COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY
From my seat: Chelsea (a)
The point was gained through a stubborn well-organised obdurate performance that was highlighted by a superb back five in which both Lescott and Howard excelled. The manager played his part by constantly tinkering and changing personel to not only combat a good Chelsea side but also to keep us as fresh as possible after our games in quick succession.
We also owed a lot to a large chunk of luck as Chelsea dominated possession which at times saw us produce some desperate defending and at other times some very classy defending indeed. Yet by half time it could and should have been 1-1 as both Pienaar and Drogba contrived to miss the ball when in front of unattended gaping goals.
The second half saw us revert to 4-4-2 with Big Vic and Faddy trying to occupy the ball further up field in an attempt to stiffle the flow toward an overworked defence and this worked well until with twenty minutes to go, Drogbha, showing the instinct that makes him much sought after, reacted quickest to a corner and glanced a header home which left me feeling down after such heroic defending.
The manager tinkered again by introducing Tommy Gravesen for the out-of-gas Carsley who had tracked Lampard all over the pitch and still found time to help out in our few forays forward. Cahill was now our main man in centre-mid and he looked like he was running on empty, yet, with ten minutes to go, renewed energy appeared from somewhere and Chelsea not performing their usual shut-up shop routine I thought maybe just maybe, only a goal down and we were coming forward more.
Then it happened, time almost up, Faddy cuts in from the right, works an opening and swings the left foot that means top corner screamer for Scotland but this one was miscued and turned into a far-post cross. Cahill was jumping with Belletti, where the hell he came from I don't know but he put enough pressure on to deny the fullback and as the ball dropped he reacted in world class striker mode and sent a perfectly executed bicycle kick into the net.
Oh the joy and celebration that took place, was there time for a winner us optimistic Blues wondered? Sadly not on this occasion but at the whistle it somehow felt like a win. Who was MotM? Was it Cahill for his non-stop work and goal-of-the-season contender? Was it Lescott for an imperious centreback display against a player regarded as the best? Or Tim Howard for a superb display of the goalkeeping art culminating in a world-class save that denied Lampard? I think I will give it to all three. I also thought Hibbert and Valente put in very good shifts.
Overall I thought that this game like others before it has me believing that, with the addition of a dominant central midfielder who can dictate play with some authority and a strong forceful wideman, we may well be on the way to creating a 'Big Five'.
I say this in light of the Euro games I have watched, yes we have won, but I feel that when we do eventually come up against a seasoned Euro savvy team the midfield could be our undoing. Any good ones going in the Winter window I wonder? Hope so.... UP THE BLUES

One thing’s for sure, Phil Neville ain’t the man! I’m not against him filling in for Cars when unavailable, or slotting into right back. But captain and certain starter??? Still can’t get my head round it - and couldn’t from the moment Moyes made him captain.
Sorry to go a bit negetive. All in all we’re proving ourselves to be a solid, consistent top 7 or 8 team at the mo with a bit of excitement in the cups (for once!).
I too could not contain myself and leapt into the air when Timmy scored the equaliser - to be fair to the Chelsea supporters around me they were mainly good natured.
Luckily enuf, managed to get tikets in the everton end went fucking mental.
Also for any of you who don?t know, go onto www.live-footy.org if you cant get the match, shows most prem games for free, ive watched the brummie game as well as several others this season.
Where have you been? Poor old Lue was waiking around Buckley (which I’m assuming is not your real moniker?) looking for you!
AND they didn’t give up when there was 2 minutes to go and they were losing at The Bridge.
Your article once again goes to show that the only scousers who talk sense about football support Everton
We were much better than the mainstream media would have it and, at the end, we were the team going for the win.
That was a really strong willed performance from a team of real men who dug deep into their reserves of guts and energy. They must have been knackered at the end!
I have slated Moyes a lot but credit where it’s due and he showed the spirit in making changes and trying to get something from the game.
A good left winger (McSheffrey) , a big defensive midfielder and a playmaker(why not Arteta in the middle?) in January and watch us go!
Glad you’re back with us and thanks for the great report, it’s the next best thing to being there.
I too am having problems with computers - I have just today noticed a strange transaction on my credit card. I seem to have purchased a subscription to, wait for it, West Ham United TV, It all seems legit but of course it isnt for obvious reasons!
How weird is that?
I’ve heard of spanners in the works but never Hammers in the works.
Ken, next time you go incommunicado will you light a beacon on The Common and I’ll spread the word.
And no, before anyone says it, I?m not having a senior moment. It?s just way past my bedtime.
Where I feel he’s really progressed is in his tactics. Against Nurnberg he’d clearly sent his team out to contain the opposition without working too hard, in truth I thought we were heading for a draw but we somehow raised the tempo in the closing stages to seal a fine win. More importantly we employed similar tactics against Chelsea and secured a valuable point with a late surge although its fair to say we had to work very hard to do so.
Moyes made some quite bold statements prior to the game stating he was going there with the intention of getting a result I have too say I didn’t share his optimism I felt given the midweek game we simply wouldn’t compete. He’d thought this one out I think and was confident his team still had something in reserve and indeed his confidence was rewarded. Cause for optimism I think.
see you all tomorrow
