We won?

By Stefan Tosev :  01/10/2007 :  Comments (6) :
?and that?s the only positive I can take from the game. I remeber writing a similar response 2 years ago when we beat West Ham 2-0 at home.

I have always liked Moyes; in my eyes he has stabilized us and moved forward, he improved the personnel, lowered the average age of the squad and broke into that ?top 4?. However, I think that he needs to improve and needs to improve big time if we are ever to challenge the existing order.

Yesterday was a shocking display, by every standard. In the first half Boro were all over us. The played better, kept the ball on the deck and if it wasn?t for some really, really poor finishing they could have been 3-0 at the half time.

Between the 15th and 30th minute we never managed to put together 3 passes (count it if you can see the replay). Howard and our defenders were constantly hoofing the ball upfront where Yakubu in his role as target man was very ineffectual; when the second balls dropped occasionally to our central midfielders they promptly gave possession away. As Walter would have said: ?disappointing?!

During that time I understand why Moyes relies so much on the workrate: due to the constant loss of possession our very limited central midfielders are left to be chasing shadows ? hence we need warhorses. There was a big hole in the middle of the park yesterday but I blame neither Phil nor Jag because they are defenders and not central midfielders and it?s not their fault that they are played there.

Was there anything positive? Yes there was ? Arteta and Pienaar; when these two got the ball you could sense that something was going to happen. There were 3-4 occasions when they pulled some magnificent moves and the build-up for our second goal was pure class. No hoof ball, no fighting for scrappy second balls, no fluke ? pure magic.

This leads to the question: Why can?t we do this more often? For me the answer is Moyes. It's obvious that the defenders and Howard are told just to punch aimless balls up front and there is no space for any kind of build-up. I know it's early days but for me Yakubu will be a failure at Everton and it would not be his fault either, he is not the typical target man, he can't win headers as Dunc, he can't guard the ball as well as young Victor. The guy is natural goalscorer but he is lacking service and the way we play suits Victor more than him hence the former looks better whenever he comes on.

Yesterday he had only one clear cut opportunity, which he should have scored but that was it. Only one created opportunity in a home match? Its no coincidence that our leading scorer is Lescott. We are tough to beat, well organized team which scores 70% of the goals from set pieces, nothing more. And when Mikel is injured or has an off game we can't score, simple as that.

Moyes is in his 6th year in charge, I can?t accept anymore the cliché that he is young and learning. Even if we buy Ronaldinho, Henry and Messi they would be failures because of our style, can you imagine any of them chasing endless hoofballs down the channels, or expecting them to challenge strong Premier League defenders in the air? It's brainless.

Boro don?t have better personnel but in the first half they pulled some amazing moves playing fluent football. With organization, team effort and workrate this is the maximum we can achive, if we are to progress we need to change our playing style, otherwise there will be more European embarrassments.

We were not brilliant by any means yesterday, but we got away with it. If we can now start to hold on to the ball a little better, then our forwards will get into the game more ,which in turn will bring attacking midfielders into the game more, therefore creating more chances.
This will hopefully mean that our manager does NOT need to play such a defensively minded pair in the centre of midfield, thus we may get more entertainment.
If not as long as we keep winning who gives a f**k.
No replies from Tony Marsh please.

A nervy preformance, yes. But there was some positives to be taken from the game. We have lacked confidence for a few games espiecally after the Uefa Cup game (which would be 3-1 and we would be sitting pretty). But preformances come with confidence, you want to go on and on about prefomance when we got three points a clean sheet?

No it wasn´t great! No it wasn´t pretty. But it could of been 3-0 to us at the break, and exuse me are you refering to the header Yak had cleared of the line? Or the one he headed over because thats two chances. Yak will score double figures this season and when he does I´ll come back and remind you.

Stefan, totally agree. I’ve said similair in another thread in terms of how we set our stall out. Moyes sets out to avoid defeat and we’re becoming more & more reliant on set pieces to score. What is more worrying is that when we do get ahead we don’t seem to gain confidence and go at teams to finish them off.

Sunday was an embarrasment in the middle of the park, like you say 2 defenders in the centre who couldn’t pass to a blue shirt & didn’t impose themselves on the game at all. Carsley is still clearly our best holding midfielder, Moyes has to put him back in for Thursday otherwise we’ll get swamped just as we did last time away in the UEFA. Ideally we need Carsley with Gravesen in the middle. Jagielka was a big dissappointment on Sunday.

We must change our footballing mentality to move on, we still play as if we are fighting relegation to avoid defeat rather than going out to win, Moyes screaming at players to get rid from the back meaning aimless balls to the front. When we play on the floor we hurt teams and it’s the only way we’ll get the best out the YAK, Johnson & most importantly Vaughan when he’s back. In theory there’s really only the top 4 we should fear.

Stefan - I think you’ve got it spot on.
Gary you say that the Yak will score double figures & then come back to remind everyone.
That’s hardly the boldest of forecasts is it - 10 goals from a £11 million plus striker?

Gary I havent slated any of our players just told it how I have seen it. Two weeks ago when we lost to United I defended D. Moyes his selection, substitutions and tactics.

What bothers me is that I can understand and accept "bridging the gap" sucagainst teams like Arsenal and United but we are playing like that no matter who we play and we have been found wanting in Europe. I was and still am in the pro-Moyes camp but I have the feeling that there is no improvement in our playing style and that we can never bridge that gap if our main playmaker is Howard

Alls I´m saying is that we have played well with skill and flowing passing game this season(Spurs)r and we will do it again I just think people are to judgementle on a few bad preformances,as you know alot of it is to do with confidence, sometimes it takes a a win even when you´ve played an average game.To get back on track.I personally believe this team will get better and better. It will have to with the likes of City and Villa and Pompey coming up .Feed the Yak!
