Solving the riddle in the middle

By Kevin Sparke :  03/02/2008 :  Comments (19) :
Back in the uncertain days of the pre-season, when it looked as if we might have blown our chance of a genuine assault upon the upper reaches of the Premier League by not signing any class in midfield, I felt the re-signing of Gravesen was a retrograde step and a move born out of desperation. All due respects to the service Tommy has given the club in his first mercurial spell but, on the fleeting glimpses we?ve seen so far, he looks nowhere near good enough to enter the manager?s consideration as anything other than cover on the bench or a last throw of the dice if all other options are exhausted. We had a gaping hole in our attacking options left by the failure to sign some genuine creative class in the centre of the park ? a director of pace, a ball winner and a chance maker.

Cahill, despite his goals, is not the player to make the team buzz or tick like a well-oiled clock; Arteta reminds me of a girl I used to go out with ? beautiful, creative, but moody and fragile; and Pienaar will only ever be effective wide? although how he shines in that role; Osman on his day is flair personified but he lacks strength and the eye for a killer pass; ?Harry Hill? is a disrupter and a grinder but not an attacking force. We lacked that playmaker; a contemporary Peter Reid or Colin Harvey. All good teams have players who excel in this role ? I grew convinced that, whilst we lacked this player, we?d never rise above ?top-half-of-the-table battler? status.

As the season progressed, I felt my fears were confirmed as all too often we seemed to by-pass midfield in favour of ?route one? football and in Europe we won despite teams negating or overrunning our efforts in midfield ? and then something really strange but very welcome happened. At about mid-October time, after the ?Goodison Derby points heist?, it didn?t seem to matter that we lacked a genuine engine room with class in the centre as other players stood up to be counted and through their efforts we became a team who could play the ball around a bit ? only in spells at this stage, but very welcome spells they were, but to me it was still a matter of urgency that we signed this missing link of class in the middle.

Well, ladies and gents ? I believe Moyes has found our midfield maestro in Manuel Fernandes. He is still very young, he is still very rough around the edges. Nevertheless, looking at the evidence of his performance yesterday and taking into account his rustiness, I believe that in the long run he will proove to be the difference in our race for fourth place and if we sign him on a permanent contract and can tie Lescott in a long term contract ? next season I see no reason why we can?t hope for greater things than Champions League qualification.

When the Nigerian contingent return and Moyes has a proven goalscorer back in the ranks and combining this with our newly balanced midfield, if Moyes has successfully solved the riddle in the middle with his acquisition of Fernandes, then I?d say "Watch out Premier League because Everton are going to be one hell of a team to face?."

We will finish fourth this season? at least we should do barring controversy.

I like Fernandes- he’s the sort of player I want to see at Everton. He has ability and is a great passer. He does need to do more when we don’t have the ball though. At Blackburn yesterday, they had a throw in on their right wing. Someone came to receive the ball short and despite Baines pointing and shouting at Fernandes to pick him up, he couldn’t be bothered until he had received it, by which point it was too late to stop the cross. Arteta has an abundance of ability, but he grafts as well. Fernandes will have to be willing to adopt a similar attitude if he wants to stay because Moyes will not persist in playing a lazy player.

Midfield of Arteta, Pienaar, Fernandez plus an eoforcer, a proper number 10 with Yak or Johnson upfront, defence pretty much as it is - now that would be a strong side.

Yeah, as silky as Manny undoubtedly is, I think we have to wait and see. If Moyesie gets him grafting like he has gotten pretty much everybody else to do then we might have a top-class player on our hands.
He was poor yesterday. Made three or four bad passes, didn?t work hard enough to win the ball back, etc...I think there is evidence to suggest that Fernandes is not the most self-motivating of players. Which is why we have our great manager.
I think, erm, HOPE he comes good because that midfield killer is just about all we lack at the moment. That...and a top class keeper, heh, heh.

Like all successful teams, like our 80s side, as Arsenal, Man Utd, everyone works their socks off for 90minutes. I've not seen that from Manny. Great vision, no engine. But if he had an engine, would he be with us now?

Colin Malone, again you bring this "no engine" up. He isn’t fit as he wasn’t fit last season when he joined us. Can you expect him to be at the same level fitness wise as the majority of our team when he’s only made 12 appearances in 6 months and alot of those coming from the bench.

In terms of work rate I wouldn’t say he was a hard worker but that can easily be drilled into him if we get him on a permanent deal. Arteta was exactly the same when he first came. He didn’t work any where near as hard as he does now. Moyes got hold of him and he now works his socks off and puts a shift in for the team.

Fernandes is very laid back on the pitch but this doesn’t mean he doesn’t care or isn’t trying its just the way he conducts himself. Yakubu is exactly the same and so is Victor Anichebe.

"Like all successful teams, like our 80,s side, as Arsenal, Man. utd, everyone works their socks off for 90minutes."

I beg the differ. Thierry Henry wasn’t a hard worker and neither is Ronaldo of Man utd yet they still played in very successful sides. Ronaldinho is one of the laziest players I’ve ever seen and had a far worse Engine than Fernandes yet he was there best player the season they won the Spanish League aswell as the Champions League. Jan Molby of the successful Liverpool side was also a very lazy player with "no engine".

I personally would rather see genuine class than headless hard working chickens. I’d rather have Yakubu over Johnson as whilst he doesn’t run round like a mad man he does show his quality on the pitch and best of all he puts the ball in the back of the net.

Manny is not upto speed yet: Remember, he hasn’t played for the majority of the season. I hope he’ll find his boots against Reading on Saturday at Goodison.

