COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From My Seat: Spurs (H)

One point only from a game that perhaps should have been won by the Blues in the first half.

Six players short against a rejuvinated Spurs under the tutilege of Ramos saw us have most of the game which underlines our right to be fourth.

In a first half dominated by the Blues saw us produce some excellent moves which should have led to goals but for that lack of compsure in the vital area. AJ,Baines and Big Vic had chances but just didnt have either the class or was it the luck to convert.

Ten minutes from the break and what looked like a trip on AJ by Huddleston went unpunished by both ref and linesman much to the disgust of those assembled.

This got the crowd going and although wave after wave of attacks were produced no end product was forthcoming.

In that first half all that Spurs could muster was an overhead kick from Malbranque to trouble us.

The second half started well with a mesmeric run from Arteta but his final shot was wide of the far post.

Some ten minutes later a superb pass from Manny split the Spurs defence and found AJ in space but his shot was trapped somewhere between the keepers body and the turf when really the net should have bulged.

From then on a nil-nil looked nailed on and so it proved although in the last fifteen minutes Spurs came into the game much more and produced some threatening situations but in truth they owed a lot to a tiring Blues outfit and sloppiness from both Neville and Fernandes.

Final whistle and the big screen showed us that results elsewhere had been kind to us.

Overall I thought that under the circumstances we had done quite well but again it showed that the excellent progress that has been made depends so much on having our first picks fit and available to turn games such as this from draws to wins.

In an entertaining game when the class acts on both sides were defenders leaves me believing that despite the raw talent of Big Vic and Vaughany that missing magic ingredient talked about must be the box preditor.

My man of the match was Lescott closely followed by Jags and Nuno which at home is really the wrong end of the pitch for such accolades.

Still we remain fourth and as Mr Moyes says if we can keep hanging about until ACN players are back and all injury problems subside then a decent league position can be attained and who knows going to City twice might just come true.

I still worry though that we are light in midfield and lack that all important wideman that could give this season such a boost.

But the window is about to close so I reckon it's we go with what we have got and may they deliver.
Ewood next and no easy trip, lets just hope we can dig another one out.

UP THE BLUES

Great report (again), thanks Ken. I see SA (so Pienaar) have been knocked out of AFCoN, hopefully Steven is on a first class flight straight away. I see he was on the bench for their game tonight and his ankle was only a knock so he may be on the bench, at least, for us at Ewood if all goes well. His return (and hopefully Ossie too) will boost us no end. 3 more points on Saturday here we come. COYB!

Results from other games have been very kind to us recently Ken. Portsmouth now look in serious danger of fading away at the moment and City?s season also looks like it might fizzle out. Liverpool have so much going on off the pitch that they can?t seem to focus.

Still, with fourteen game still left to play in the league , and things so close with the teams just below us, it could still be a hell of a scrap.

I am surprised with the lack of comments about the state of the Goodison pitch which I am convinced influenced the game. Every ball seemed to bounce very high and take an eternity to come down. Watching the game from the comforts of my room it was hard to work out how cold it was but I thought the undersoil heating would have taken care of that. The pitch looked very uneven with quite a lot of bare spots. All the players on both sides who thrive on a good surface looked very ordinary....Arteta, Fernandes, Berbatov and Lennon for example

In contrast when I watched the WHU v Red Shite game the pitch looked immaculate. Given that the current Everton team relies on slick passing and instant control would it not be in the team’s best interest to use some of the money they didn’t spend and relay the pitch so we can continue to beat teams with passing and movement rather than resorting to hoofball. As soon as other teams see the state of the current pitch I am sure they will quickly work out that trying to play football is not an option and resort to them by passing midfield and closing down our players who try to control the ball as quickly as possible.

spot on ken. i was a bit worried before the game that lennon would take valente to the cleaners. but, thankfully, nuno had a geat game. jagielka saved us with a fantastic block and also pushing berbatov wide in the last few minutes. lescott was the coolest player on the pitch. i hope he gets the captaincy one day. he leads by example. i was made up with the crowd in the final twenty minutes, they came to life in a big way. but then i have to say i was really dissappointed when the whistle went that they never gave the players more applause ! that was the kind of game that we would have lost in more recent times. as it turns out that was a valuable point.

Good report Ken.
Just wanted to mention Carsley seems to be out of form in recent weeks. in the Chelsea game he was well down on form and had to be dragged. And he has followed up with a similar performance against Spurs. Bad passing and poor touch. I am one of his biggest fans but i have to admitt his form in recent weeks is worrying to say the least.
The players are not machines so it’s only natural they may dip in form from time to time and i think the torrid and hectic period December and January may be taking it’s toll on a couple of players.

Wasn’t hugely impressed with the overall contribution of Manny. Worked well, is good on the ball and can’t be faulted, but passes back or sideways too often. Still a good way to go before he is up to the contribution level of Ossie and Stevie P
