COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY
From my seat: Spurs (a)
No change in the line up from Saturday and I wondered how we would fair against the £40M Spurs strike force. After 3 mins, our pauper-like strike force, in comparison, had struck ? a wicked out-swinging cross from Arteta was met by the head of Lescott that sent a downward bullet header into the top corner.
The Spurs began to play with much more purpose and penned us back and Bent was causing some concern with his pace against Stubbs and their midfield sensing this went into the old Spurs push-and-run mode and in that spell you could just see a goal coming... yet when it did it was down to a moment of aberration from the otherwise excellent Lescott who ran under the ball rather than attacking it.
Would we now be over-run, could we respond? Inch by inch, yard by yard, we began to wrestle back some control in midfield aided by the excellent use of AJ's ability to run both channels and cause panic in their back four by holding the ball up whilst Ossie, Mikel and Big Vic worked hard to give him an option. Carsley and Neville guarded against quick breakaways and this slow but sure application of pressure saw reward when Arteta got free on the right via a fortuitious deflection and put over a delightfully 'dinked' cross to the far post where big Vic caused centre-back and keeper to clash and fall comically into the net while the ball fell to Ossie, who sized up the situation in a flash and left-footed balloned the net.
The rain still bucketed down but it was Blue rain and the Blue shirts whether defending or pushing on were as one and Spurs players and fans alike showed frustration.
This approach of applying pressure by feeding AJ in the channel and then backing him up worked again on the cusp of half-time when Arteta won a free kick in a somewhat central position and after a consultation period with Stubbs it was the centre-back's piledriver that found the net via a Spurs foot. Oh happy day! 3-1 up at the break.
No changes at half-time save for Yobo picking up Bent and Stubbs taking the out-of-sorts Berbatov. Cue end of any Bent pace threat. Spurs as expected flew from the traps and after three minutes Berbatov hit a post and that proved to be a significant point.
The Blues played the away game to perfection, everyone working for each other, quickly closing down all over the park, and always looking for that quick breakaway which kept Spurs nervous and us resolute. Jol tried to shuffle the pack but to no avail; Bent was hauled off in favour of Defoe who gave Howard one moment of glory by turning away his fierce shot.
By now, we ruled midfield and Spurs looked and played in a dispirited fashion not helped by a mass exodus of their fans while ours chanted 'were gonna win the league'.
Before the end, our breaks were cutting through what was left of a Spurs rearguard and the score could have reached six. I was almost willing AJ to get off the mark after his selfless performance.
Looking for a man of the match? Wll take your pick: Ossie would be up there but I would give it to THE TEAM who produced a night of togetherness where one could not do without the other.
A great start to the season... now if only we could get in a top-class midfielder, striker and wideman before deadline day then I think a few more teams will feel the power of the Blues. Not an easy task these days but here's hoping.
Reading next and another good test, I hope Yobo's limp was nothing serious and with a bit of luck the manager can call for same again. Top of the league with two games gone ? how nice would that be with two games to go! I'll keep on dreamin'... see you soon! UP THE BLUES

Cheats do prosper it seems
Haven’t got the ball, take the man instead that’s the next best thing.
We won, Tottenham lost, we spent little on our team in the summer, Tottenham spent loads and Darren Bent looked well worth £16 million (I’m being sarcastic by the way).
Accept defeat, it’s not our fault Tottenham are yet to pick up a point with their multi-millionaire team.
If i had to name one player than it would have to be Arteta, i thought he was outstanding.
Good luck for the season.
Bitter, bitter Spursch.
who would be your back two if you had your first 4 injured.
genuine question
We are usually Dull ? would you be refering to the last time we played at your gaff ? if memory serves me right, our 10 men didnt give you a kick all afternoon !
Dawson, and Robinson will kick the ball higher and further and more often, than any other players in the prem this season, lets face it they have done for the last two seasons, as for you midfield Osman Mcfadden and more obviously Artista have more skill and flair than your hole midfield, face facts, Spurs havent played decent football since Klinsman left, think we played you off the park in the semi then too
As for Spur fans being unique, I’ll give you that, I can honestly say I’ve never been in a stadium so quiet, except when you were booing your own players, mind you, last night they emptied the stadium quicker than any fans I’ve ever seen . . . .15 minutes BEFORE the end
Arteta I wil accept is a fine player. but i think you have let the occasion of beating a top 5 team undeniably well out of sorts go to your head a bit. McFadden and Osman above Lennon?
like i said a shit performance from spurs and a superb one from you has given you the points. well done, you can only beat whats in front of you.
Have a look at some of the goals Mcfadden has scored, your headless chicken has’nt nor ever will score anything like them, we regularly beeat top teams mate, Arsenal + Lpool only got a point of us and chelsea got a very lucky draw against us at the bridge, its the poor sides we struggle against, which is why last nights hammering - dispite missing our brightest young players - was a relief
Top 5 ? last time I looked you were bottom
think you’ll stay up ?
spurs normally open the show.
exciting you see.
as for trophy counts, well there you have made a common error. spurs fans by definition have decided to forgo success for a rollercoaster of brilliance and stupidity. its fun you see. its supposed to be, its only a game.
you dont have excitement or success. hence the anger at spurs who are very very exciting - (well normally)!
