COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY
From my seat: Man City (h)
In a game that saw us (short of five key players) gain the points from Sven's first pick (with the possible exception of the young Johnson) says something for the progress being made.
In a first half that saw us more than shade it, we carved out more chances and should have capitalised on 20 minutes when Cahill's shot was well parried by the keeper but only into his path again but alas he fired over when it seemed easier to score from six yards.
We continued to have the better of it and on the half hour mark we earned a corner which was cleared but the ball was fed back to Arteta who drove in a cross approaching 90 miles an hour that saw Lescott, who had stayed up, move striker-like to the near post and guide a side footer into the net. After Tuesday, that certainly helped to take a load off his shoulders.
The rest of the half saw what chances there were come to the Blues but none threatened and we led the non-fireing fourth placed team at the break.
During the break it was a toss up whether the guy hitting the bar and winning a car or the H/T score from the Riverside got the loudest cheer.
Second half and City, obviously fired by Sven's quiet genious, pegged us back for quite a while without ever really threatening. Sven was forced into makeing a tactical double substitution just 10 minutes in, which always seems to me to indicate that the opposing manager has most to fear. However it did up the pressure on our defence and we were finding it hard to get out and mount anything. It was enough pressure to concern our manager, who replaced the out of sorts McFadden with Vaughan five minutes later. (Did he have an injury?)
The two young men put themselves about without ever looking the real deal but did enough to take some of the pressure off our defence.
On the 70 minute mark, Sven threw on his last sub in an attempt to salvage something but on this day we were not to be denied ? apart from a smart grasscutter from Petrov in the second minute of injury time, which was well dealt with by Howard smothering the ball with no hint of a rebound ? so the half ended and all assembled Blues saluted a well earned three points.
Overall I thought the key to this victory was the taking of a chance in a game devoid of chances, aided and abetted by by both Hibbert and Cahill nullifying City's main outlets, namely Elano and Petrov. Neither of these much vaunted players will have enjoyed their encounter with those two Blue boys.
In looking for a Man of the Match, I am tempted to offer Hibbert but on reflection I thought this game, mainly due to the missing five, was more of a collective contribution and all thirteen who took the field played their part.
I enjoyed the game as a well-fought contest between two sides intent on either Champions League or Uefa Cup placings yet I could not help musing that both sides are still a little way short of matching those top three. We are getting there and this encounter brought into focus the manager's need for his second five-year plan, unless an unexpected big cash injection that finds favour with the Board materialises.
But I am enjoying it and I hope Danny from Ireland had a cracking day out after his 54-year break. UP THE BLUES!!!

Keep the reports coming. COYB!
With the players you had out you were more than happy to let us have possession but as soon as we got into the final third we came unstuck through a mixture of good defending and a lack of presence up front from ourselves.
A good win for you guys though and sets the return up well in a few weeks time.

This lads been put through the ringer by so many Evertonians ? me included ? this season, but his brilliant tackling and Blocks stopped the supply line to the City strikers all afternoon, lets give credit where its due, Hibbo was outstanding yesterday
great article ken. have you ever thought of taking up journalism profesionally.
I too have to praise Hibbo for yesterday?s performance, Petrov was the one player I was very wary of but happily he was given nothing. I?ll bet he won?t be looking forward to their next encounter.
I?d also like to give a mention to Joleon, he is a legend in the making. If you could take the best attributes of Dave Watson, Ratters and Degsy mountfield and put them in one player then that's where he?s heading . A bit over the top ???? We?ll see.....
One shot on goal by City and that was late on.
Well defended, well taken goal. Great 3 points.
This is one of the most intelligent, sensible and well-written articles I have ever read on a fan or blogsite.
It's a complete contrast with the shit Chelsea published on their site.
Good Luck to City for the rest of the season
However, I feel that there is an underlying defensive weakness and that is the reluctance of Howard to dominate his 6-yard box, nevermind the 18-yard box. Although he is a terrific shot-stopper, you can see the defenders look to one another (and Howard) in the danger areas. Surely, this should be ironed out on the training pitch. Before the games, he looks wholly confident in the warm up; unfortunately in the game he tends to stay on the line and we paid the price in both the Chelsea and Arsenal games.
2. Lescott finishing with the coolness of Muller (how good can big Jo get?)
3. If our 'away' support can be so good, how come it's so quiet at Goodison until summat happens? Why don't the 'away' lads sit together an get it going? Surely a singing section would improve things? Or has the influx of women (who dont sing) made people more 'conscious'?
4. Why do they always run out of pies? an why arent the Changs lined up for fans ready for half-time?
5. Why cant Hibbo play like that every week?
6. Is McFadden playing for a move? If he is, shouldnt he try actually 'running' a little bit?
7. How good is Vaughany gonna be? (when he can last a full match, i think we've got a cracker there)
8. 38 thousand? are Everton up to some 'massaging' of the figures?
9. Do Man City still think they are in the 2nd division? Whats the balloons and chants of 'shall we sing for you' about? Beauts.
10. I thought Halsey was supposed to be one of the 'better' referee's? Not on that showing he wasn't, or maybe the ref's have been 'told' to be more lenient recently?

Interesting, what do you all think about the "race for fourth". Of the 4 it would seemingly be hardest for us because of the extra games. Villa and City don't have Europe on the menu, while Liverpool do but have a massive squad and a crucial game in hand.
Maybe its too early to talk, maybe we should just keep ticking over and stay in touch.
Can't wait for Wednesday now though!!
