200,000 in expenses and that excludes what the prospective investors spent on legal and accountancy fees. Discussions continue and we have come close, very close on several occasions. Keith Wyness and I speak every day.

"It is better for Everton to be patient and wait until we find the right person with the belief and the commitment plus of course the money. Finding that person has become a mission for me. If I am not the one to succeed, I will still rejoice when it happens. So when you tell me that I don?t deserve to step inside the shrine that is Goodison Park, I doubt if you would say that if you knew the facts. Fortress Sports Fund was an investment vehicle created for our original investor and available to be used by the investor when he is found.

"Bill Kenwright is a true Blue through and through but he and Jon Woods don?t have the financial resources to invest more money in the Club, but they know the Club is bigger than them and will take a smaller role when the new investor is found. Gregg doesn?t give a damn about the Toffees. He came on board only because he smelt profits with a new stadium deal. Everton?s board devote their time freely, the only board in the Premier League that does not reward itself. The exception is Keith Wyness, to my mind the best CEO in football and he has transformed Everton?s finances. David Moyes is an astute and motivating manager who has succeeded with limited resources."

Now I personally do not know whether the supposed things that Chris brought up are true. However, I do know that it contradicts most of the voices coming out of the club. By the sounds of the e.mail I received there certainly has been ?serious investment? interest. The information above was from an e.mail received almost a year ago. Since then I have been told investment is on the horizon time and time again. I felt now was the time to reveal all to the Evertonians who want answers, deserve answers, and to give them more of an insight than the club ever possibly could.

Why is any of that "the final straw"? Sounds fairly positive to me if true.

Especially positive is the strict criteria in weeding out investors with short-term or conflicting priorities.

Initially I wondered whether it was actually him. I’m still undecided.

if this genuine, then this goes to show there are always two sides to every story.

i hope the search is still going on in earnest and produce a positive conclusion sooner rather than later.

At the end of last season we should have been a very attractive prospect, however next season might be different. Without strengthening our squad with quality rather than quantity(we’re not even doing that) i can see us doing our usual one good season followed by one bad season.
Plus the fact we’re be on a tesco car park in Kirby with a reduced fan base.

who’ll have us then.

God i hope i’m wrong.

I,m just not having this piece Joe.It’s just to neatly packaged for my liking. All of a sudden when fans are unhappy and asking questions, this e-mail just pops up out of the blue.It makes Gregg out to the baddy, and Kenwright to be some sort of a martyr. Also,Wyness and Moyes are given some sort of miracle worker tag.And suprise, suprise it states that there has been plenty of investment oppurtunities, but the right person hasn’t been found yet.Evertonians are not stupid Joe,and a lot of them will see it for what it is,a load of bullshit.Apart fom the apologists who will be creaming in their pants as they are reading it.

I can understand why you would think it was a load of bull. It is too neatly packaged. As I said I received this almost a year ago now and I have had several since. I’m still questioning whether it is Samuelson. I was trying to outline that we have been fed stories in the past, like this one that just dont happen.

I think you hit the nail on the head Joe when you said"we have been fed stories in the past, like this one that just don’t happen"

I think that it is fairly plausable as a response, but you haven?t fully explained how you came by this address and whether you?ve taken steps to establish it?s authenticity.

We?d all like to believe that this is true, but Samuelson does have a pretty dubious past and I would be wary of him under any circumstances. Notwithstanding, I?m getting tired with some of the responses on here, the e-mail does not describe Moyes or Wyness as miracle workers, it simply states that he?s done well with limited resources and that Wyness is one of the best (I wouldn?t have a clue).

One thing which does add credibility is the knowledge that a lot of clubs are now being snapped up and you?ve got to be certain that EFC are a more attractive propostion than most, with that in mind maybe there is more than a grain of truth. I wouldn?t feel comfortable if the club was owned by a Lerner or a Gillet and as frustrated as I am I will stick with Bill if they?re the alternative.

Sorry Joe, I?m not having that. Is this part of the ?no sense of humour on TW these days? debate?First of all the manner in which it is written does not say to me this is a guy who has contact with millionaires/billionaires, not very business like/professional, (?and the efforts done by me??). If I remember rightly Fortress was a consortium, not a single investor and if the reasons for it collapsing,(?didn?t like publicity?, but wants to buy a PL club?), if it ever existed, were as stated then it would have been easy for EFC to explain this to everybody and not continue, because continue it does, with a ?say fuck all and it might go away? stance.
For obvious legal reasons, any businessman of such supposed standing would be very unlikely to slate a person like Gregg to you, let alone in writing, besides the fact that Gregg was invited to invest in EFC by BK and apparently loaned BK money for his ?share?.
Also, I didn?t realise that Samuelson was an Evertonian as using terms like ?Toffees? in this context and ?the shrine that is GP? would be unlikely to be used by a ?non believer?.
It?s also nice to know that this guy has kept you informed on his progress.
So IMO someone?s taking the piss, whether that?s you or a third party we probably won?t know and really don?t care.

I said 6 paragraphs mate. I just find it peculiar that he has continually kept me informed. To be honest I don't believe a word he has said, and why should I? I just find it interesting some of the things he says ??talks with Wyness?? daily etc etc and felt that people may be interested in what he had to say. I'm not trying to con anyone, just felt people would be intrigued by such comments. Apologies if people have been cursing this piece.

The biggest giveaway and the biggest insult to our intelligence is "The exception is Keith Wyness, to my mind the best CEO in football and he has transformed Everton?s finances". Too laughable for words. Just ask David Moyes how much he’s got in his transfer kitty. End of.

interesting , that suggests that the middle man ?samuelson? has been continuing to find investment all this time.

it also a clear statement that we need an investor , as bk is a pauper.

id like to know if samuelson had any part in the robert earl deal ?
