Divisions

By Steve Guy :  24/09/2007 :  Comments (16) :
There seems to be an increasing divide between the fan's perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of Moyes's management style and that of the Board who employ him and the player's who he has recruited.

Some fans seem to think he is poor tactically and has 'taken us as far as he can'; whilst the Board are allegedly about to offer him a new deal so obviously (one assumes) disagree. The players talk of him as a great coach and mentor.

It might be worth opening up a thread about why this should be the case. Is it that fans are fickle and a run of good results will see their perception of Moyes become more positive? Is it that the Board (and Moyes) have a longer-term view of the Club's objectives and short-term results / performances are not relevant to that 'big picture'?

I wish I knew the answer for certain, but I do believe that, whilst he has their loyalty at present, Moyes may soon 'lose the players' if they don't get a better grasp of his tactics and gameplan soon. If this site is to be believed he has certainly 'lost' some of the fans.

I hope the Board don't hand over that new contract until we see the results improve; with the players playing with much more self-belief than seems evident at the moment. Getting rid of him after the ink has dried will be very expensive.

Hi Steve,

Many have been quick to jump on the bandwagon of blaming Moyes and I think this is slightly unfair, I think some of the blame lies at his feet but events have been conspiring against him and the team since the close-season... some of this was as a result of ineptitude shown by the board.

The personnel available should ALWAYS dictate the tactics and style of play (think dogs-of-war circa 1995)... the team has reverted to hoofball largely because Mikel Arteta is not there as the main outlet...

The recurring injury to Tim Cahill , the injury to Thomas Gravesen and crucially the board’s inability to sign Manuel Fernandes permanently have been significant contributory factors to the current on-field malaise...

Anyone with even a modicum of creativity would have been able to slow down play where appropriate, dictate the tempo of the game and manufacture openings for our strikers against both Metallist and Villa...

We had no-one to fulfil that role so Moyes / the team resorted to long balls and a consequence our strikers got to feed off scraps... do you really think that Neville, Jagielka and Carsley can suddenly acquire the ability to ping the ball about with ease like Scholes or Fabregas... get real, this is not what they do.

Moyes hasn’t ’lost’ the players in the sense of ’losing the dressing room’ ... he has just lost all of the players with a creative spark; temporarily. I am sure, given the return of ’any of the above’ we will turn the corner... perhaps even the mystery Brazilian will realise the promise he showed in pre-season now he is match fit... I would not be surprised to see him start against Sheff Wednesday and be the star of the show...

Matt,I just don’t agree with your quote "the team has reverted to hoofball largely because Arteta is not there as the main outlet"Even when Cahill and Arteta are both in the side the football we play is still shite most of the time, and the hoofball is still there for all to see. Most of last season was dire to watch, even with these players in the side.

I for one are glad that Kenwright & Co are running the club rather than the loony fringe whose shrill voices are constantly given space on here.
Imagine some nutter like Tony Marash running the club...we’d be in the Unibond League in five years !

I think I am right in saying that the average of our finishing positions since David Moyes took the helm is 9th.That is our current position in the league and one I would be confident of the team at least retaining until the end of the season. You have to understand that this is such an improvement on any five year average in our recent history that Blue Bill and his Board would naturally wish to keep the management team who have achieved this in place. Thus the new improved contracts for Moyes and his first lieutenant, the excellent Alan Irvine.
Last season I was pilloried for daring to say ’Tenth is Good’.Now I am happy to be able to claim ’Ninth is Better’.Long may this steady improvement continue.

Alas Tony...the ’school of Science’ closed its door years ago.as did membership of ’the big five’.
It’s 2007.Rupert Murdoch runs the game and clubs like Chelsea,Noocassell,Villa,Blackburn even bloody West Ham have come up over the horizon and overtaken us or at least are now in the same financial and squad membership ball park.
I and many others don’t see EFC having a divine right to lord it over the rest of the league.
It takes years to get back to the glory days and under Moyes and Kenwright, its patently obvious that the higher reaches of the league are now closer than the lower reaches.
You can’t run before you can walk !

I agree our style of football is not pleasing on the eye. I also think that moyes has maybe taken us as far as he can. Its easy to blame him but if he went who would replace him and with barely any funds what could they hope to achieve. Serious cash needs to be found and then you need a manager you can trust to spend it. at present £11 million for Yakabu is laughable . would you give him another £11 million to blow ???

We can argue for ever;all I know is that Davey is driven with the ambition to establish Everton as PERMANENT fixtures in Europe by the time he is fifty.Blue Bill has bought into his (and our) dream and is showing his faith by securing his future and providing the cash to make it happen. In the meantime,Wizard Wyness will ensure that the books are balanced on a ninth place finish so anything better makes more funds come available.

I don’t know how much they pay local goverment officials these days but it’s far too much if Doddy has time to waste in continuous and repetitive postings on here throughout the day.
It ain’t the Everton press office that’s paying for his time it’s people like me as a Sefton tax payer!

You know i get sick of people calling for Moyes to be sacked. Yes he does have a habit of making some crap decisions as a manager.

BUT. You can’t just blame him. What about the players??? They are ultimately responsible for what happens on the pitch. Does anyone honestly think Moyes tells his players to JUST hoof the ball as most put it. I doubt it.

As for replacing him who with? Any decent manager requires time and more importantly cash to spend. Apart from Arsene Wenger and of course Alex Ferguson there is no other manager present in the premiership that i would want as our gaffer.

Moyes for me has done a good job. He is frustrating as hell but so are the players.

I just hope it all gets better. Soon.

Doddy,so you would be happy with a 9th place finish? What I would like to ask,is how that would be progess from last season? Also there are a lot of fans on here who back Moyes to the hilt,at least they come up with a decent arguement. You my friend, are just a sycophant.

Yes,Anywhere from ninth place upwards will illustrate that we are holding our own in the top half of the most competitive league in the world.Davey has vowed to make steady progress so that by his year 10(2011)Everton are ESTABLISHED in the top five or six. What is required is a little patience and not knee-jerk reaction to the odd defeat.
Everton are set fair to be the Man Unt.of the second decade of this century.Believe me!

I’m prepared to wager a shiny new shilling that Man U will be the Man U of the second decade.
I may have it as a double with EFC still being a shite club with a second rate team playing in a cheapo stadium. But would we have it any other way ?
