COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From my seat: West Ham (a)

By Ken Buckley :  16/12/2007 :  Comments (13) :
Yet another capital win, another three points, in the top six and safe by Christmas. So far so good!

The game started much the same as Wednesday with the Blues quick out of the blocks and on the offensive without creating anything from good approach play. Then Solano, Parker and Mullins got midfield control and but for a Ljungberg glaring miss by directing the ball into Howard's body instead of the net and Ashton lobbing wide instead of over the keeper, we may well have found ourselves two down.

The Hammers had the better of the first half ? that is until the cusp of half time. The Blues got the ball on the deck and built up an excellent passing move into their box only to see it break down. From the clearance the industrius Carsley picked up the ball and started another passage of pass and move which eventually saw Osman dispossess Pienaar, such was the desire, and he found Arteta on the left, his excellent far-post cross picked out the lurking Cahill who headed back across goal to the Yak with no defender within a yard of him (how does he do that?) and he headed over the outrushing Green's hands and into the net. Pandamodium from the Blue end, silence from the rest of the ground.

The second period again started with us on top but soon became an even contest with the Blues determined to hold what they had gained and break when they could. This almost paid off toward the 70-min mark when the Hammers centreback Collins dozed off and allowed Osman a clear run on Green but the usually cool finisher got too much height and chipped both keeper and bar.

The Hammers used all their subs but to no avail, Moysie kept his powder dry until the last knockings when the 11-goal Yak was afforded a standing ovation as he was replaced by AJ.

The Blues defending now was hoof it to relieve pressure and AJ to occupy them long enough to be ready to repel the next long ball into our box. This tactic paid dividends when Neville launched another relieving ball out of defence right onto the head of Purse who inexplicably cushioned a sideward header into the path of AJ, who ? seeing the keeper in no-man's land ? ran on and clipped the ball over him and into the net at our end which sparked wild scenes by both player and fans, so much so that it was spoiled by gestapo scrooge-like stewards and a yellow card. No-one cared... WE HAD WON.

Overall, though not at our best, when we did get the ball down and play we looked the team with the quality. Today saw Jags more at home with his role and surroundings and bodes well for his future. As a measure of how well we are doing, Arteta looked part of the team rather than our sole creative outlet of the past.

Pienaar gets better and better and his workrate is phenominal. I would love to know how much ground he covers in a game. My man of the match would be Lescott closely followed by Yobo ? those two were the rock that said to the others "we will keep em out; you go and play." The Hammers blew their bubbles... we burst them.

The players threw their shirts to a lucky few at the end. Can they give us all the ultimate Christmas present on the 23rd? We can then have a right family knees-up on Boxing day. Here's hoping. UP THE BLUES!!!

Thanks Ken,

Another solid performance from a great team display; is there two better defenders in the league right now than Lescott / Yobo? I don’t think so.

I have said it before but I think the main difference in our set up this season is Pienaar; his vision, distribution and link up play has been superb.

Too hung over to even write!

Upson headed the ball into AJ’s path.

We need to secure Pienaar this January. I think it shouldn?t cost us more than 3m.

If we offload Mcfadden and ADVM together, we can make more than 3m, more than enough to cover Pienaar.

I think offloading Hibbert too can make us the 3m to secure Pieenar.

Plus we are getting Vogel for free and possibly Downing on loan from Boro. Vogel is not cup tied.

So it will be a good January, as I forsee it

The fee is 2.5m for Pienaar that has already been reported when the loan deal began.
Why pay now we have first refusal and Dortmund have to sell to us at the price agreed in the Summer.
McFadden would fetch 5m because Rangers, Celtic and Brum will bid and we can get a better price. In the paper today he is supposed to be getting a new contract offered to him.
VDM will go for nothing to get his wages off the books no one would buy him.
Hibbert is needed as a squad player till the end of the season at least, we are in 4 competitions and going to have 3 Africans missing plus we have 2
injury prone left backs.
Downing on loan is very optimistic Boro will want plenty of cash for him as he is their major asset.

Agree ?bout not buying Pineaar ?till summer but think we should definitely secure him then.
Think we should keep McFadden as he is a great impact sub (very likely to get a goal). Also think that while he seems unused now, he will be needed later on in the season when injuries hit.
Think that we won?t get too much better backup right backs than Hibbert. Who else are we going to get??
On the subject of right backs, delighted to see Neville is staying at right back as he is NOT a midfielder. Haven?t lost since we switched him there.

Yes ! San Mikel as one of our quality midfield players. Not the only one. Now that’s progress. Anyone saying Arteta isn’t looking so good has to realise that this is a very good sign.

I can remember we came away from games in 69 saying , for example, Ball had a good game today. Next game it would be Harvey .... and so on. They had all had good games, but someone is always going to stand out.

And again, talking about the current squad in the same breath as that lot - that really is progress.

Reading on the sky sports website that Lassana Diarra wants to leave Arsenal in January due to lack of first team opportunities. Think he is a good young player (22) fully established in France first team can play right back and defensive midfield and would be a good signing for around 3 million.?????
Fantastic to be same points as RS after all the money they spent in the summer, lets hope we finish above them this season!!!!!!

Yes John!

And if we do it will be Champions League again, but this time with the squad and likelihood of being there long term.

Aside from possibly Gerrard (awful today) who would you want from them except Reina for the bench? Torres? He should have played today.

Sorry I’ve just been told he did. And I thought I watched the game.

By the way, what a failure from Manure.

Any self-respecting championship contender would beat RS by three goals and leave us ahead of them in the Prem.

Oh well, it won’t be a long wait.

I think we should get the Pienaar deal done , I dont want him going to the African Cup Of Nations and having his head turned by players from so called bigger clubs, we’ve been stung like that before, get him signed now

Don’t think that will happen to Pienaar, Dave! If he does go he’ll be with the South African squad and who is going to turn his head? I hardly see a move to Blackburn or Mamelodi Sundowns as a forward move for him. If he is mingling with players from other squads then he’ll have Yobo and Yak to keep him company! Besides which he has come out to say that he is enjoying his time at Everton and would be keen on a permanent move. And finally, who would come in for him? I can’t see ManU, Chelsea, Arse or RS being interested!

I agree Ed. There isn’t really anybody in the SA squad that could boast of being in a better team than ours, so I’m not too bothered by that. However, he’s bound to say he loves it at Everton (and I’m sure he does) but that doesn’t mean someone couldn’t change his mind.

I would like to see him signed as soon as possible, but if Moyes has said he won’t until summer then so be it, he’s the boss. Just remember though, it’s not all about Dortmund and what they have agreed in the loan deal. If Pienaar turns round and says he doesn’t want to sign (for whatever reason) then we don’t get him. James Elsworthy, you make it sound like he has no choice.

Great result, great run, great time to be a blue!!

I do not seem to imply anything the choice is Pienaars at the end of the day, the deal between us and Dortmund only is agreed
