News Headlines & Features

Vaughan starts for the Reserves
His knee fully healed, striker plays 68 mins
4 Mar - The good news from Goodison Park is that James Vaughan is finally fit again after another long injury lay-off, this time with torn knee ligaments sustained last November. His surgery was a great success and Vaughan is apparently kicking as strongly and as well as ever. He run out against Sunderland Reserves tonight after being back in full training for the past couple of weeks and played 68 minutes as the Blues' second string held the Black Cats to a 0-0 draw.

Everton trio on the bench
England 4 - 0 Slovakia
28 Mar - Ah... the glory, the honour... three Everton players playing for England... Or more likely: — you guessed it, sitting on the bench.

Messers Lescott, Jagielka and Baines are all named as substitutes by Fabio Capello for an England friendly against Slovakia at glorious Wembley Stadium, where the score is 1-0 after an early goal from Emile Heskey, two substitutions already, and three more at half-time... and only six allowed. You do the maths!!! Last Sub: Carrick (after a rather crisp headed goal from a certain Wayne Rooney); no debut for Leighton Baines, one of only three outfield subs not used... all Everton players.

Tim beats the Everton drum
“I love playing for Everton ”
23 Mar - This nice article by Oliver Kay in The Times hits on all the salient points that support why Tiny Tim is perhaps Everton's most important player (as evidenced by his absence in the weekend's defeat at Portsmouth) and why we love this Aussie so much. Some great stuff about his charity work, about taking his chances with Milwall, and David Moyes being the one to take a chance on him in the Premier League. Oh, and did we mention, he just loves Everton!

Good run comes to a dismal end
Portsmouth 2 - 1 Everton
21 Mar - Peter Crouch's aerial threat proved the difference in a physical contest at Fratton Park as Everton, minus another key player in the form of the injured Tim Cahill, fell to only their second defeat in 19 games. Leighton Baines gave them the perfect start when he scored a cracker from a 4th-minute free-kick and Everton looked in good shape for a while. Pompey wrestled the initiative away from them, though, winning a dubious corner that eventually led to an equaliser from Crouch who powered over Joleon Lescott to head past Tim Howard. Jô wasted a good chance before the break and Everton should have come out and won the game in the second half but that honour went instead to the home team when Crouch was lefty unmarked to score an easy second from a corner. A poor display in the end by the Blues, whose massive injury woes finally came home to roost.

Portsmouth vs Everton
Match Preview
21 Mar - Everton's quest for surprise Champions League qualification continues this weekend with a trip to Portsmouth. Joseph Yobo is the latest injury problem after pulling a hamstring in training and that could mean a return to central defence for Phil Jagielka and a debut for Lars Jacobsen. Tim Cahill should start, though, after shaking off a calf strain. Kick off is 12:45pm with live coverage on Sky.

Yobo Out for a Month
More injury woes for Moyes
20 Mar - Joseph Yobo will miss the Portsmouth game and could be out for up to a month with a hamstring problem. David Moyes revealed the blow at his press conference ahead of the trip to Fratton Park on Saturday. The Nigerian international now faces a race to be fit for Everton's FA Cup semi-final showdown with Manchester United at Wembley.

FA Cup semi-final ticket details
17 Mar - Everton have announced that tickets for the FA Cup semi final against Manchester United at Wembley go on sale in phased allocations starting Monday 23rd March at 8am. Priority for the 31,825 tickets allocated to the Blues will go Season Ticket holders and Executive members but the Club expect a small allocation to be available supporters with a purchase history for home games from any of this season's fixtures after 6th April. Tickets are priced at £24.50, £34.30, and £44.00, £53.80, with £10 concessions for supporters under 16 and over 65.

Blues hold off Stoke fight-back
Everton 3 -1 Stoke City
14 Mar - Everton withstood a second-half rally by Stoke to eventually kill the game late on with a moment of class by Marouane Fellaini. Goals from Jô and Lescott had put the Blues in complete control but a headed goal early in the second half by the criminally unmarked Shawcross changed the complexion of the game entirely, leaving the home side struggling to contain Stoke's concerted fight-back. But Fellaini's Jô-esque goal sealed the points in injury time, the Belgian, thankfully sporting a new hairstyle, deftly bringing the ball down and firing home via a deflection.

Everton vs Stoke City
Match Preview
13 Mar - Focus returns to the Premier League this weekend as Everton take on Stoke City who are in the midst of a battle against relegation back to the Championship. Andy van der Meyde is David Moyes's only new injury worry as the Blues aim for a sixth successive home win in all competitions that would keep the pressure on Villa and Arsenal in the chase for fourth place. KO is 3pm tomorrow, the fixture returning to its originally-scheduled date.