4-3s, 3-3 , 5-4s . who knows whats next.
you do with everton though, 0-0, 1-0, 0-1 isnt it.
Great cup wins in the eighties though..credit where credit is due. and chas ’n dave... Pure class
Great cup wins in the eighties though..credit where credit is due. and chas ’n dave... Pure class
unless of course we are being pedantic in an attempt to win an argument, in which case at this precise moment in time Utd cant claim to be a top half side.
interesting that again you can know so much history of spurs. i cant name your last or in fact any cup success for everton ’exciting’ FC.
All that aside, Spurs have a great coach and some great talent - the potential is there, but on last nights evidence, Spurs don’t look like a TEAM capable of pushing the so called top 4 (why the hell L’Pool are bracketed in there is beyond me, no title triumph since 1990)..
I wish Spurs well, but they really have no grounds to lord it over Everton..
Your that exciting, 30 thousand people quite literally ran out of your ground last night - apparently big brother was on - check last years goal diff mate while your waiting for MOTD, in the meatime if we dont score another goal till november you may equal ours this season
cheer up mate, think of the excitement you’ve had down the years not winning all them trophies
but before you go, if Spurs are so incredibly exciting why are your fans the biggest bunch of moaners in the game, or more to the point why are you on our website ?
the spurs one down ?
just Joking, Spurs are a terrific watch, You’ll illuminate the championship
Did anyone notice during our graveyard slot against Wigan, the shot of Ossie towlling down in the dugout having been replaced by Pienaar, then cut to the set piece, and there’s Ossie, hanging around the edge of the box!
Did anyone tape it?Would have been hell to play if it had involved McDonalds Utd!
Oh, wait - Tottenham lost didn’t they. My mistake, of course, Everton must have cheated! It can’t have been that they played better.
The way Spurs fans have been bigging it up pre season, I was expecting to see a cross between the 1970 Brasil world cup team and Real Madrid; in fact they are shite.
As for being the "b" team...who exactly from your injured list would be playing??? king, lennon and bale (unproven as yet). we had baines, cahill and vaughan, all of whom would have been in the starting 11. so it was like for like (plus yobo played injured...i suppose you lot don’t understand character tho). You’d have thought a team who has spent more than united, liverpool and arsenal in the past 2 seasons might have a couple of half decent players to fill in (not that they would have affected the outcome of the game). Jol doesn’t understand the concept of "tactics". He puts out 11 (mostly decent to be fair) individuals and hopes for the best. Moyes gave him a free lesson last night.
And another little point, we won by 3 goals more than we did 1-0 last season, and +16 GD suggests we have a little excitement. Why don’t all you fucking spurs fans fuck off from out fan site back to yours. You’re a joke of a club. You’ve never been in the prem top 4, and you never will. We are already one up on you on that. And if anyone breaks it this season it will be us. Cheerio now.
As for our majestic, wonderful selves, thoroughly deserved victory, everyone deserves so much praise. Howard commanded the box brilliantly for me. His decision making was perfect. Arteta might need help against the likes of reading though, i can see them doubling up on him all day on saturday! A couple more signings and I’m very optimistic. COYB
Some things were the same though, Kopites were still gobshites and from the mealie mouth sour grapes responses to Ken Buckley’s excellent match review - so are some Spurs supporters.
You’ve been beaten by a better team twice in two seasons at your own manor- deal with it
even if you won the league I doubt anyone would notice.
last perhaps....?
wonder why.
...Quite!
You were beaten, get over it and move on.
Mr. Jol, your boys took one hell of a beating :-)
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.
hahahahahah
And as for match of the day, there’s a reason spurs are on first, it’s only u sad cockneys who bother to watch it. The rest of the world has sky and watches football first. Nobody cares about Hansen and Lawrenson’s views on the game.
And if you think your better than us then just take a look at the league. And the next time we play you things could be alot worse for you lot, baines, cahill, vaughan mite be bak and Fernandes and Yakubu mite be around too.
9 leagues, 5 f.a cups, ecwc winners among other honours. Accept it, your just not good enough. GOING DOWN, GOING DOWN, GOING DOWN, GOING DOWN, GOING DOWN, GOING DOWN...!!
COYB
Booing their own team, leaving early to voice bitter rants on opposition fan sites?
It is one of the best feelings in the world being there and taking part but I can not explain how proud it made me feel hearing our support through the speakers on my TV! Clear as day word for word. Pure brilliance
Their boo’s in between song just topped it off though ahaha.
This is better than sex..bring on the shite..20 fuckin million for the 6th top scorer in spain and half of them pens...I cant fuckin wait.. COYB.. here we go here we go here we go...

Couple of things tho...
1)Victor spread the ball to Arteta who crossed for the 2nd goal.
and Victor also won the free kick for the 3rd goal
