COLUMNIST KEN BUCKLEY

From My Seat: Sunderland (A)

By Ken Buckley :  10/03/2008 :  Comments (24) :

Another three points and another clean sheet from a game that was won by one passage of quality play and one world class save.

The first half started almost where we left off in Italy with a few passes being made and then the ball given away and with Sunderland flooding the mid-field it wasnt the greatest spectacle.
If Everton moved forward it broke down on a resolute Sunderland defence and if they broke forward we mopped up.

The half moved on in this somewhat boring, untidy fashion which gave me time to wonder why only Pienaar and the Yak were wearing gloves.

Then just before half-time we upped the excitement when a good cross in saw Cahill hit a post.
The second half started with us looking more lively and being that bit more creative without really threatening.

Then just before the hour mark our best passage of play in the match saw the ball worked first to the right flank then back to the centre back again to the right then a switch to the left Pienaar found Arteta who put in a wicked curling cross toward goal Cahill and AJ went for it and the ball nestled in the back of the net.It was AJ who wheeled away to take the applause from those Blues assembled behind the goal.

We had something to hold on to,the game meandered on not really entertaining nor really boring but definately tense.

Both back fours made customery blocks and last ditch tackles yet neither keeper was unduly troubled.

Sunderland threw all their subs on but the difference wasn't noticible except to note that Andy Reid looked as wide as he was tall which to say the least is unusual in these days of athletic footballers.
The Sunderland fans had brought the old 'Roker Roar' to the Stadium of Light and urged their favourites forward to gain an equaliser but never looked capable against a defence intent in holding what they had.

Bardsley took Pienaar off at the knees with the worst tackle of the game but thankfully after treatment he resumed.

The manager with no doubt an eye on Wednesday soon subbed Pienaar and brought on Baines.
With a few minutes to go the manager made two more subs ,the regulation Big Vic for the Yak but the second one surprised me when 16yr old Jack Rodwell was given his Prem. debut in place of Cahill who had again put in a very energetic shift.

With Sunderland pressing and desperate for an equaliser I expected the more experienced Graveson but it was good to see the young man get a taste and the big boost in knowing what faith the manager has in him.

The board went up showing four minutes to see out and that seemed routine untill Big Vic gave away a needless freekick some twenty yards out.

Andy Reid took it and no matter his shape he rifled it toward the top corner with venom, many a Blue gulped until the green-sleeved arm of the acrobatic Howard tipped it over. What a save.
From the resultant corner another melee ended with the ball in the keepers grasp.
Final whistle and much jubilation from both players and fans.

Overall I considered this a very good win taking into consideration the gross out in Italy, the travelling and facing a team desperate for points and a very good home record of late.

I thought we missed Carsley and found it difficult to pick out a man of the match in such an untidy scrappy game,at various times in the game Yobo,Jags,Lescott and Hibbert were well worthy of mention but the accolade should be shared by AJ and Howard as goal and save ultimately were the difference.

With things tight at both top and bottom of the league I wont be to surprised to see a few more of this type of game in the coming weeks.

Total change of scene come Wednesday night, may everyone be fit and composed.
It is possible, isn't it!!
UP THE BLUES

Spot on Ken.

Yes, it is possible on Wednesday but only if we play like we did in the first half against Arsenal in December, for the whole match.

This team deserves a UEFA Cup Win and top 4 finish this season. COYB!

I think yesterdays game showed just what an important role Carsley has played in our success. We were guilty of squandering possession a little too often again but thankfully it managed to go unpunished.
As I’m sure the pundits will bill it, we have ’a mountain to climb’ on Wednesday, and I personally think it will prove to be beyond us. Its certainly possible that we could turn it around, but having watched yesterdays game I just can see it.
Nonetheless, I shall be sat in front of the telly at some ungodly hour EARLY Thursday mornin here hopin for the best and then goin to work cream crackered. It’ll all be worth it if I arrive with a big grin on me face.

I know Rodwell only played a few minutes, but did he he get many touches and how did he look. Can anyone actually tell me how good he is. I live in Aus and therefore don?t get all the media hype. Hope he is the new but better version of Carsley. If he can pass that would be great.

I struggle to see what all the fuss is about Carsley ? in what way did we miss him? We got a clean sheet and lets face it all he does is add protection to the back four. He has got no vision, no range of passing, and can't run.

One thing no-one has mentioned so far really is that for ONCE we did actually benefit from a spot of good fortune.
Whilst there’s obviously absolutely no way it was intentional, the goal did go in off AJ’s elbow and could easily have been disallowed.
Could this herald a change in our luck and, dare I whisper it, even maybe provide us a penalty kick before the season ends?

I agree with Tony. Against Fiorentina, Carsely was awful, probably our worst player (though he’s obviously been very good in a lot of games).

I also agree with Chris that it was nice to get a bit of luck. How many lucky goals have Liverprool got lately? Boro, Bolton and Newcastle, they are soo lucky!! Bastards.

Did we miss Cars? We sure did. He doesn?t give the ball away as much as Phil Neville does. Notice the passes in midfield was poor. More often then not, the choice was to either pump it up, by passing the midfield, or short unnecessary passing with each other, and allowing Sunderland to regroup.

Cahill and Neville really struggled to gel, and we desperately couldn?t link defence and midfield together. I think cars would have provided not only a more robust cover for the back, but greater linkage between the back 4, and the midfield.

So we have shifted from slagging off Cahill to Carsley now!

FFS, why do posters feel the need to try and point fingers or bring down players...even after a win.

Cars has been fantastic for us all season, as he was last season, it is just that we don’t have a good enough midfield around him to make up for his poor passing.

He is among the best at what he does and to try and detract from that is just senseless.

