VIEW FROM THE BLUE
Scandal, Scandal, Read All About It!
"Everton fans banned!" screams a headline from Pink Football.
"Fans under Uefa scrutiny after illicit online ticket buys!" gasps The Guardian.
Even the BBC trotted out the "H" word in a report yesterday: Tickets have been canceled "because of fears over the potential for hooliganism."
What on earth has happened to the field of journalism, new and old media alike, that the need to sensationalise and grab attention with deliberately misleading headlines and reportage is now paramount?
Would it be too much ask for the plain old boring truth to be told? That passionate Evertonians excited by the prospect of watching their heroes on the Continent but frustrated by an excessively small allocation grabbed an opportunity to buy genuine tickets through the official channel of FC Nürnberg's ticket office.
That the German club may have been operating outside of their remit but were at least allocating these extra tickets to sections adjacent to the official away contingent and not recklessly peppering them among the home supporters in order to make a quick buck?
That Uefa intervened through necessity lest a problem arise from excessive numbers of fans and not enough police or a lack of segregation and they, as European football's governing body, would be left to take the blame for allowing it to happen.
That this was down to the clubs involved and the authorities and that the fans are just the victims in all of this.
That unlike the more frequent visitors to the Continent from across Stanley Park, Everton fans have an excellent reputation and behavioural record in European competition. As many have commented on these pages in recent days, just ask the people of Rotterdam, of Villarreal, of Kharkov.
No, its far more juicy to raise the prospect that Uefa classified the game as "high risk" ? that official-speak term is probably the root of all this sensationalism ? because of Everton fans and the obvious risk of hooliganism. Andy Hunter in The Guardian, who really should know better, even hints at unsubstantiated claims that forged tickets were doing the rounds in the pubs around Goodison last Saturday.
And heaven forbid there is any trouble in Nuremberg tomorrow, no matter how innocuous ? let's face it, we're not all saints and things are bound to happen when alcohol is involved. They can all rub their hands with glee and smugly cry, "see, we told you so!" and Everton FC gets branded as a club with troublesome fans and yet more criticism is aimed at the English as a whole.
That's why I'm hoping with all my being that every single Evertonian traveling to Nuremberg is on their best behavior, that they mingle and party with their German hosts in the friendly manner in which they did in Spain and Ukraine, and give a collective "up yours" to the doubters in the media in the process.
This the good name of Everton FC you're dragging through the mud, Mr Writer, and we don't appreciate it.

In terms of the demand for tickets- I agree 100% that the return to competative action to the European frontiers has inspired many of us to make the journey in hope of soaking up some eagerly anticipated glory on the big stage. We are on the cusp of something exciting, and for the first time in years we have something realistic to aspire to-glory in the Uefa cup.
The attitude towards Everton from some journalists never fails to amaze me.
We have the best fans in the league, and it the kind of response shown recently with the ticket fiasco should be something that writers look upon positively, rather than envious sniping about "hooligan elements".
I have no doubt that our fans will do us proud, lets see how many articles are written about the good support after the game huh???
No need to even mention our neighbours mate, excellent otherwise
I’m very proud of our reputation and have no doubt Evertonians will behave, but your right, its in certain peoples interest to blow the most minor inccident into headline news and you do well to point this out, rise above this ticket fiasco boys
I cant get there tonight -absoluely gutted - but I hope Everton make me proud, I know the Evertonians will
"Moyes appeals for calm as ticketless fans heighten fears"
He goes on to say:
"Fewer than half of Everton?s estimated travelling support in Germany have an official ticket for their second Uefa Cup group game, in which victory would maintain a place at the Group A summit, and approximately 1,500 were caught out when home tickets purchased directly from the Bundesliga club were unsurprisingly cancelled on Uefa advice"
Note the use of the word ?unsurprisingly? suggesting that ?Ticketless? Everton fans only have themselves to blame?
"Uefa Cup, Group A

Article continues
European football?s governing body has placed a "high-risk" security classification on the fixture because of the number of ticketless fans in Nürnberg"
They wern?t ticketless before they had them cancelled!!!
I want to know the answer two three questions
1. Who is this Andy Hunter prick?
2. Who does he support?
3. What is his agenda?
It wasn’t ’unsurprising’ that UEFA did what they did. They are wankers, but once alerted to visitors buying tickets not allocated to them they responded in the only way they know how - as wankers.
Could EFC have obtained more ticket? Should Nurnberg have (legally) sold these tickets? Don’t know. I’ll bet you we don’t push any gates down tonight.
COYB - Pienaar and Cahill to score.
He used to wrtie for the Evertonian magazine, plus the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo.
It strikes me a little like a storm in a tea-cup. There was nothing particularly inflammatory about what he wrote. Enjoy the win...997725

EUFA Please take note.
"As for fears of trouble among thousands of ticketless Evertonians, they proved unfounded. Officially there were 2500 travelling fans inside the stadium but double in reality. "I didn?t need to provide a motivational speech," said Moyes. "We only had to see the thousands greeting us on the way to the stadium to know how much Europe means to Everton. We are desperate for success."

Hahahaha.
You could apply that sentence to any article written by Lyndon Loyd, Michael Kenrick et all, over the last 12 months.
