A good transfer decision

By John Holmes :  29/08/2007 :  Comments (21) :
With the club taking a hell of a lot of flak, some justifiable, some excessive, over its summer transfer (and some bloke with dreadlocks), I thought it was worth pointing out what's looking like a spectacularly good decision.

Nugent, who many fans on here were baying for the club to sign, has been so unimpressive for Portsmouth that Harry is shipping him out after just 4 games which included my favourite moment of the season so far. Home debut, played in on goal with no one within 10 yards, fell over! Not over the ball, not over a bump in the turf, just fell over!!!

Personally, I was always suspicious of a player whose best exploits were in League 1 and seemed to be more linked with the club by his own desire to play for it than any real will on the club's part to sign him. Nonetheless, his agitating got him his move and it seems he's been proved spectacularly out of his depth. Kudos to Moyes for putting a value on the man and sticking to it. Decent punt at £4M as cover prior to Vaughan's injury? Maybe. £6M star man? Nonsense. Mind you... you have to feel sorry for the lad.

Is anybody actually aware of what time Yakubu’s appeal is today?

I have to say none of the pre season names really interested me either, I could not see how any of the Nugents, Koumas, Smith, Richardsons, Bartons would actually benefit us in any other way but additional numbers.
The only time I was excited was when we were linked to Lucho Gonzalez and Fernandes.
Yakubu is a quality addition, but we need to provide the ammunition from other parts of the pitch rather than just Arteta. This is why I do not think Stephen Appiah is the right signing for us either he looks to similiar a player to what we have in Cahill and Pienaar. I hope we sign someone creative with flair-for me the best achieveable option out there is Nakamura for Celtic. He is absolute class for them and has been consistently the best player week in week out. He is young, hungry, and also has a massive fan base in Japan and may bring some commercial revenue in from over there. Appiah although a good scoring record does not have enough creativity for me.
Nakamura can play anywhere in Midfield but is mainly used on the right-imagine Arteta and him switching causing mayhem. Nakamura for Everton!

Completely agree with you about Nakamura Danny. However, he is 29 and has supposedly been branded with an £8 million price tag.

Some good news at last; the Yak attack is with us.

with two days to go,any chance of a minor miracle and a decent central midfielder joining us before 5.0 p.m. Friday?

John Holmes, couldn’t agree more re the Nugent saga. It has been public knowledge for a few days that Pompey ’may be prepared to let him go’ and ’arry has been trying to say as diplomatically as possible that he is out of his depth. Have we seen anyone scrambling for his signature? ManUre are in need of a striker, but no hint of a sniff at him. Even City, who will buy anyone that farts at the moment, are not showing interest. Fair play to Moyes for sticking to his guns. That said, if we could get him for £3mill(ish), I would not be unhappy. He will be good squad cover and may even prove us all wrong.

Wouldnt even want him as squad cover as we have AJ, Yak, Vaughn, Anachebe and Macfadden.

We need a creative midfielder on the left so want any money to go on that.

As i have said before about any player, if he (Nugent)is not good enough at £6m he will not become a better player at £3m for example, you are still wasting good money, understand you people ? ? As for Appiah, if he comes then thank your lucky stars, a tank of a man, strong as an oxx and with skill, to compare him with Neville/Carsley skill wise is a joke, however if he has their work ethic he would be a hell of a signing, best player on the pitch when Ghana lost to Brazil in the world cup

Bit foolish to say he’s crap after 4 games aren’t you John? I wonder if 4 days after you had started your job, people were suggesting sacking you? Would have been a bit OTT don’t you think?

Anyway, you have now ut the curse on and whatever else he does, I’ll wager he scores against us!!!

Glad to see Yakubu finally signing. Hopefully he will bring some much needed goals both himself and AJ.

We still need strengthen in midfield however so close to the windows end I don’t think we will.

Come on Moyes prove me wrong and get another body in not a panic buy but someone who could make a difference.

Regards Appiah a good shout but my concern would be the African cup of nations. What would happen if 5 of our squad did one in one foul swoop.

We are crying out or extra creativity from the middle. Could that not come in the form of Arteta? Bring him inside and free up the wide berths for Pienaar, Osman and Van De... ok i wouldn’t go that far but you get the picture. Creative midfielders in the mould of Fernandes are at a premium but why not go for a conventional wide man like Downing and put Arteta in the middle? Personally, i’d break the nank for Huddlestone but guess that’s a bit left-field. j

I’m happy with the Yak.. great signing.. we need goals.. he’ll score and will help AJ score too.

Now with this central midfielder.. in my opinion he needs to be creative and can tackle extremely well.. a lot like Patrick Vieira. I say this because this midfielder needs to play first team with Cahill and a central midfield pair with let’s say.. Cahill, Riquelme... or Cahill, Van der Vaart.. would definitely not work.

So the best player of this calibre? Has to be Stephen Appiah... so I really hope Moyes brings him to Everton.

Anyone still seriously calling for VDM to be given a chance is losing the plot. He’s had chances but failed to take them. The problem is that although he hasn’t been in the first team much he clearly isn’t committed to getting there. He doesn’t play well for the reserves, he’s constantly annoying Moyes his unprofessional behaviour and he’s always getting injured.