Carsley the worst player in Italy? I think only him and Howard were the only two to come out with any credit! How can any fan slag him off, he's in the running for the Player of the Year to be fair. All Evertonians have to have something or someone to moan at!! Sort it out and support your team FFS! COYB

Result was all. I don?t care if it wasn?t elegant or we had a a touch of luck with the goal - we were due some. Hope that tackle hasn?t crocked Pienaar too seriously, lucky not to have had his leg broken. Good to hear Arteta is pain free and hope he inspires a come back against Fiorentina. Agree about laying of players esp Cars whose put in some good shifts. We?re still moving in the right direction and giving the shite a run for their multi-millions.

Paul yes we do but only 5th as the Carling Cup winners (Spurs) and the FA cup winners (Pompey probably) get the other spots.

I believe we are out of the Uefa Cup (barring miracles) but could manage 4th which will be even better financialy as you don't make much in Uefa Cup compared to the Champions League.

I wish those fickle supporters would not come on here critising Lee Carsley, a proven international in a successful National side, who has never hidden and is apparently loved in the dressing room (No jokes please).
Yes he may be getting on but there is nobody better in our squad or outside of the top 4 at doing the job he does. Fernandes may POTENTIALLY be a better all rounder but is still to prove himself second time around. In the meantime let's stop bashing the players and get behind them for the run in and then see what the summer brings.

Pretty much sums up the game hardly eventful but 3 very welcome points against difficult opposition and coming off the back of a poor European result it has to be a positive. Have to agree regarding Carsley. It was perhaps a blessing in disguise that he did not feature in the game as he’s not getting any younger we desperately need him to be rested and fully fit for Wednesday’s game as I think he could be pivot able to the outcome as we dare not concede. Invariably he wins the critical challenges and keeps it simple with his passing however, I do fear for us if Neville is chosen to partner him in the middle as he tends to hinder rather than help and he certainly does not engender confidence in the teams passing ability if he’s not attempting to pass the ball back he’s urging others to do so. Not exactly what we need from the team captain in such a vital game. Assuming Neville doesn’t play in the middle I’m cautiously optimistic we can get something from this one.

In case anybody's in any doubt or didn't see the goal AJ did not deliberately handle the ball!! It looks as if it fell onto the back part of his shoulder and arm so Wiley did not do us any favours ? it was a perfectly legitimate goal.

Gerry
totally agree with you but for this one as Fiorentina play with attacking full backs I would like to see us play with Pienaar right and Baines left with Arteta Carsley Cahill/Osman with Aj floating and Yak keeping them pushed back up front.
Back 4 speaks for itself Hibbo/Neville Yobo Jags Lescott.
At a pinch I might go with Cahill/Osman in place of Aj till 2nd half but patience and support all the way through is the key. Let's not let pressure on the terraces reach the players.

I would just like to state on here that if any player was due a slice of luck regarding a goal it is AJ.. Thats just the type of goal that brings some justice to the disgraceful decisions he has been on the end of and I am chuffed for him I really am, he hasnt figured from the start a great deal this season due to bad luck (again) with injuries and also with the suited formation Moyes chooses but he has still nine goals to his name and I for one would seriously consider starting with both Yak and AJ on Wednesday as I cannot see the point in doing one up top in a game we need goals from...Just a word also for James Vaughan, another player cursed with bad luck it seems, the one thing Vaughan has on his side is time though and I hope he can one day get himself in a condition of fitness and be able to play free from injuries, we have seen too many players careers wrecked ..

Jay, you’ve hit the nail on the head regarding the ability of their full backs and they did cause us real problems in the first leg. We certainly lacked a creative presence in the middle and Osman in particular was wholly ineffective out wide both in getting forward and protecting the full back position he would undoubtedly have performed much better in the middle. Given a choice between him and Arteta I think Arteta would be the better option as he would afford us a greater physical presence. A very interesting line up indeed and well worth consideration, particularly the inclusion of Baines.

Great report, as always, Ken.

Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. have been playing midweek games in Europe, then turning up at places like Sunderland playing rubbish but winning 1-0, for years! I for one didn?t really care about the performance I just wanted a result for the boys, to keep the pressure on Luckypool, after such a disappointment against Fiorentina.

I would love to see the Yak and AJ from the start on Wednesday. I also agree with Gerry that if Carsley is picked Neville should be dropped to the bench. If Baines is fit, get him on and give him, and Lescott, licence to bomb on. We need goals and have got to go for it ??..

In Moyes we trust??..COYB

Never understand why people have to slag off players... they play for Everton and we should support them ? not get on their backs. Cars has been one of the most consistant players over the last couple of years and we wouldn?t be where we are now without him
And just for David Moore: Jack Rodwell is a centre-back, that's where he captained the England U16 to the Victory Shield the other year. He has two good feet and looks like a good prospect for the future.

@Tony on carsley.
I'll tell you what all the fuss is about. In the time Carsley as been at Everton look at our league placings over those years, and you will notice a trend. With Carsley playing regularly we finish higher up the table. When injured we finish lower down the table. People say Everton are inconsistent due to having up and down seasons. This is because we finish lower down when Carsley is injured. For eg.Rooneys final season when Carsley was injured we finish 4th to bottom. The following season, no Rooney, Carsley fit, we finish 4th.

Big call Ian. It’s one thing to support Carsley and justify his spot but it’s another to clutch at straws and find that he is the strong correlation for us winning more games than we lose due to him playing. A bit over the top mate.

RE-steve Its not a big call really stats speak for themselves we win more with cars than without him he does the job most players hate doing sits deep and mops up anything that comes his way then he knows he cant take six men on and set up goals so uses the easy ball and gives it to our creaitve players