I also think Fernandes is the business. As many of the posters above have noted he isn’t at peak fitness just yet and he is still adjusting to the pace of the premier league. Give it a couple of more weeks and he will be directing traffic in the centre of the pitch.

One of the things I really like about this player is that he seems to put in a huge "first stride" and can cover a lot of ground quickly.

I think the biggest problem for DM is going to be who he leaves on the bench. My midfield - Fernandes, Arteta, Piennar and Osman.

Interesting thread !

I agree that Manny & Pienaar have been excellent additions to the squad this year. However, we remain painfully thin to cover for injuries & supsensions.

After Arteta, Pienaar, Manny, Osman, Carsley, who exactly do we have to play mid-field ? (I put Cahill up with Yak, AJ, Vaughny & Vic as one of our 2 goal poachers, so I don’t consider him as a "mid-fielder" - of course, many will disagree).

We have 5 players vying for 4 places. Just not enough competition in my opinion. We need at least 2 more quality mid-fielders in the coming summer transfer. A wide player and a "mid-field enforcer/general’ as a replacement to Cars.

Perhaps I’m old fashioned but I’d like to see some ’muscle’ in the midfield-the sort that Graveson used to provide in days of yore.Suspect Moyes will now go 4-4-2 with Yacubu’s return and his new ’love-in’ with Johnson’s work-rate.If that fails then there’s always his love-child Phil Neville to fill the gap!

Please give me Manny any time over the midfield duo of Carsley and Neville. The guy may not be match fit yet, but he has one quality that makes him a must in my book, he always wants the ball and he tends not to give it away (lets not forget the quality he showed the back of last season). Brian we have had plenty of muscle in midfield over the past 10-15 years and for much of that everton midfielders have treated the ball with the same affection superman regards kryptonite with. I am pleased to see us try and play ’pretty’ football with novel concepts such as passing to feet, moving off the ball into space as opposed to hammering the ball into the stratosphere, long may it continue!

I would like to see a 4 4 2 with AJ Yak up front. Carsley Manny in the middle and Pienaar and Arteta on the flanks. The only problem is that leaves no room for cahill!

Cahill is blatently nackered at the moment and his choice to do the round trip to Melbourne for a qualifier will only make it worse. I think we should use this to give the 442 option a go as Paul Lenehan says, bring on Tiny Tim for the last 20 to mix it up a bit!

One name not mentioned is Gardener, where will he fit into this jigsaw?

Matt, I dont think Gardner will get a game to be honest unless we have some serious injury problems at the back. Good thing about him is he’s always there and he can cover both centre half and left back.

I doubt Cahill will even be involved against Reading. I dont think it is down to his tiredness why he hasn’t been playing well. He just doesn’t look as good alongside AJ. When Yakubu is back and around the team I expect him to hit to form again.

I expect is to go 4-4-2 against Reading and to be honest I wouldn’t mind that at all. Something a bit different and its not like we actually need 5 in midfield against reading. I think this is what we’ll go for:

Howard

Neville Jagielka Lescott Baines

Arteta Fernandes Carsley Osman

Yakubu Johnson

Nice to see Jags finally starting to find his feet after a few nervy starts. He is certainly starting to look a lot more comfortable.

As for the team, who’d be the manager?
Every place seems to have good competition, and what a great problem to have. If they’re all fit:- I favour the 5-5-2 formation

Howard

Hibbert, Neville, Yobo, Lescott, Baines
Arteta, Cahill, Osman, Pienarr, Fernandes
Yak Attack, Johnson

Oh, hang on, still no Jags or Carsley!
Do you think the ref would notice if we slipped them on? Probably not if last weeks offside against Johnson is anything to go by.

Robbed!!

The perfect player to fill the midfield boss role we desperately need was
recently bought for 5 million by Harry Rednapp.

Diarras availabilty seems to have gone totally unoticed by David Moyes.

He was the man of the match in his first
game for Portsmouth

I’ve not seen enough of Diarra to comment too much on his ability Steve, but would you have accepted him coming in and, on his unveiling, commenting that Everton are a stepping stone and that the club understands this? I certainly wouldn’t, and his attitude in general seems to stink - ’play me or I’m off’ seems to sum it up.

As for Saturday, I think the Jags-Lescott partnership is working too well to break up, and Joey could probably do with a bit of a rest. Agree that Cahill needs a break too - I’d go 4-4-2 :
Howard
Hibbert - Jags- Lescott - Baines
Arteta-Manny-Cars-Ossie
AJ-Yak

Manny as our playmaker? I think it will take him until the end of the season to fit in and get his fitness back, but whether we actually sign him is another issue. What of the third party ownership? Was that resolved? Could we afford the hefty price Valencia would ask and would Moyes open his purse strings?

I can see the potential, yes, but will he be an Everton player come August? We all want him to be, that’s for sure.

Steve Alderson, I’ve seen Diarra & he looked brilliant in that game for Pompey aginst Chelsea but what I think (only opinion) DM had done was weight up the wages (rumoured to be £60k+) and his attitude, which is mentioned earlier. He obviously has an opinion of himself & we all know Moyes places a very high emphasis on team spirit & morale. He probably believes that Diarra would upset this & not fit in.
Also as an evertonian I wouldnt like to hear the comments he made about ’pompey being stepping stone to one of europes elite playing champs league football’

Would you?

I think Fernandes has more potential as a long term replacement for Lee Carsley. He plays deep like a Viera and is able to pick a pass.

He also makes the occasional marauding run. What we really need is a winger. The rest should be replaced like for like cause our midfield when we play five has a really good balance.