Another Moyes masterstroke
More plaudits for Davey's Goodison evolution
10 Mar - An illuminating article in the Mail reveals how a six-hour dissection by David Moyes of the abysmal defeat at Wigan in November followed by a low-key night of team bonding at a local casino helped Everton turn their season around and embark on their current run of superb form despite crippling injuries. It echoes similar "group therapy" sessions organised at the manager's behest that have reaped rich dividends in team spirit and results on the pitch in seasons past. Link is now fixed

Blues come from behind to sink Boro
Everton 2 - 1 Middlesbrough; Manchester United in the semis
8 Mar - Everton are Wembley-bound for the first time in 14 years where they'll meet Manchester United again after coming back from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough in a windswept encounter at Goodison. Having continued the atrocious football that characterised the goalless draw at Blackburn in the first half and only threatening Boro at set-pieces, the Blues fell behind when David Wheater powered a header that Tim Howard couldn't keep out. Five minutes after the break, though, Tim Cahill swung in a peach of a cross and Marouane Fellaini's looping header floated into the net over 'keeper Brad Jones. Seven minutes later, half-time substitute Louis Saha rose to head home Steven Pienaar's cross to turn the tie on its head. The Blues were better in the second half overall and Leighton Baines rattled the bar with a free kick but one silly foul too many almost let Boro back in when Howard spilled Gary O'Neill's swerving free kick but Joleon Lescott did brilliantly to hack it clear. Match report

Everton vs Middlesbrough
FA Cup Quarter Final Preview
7 Mar - Everton face Middlesbrough in the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup almost seven years to the day after they played the same club at the same stage in Walter Smith's last match in charge. David Moyes will be hoping that the latest chapter of the Club's evolution under his tenure will be a place at Wembley in the semi finals he has key injuries for which to compensate as he prepares for this televised clash at Goodison Park. Kick off is 4pm with live televised coverage on Setanta Sports.

Double honours for Everton in February
Moyes and Jagielka land monthly awards
6 Mar - David Moyes and Phil Jagielka have been recognised for their sterling efforts last month by being named Barclays Manager and Player of the Month respectively. Moyes oversaw wins over Bolton and West Bromwich Albion and victories over Liverpool and Aston Villa in the FA Cup, while Jagielka continued his virtually flawless form in defence. Moyes has now won the Manager of the Month award five times but this is a first for Jagielka who was also rewarded with an England call-up recently.

Impotent Blues grind out another bore draw
Blackburn Rovers 0 - 0 Everton
4 Mar - Everton and Blackburn kicked and rushed their way to a wretched 0-0 draw on a frigid night at Ewood Park, the tedium of hoofed balls forward punctuated only briefly by a Jô half volley that deflected just wide after only 10 seconds, Steven Pienaar's seemingly goalbound effort that was pushed behind by Jason Brown, and Joleon Lescott's late volley that cleared the bar by an inch. The Blues might have had two penalties, first when Andre Ooier clearly stopped Pienaar's drive with his arm and the same player was upended by Stephen Warnock, while for Blackburn, who looked every inch a relegation-threatened side, Warnock crashed a free kick off the bar and Jason Roberts was denied by Tim Howard when sent clean through. Overall, though, this was a forgetful and frustrating evening for an Everton side desperately short of inspiration in the absence of Mikel Arteta. Two points tossed away in the chase of Aston Villa who lost at Manchester City.

Blackburn Rovers vs Everton
Match Preview
3 Mar - The injuries keep piling up but so do the fixtures as the Blues enter the last 10 games of the Premier League season with a potentially tricky midweek trip to Blackburn on Wednesday. Tony Hibbert joins the list of absentees after picking up a thigh strain against West Brom and the same injury will restrict Louis Saha to the role of super-sub, but Leon Osman will probably start, with Phil Neville switching to right back. KO is 8pm.

A star of the future?
Everton sign Femi Orenuga, 15
2 Mar - Remember the name...? Kenny Oluwafemi "Femi" Orenuga is Everton's latest acquisition — a 15-year-old winger of Nigerian descent snapped up from from Southend United for a scholarship with the Everton Academy that will start officially on 1 July, after he completes his GCSEs. Orenuga is Southend's youngest ever player after he came on as a sub in the FA Cup last year. Having knocked back Manchester United, he thinks Everton represent the best opportunity for him to progress: "When I went to Everton I saw how many youth players had gone through into the first team and I think I will have a better chance with them than some of the other sides who were interested."
