News Headlines & Features

A gameplan that does not work
Manchester City 2 - 0 Everton
24 Sep - Everton made just one change from the side that beat Wigan at Goodison Park last weekend, although six of them were in action midweek in the struggle to beat West Brom in extra time. Once again, Cahill, the City nemesis, started this one up front but he failed to score as Everton held out for most of the game but failed to use their rare set-pieces effectively, and eventually went down to a deflected goal by sub Balotelli, followed by a second when Drenthe gave the ball away cheaply and Milner scored, leaving Moyes's much-vaunted gameplan in tatters.

Manchester City vs Everton
Match Preview
23 Sep - Everton travel along the M62 to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City for the televised lunchtime kickoff, hoping to keep alive their hoodoo over Roberto Mancini's men — the Blues are the last team to have won a League game at Eastlands having completed the double over City for the past two seasons. KO is 12:45pm.

New player incoming!
But how will Mucha react to this one?
23 Sep - Everton have signed goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann on a short-term deal until January. David Moyes is keen to bolster his options by bringing in the USA international, who is a free agent following his release by Wolves at the end of last season. He joins compatriot Tim Howard as the third senior 'keeper and will provide cover for Moyes's first choice, Tim Howard, but it must say something about the level of trust he has in Slovakia international Jan Mucha.

Neville blasts home a cracking winner
Everton 2 - 1 West Bromwich Albion [aet]
21 Sep - Everton huffed and puffed their way into the fourth round of the Carling Cup as West Bromwich Albion parked their bus at Goodison. The Blues barely threatened the visitors' goal in a dull first half. Tchoyi and Odemwingie wasted the best chances of the the first 45 minutes, but when Odemwingie got free again and was brought down by Mucha early in the second half, Brunt converted the penalty without any trouble. The Blues, lethargic and unimaginative, were heading out until Fellaini smashed home an equaliser to force extra time, where a drive from Phil Neville put the Blues into the fourth round draw.

Everton vs West Bromwich Albion
Carling League Cup, Round 3
21 Sep - Everton have the fourth round of the Carling Cup in their sights this evening as they host West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park. Despite the Premier League opposition, David Moyes may consider mixing up his starting line-up and possibly handing the likes of Royston Drenthe, Apostolos Vellios or Denis Stracqualursi their first starts. KO is 8pm.

More gloomy mortgage news

20 Sep - More information has come out about the mortgage deed that Everton signed with Vibrac Corporation, a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. The Guardian report that Everton have forward-sold their central Premier League broadcast income not only for this season but for the 2012-13 campaign as well, a move that Everton CEO Robert Elstone says is the continuation of a loan strategy that's been in place for four years.

Late strikes seal first home win
Everton 3 - 1 Wigan Atthletic
17 Sep - Everton eventually prevailed against Wigan and grabbed their first home win of the season thanks to two terrific strikes late on by Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe. In a mostly frustrating performance, the Blues had to strike back through Phil Jagielka to cancel out Di Santo's opener and looked unlikely to carve out a winner until the new boys intervened.

Everton vs Wigan Athletic
Match Preview
17 Sep - Everton are hoping to register their first home win of the new season at the third attempt as Wigan, without a goal away from home so far and without a win in this fixture since 2005, come to town. David Moyes is counting only Victor Anichebe as unavailable through injury, with Louis Saha fit again to challenge for a starting berth. Royston Drenthe, meanwhile, is tipped to make his full debut after scoring for the Reserves on Tuesday. KO is 3pm.

No blue skies for Everton
Swiss Ramble on Everton Finance
15 Sep - For an independent yet intelligent and informed analysis of Everton's current financial situation — and the past that has produced it — this excellent blog article is of the highest standard. Swiss Ramble writes a blog about football finance and it is full of accurate detail and reasoned conclusions. However, for Everton fans, it's not an inspiring read, and underlines, as if it were needed, the desperate situation that prompted action from the Blue Union. He predicts decline rather than stagnation if Everton do not bring the cost-base down by £15M and realise around £10M a year net from player sales.

Drenthe on target for Reserves
Everton Res 2 - 1 Aston Villa Res
13 Sep - Everton new-boys Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi turned out for the Reserves this evening in Widnes against Aston Villa and the Dutch winger was on target with the second goal as the Blues won 2-1. Magaye Gueye was the provider, having laid on the first goal for Ross Barkley.

New Boys to play Villa
Reserves game switched to Widnes
12 Sep - Evertonians who want to see more of the two new loan signings will get a chance tomorrow evening when the Reserves take on Aston Villa. The game was scheduled for Finch Farm without the public but the club has decided to switch the venue so fans can attend and run the rule over Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi as they start the long journey towards full readiness for playing their part in David Moyes's revitalized Premier League campaign. Kick-off is 7pm Tuesday, tickets are £4 at the turnstyle.

“The solution could hardly be clearer”
Blue Union Press Release
12 Sep - The Blue Union have released a statement to the media saying they were pleased with the many Evertonians who attended a pre-match demonstration on Saturday that sent a clear message to the club's hierarchy: enough is enough, it's time for change. In the statement, they recap some of the key issues that have become obscured over the weekend, and reiterate that their proposed solution could not be clearer: bring in a group of professionals to push through the sale of the club to an appropriate buyer.

Dominant Everton rue two lost points
Everton 2 - 2 Aston Villa
10 Sep - A great first half of good attacking football saw Everton go in one goal ahead at the break thanks to an excellent finish by Osman, but Everton increasingly sat back and Petrov equalised out of nothing after a clear penalty appeal was denied at the other end. Everton finally earned a spot kick that the superb Baines converted and they thought that was game, set and match until Agbonlahor planted an easy header for Villa to draw level again. The Blues pressed hard in the closing stages but couldn't find a way past the excellent Shay Given, the Irishman pulling off a superb stop to deny substitute Apostolos Vellios.

Everton v Aston Villa
Match Preview
10 Sep - Another annoying International break is thankfully over and footballl returns to Goodison Park with the visit of Aston Villa for the first game of a three-match home stand. Optimism on the injury front with the return of Coleman and Gueye and Baines being passed fit is tainted somewhat by the manager declaring that his new loan signings, Drenthe and Stracqualursi, haven't had enough preparation. Both are in the squad, though, and could feature against one of the Blues' bogey sides. Kick-off at 3pm BST.

Elstone rejects calls for interim board

8 Sep - Everton CEO, Robert Elstone, has hit back at The Blue Union's calls for an interim Board of Directors to be appointed to process the potential sale of the Club. "The board of directors... have an ongoing responsibility to do what is right by Evertonians," he told evertonfc.com. "The suggestion of a completely new group of individuals coming in and essentially doing what the current board is doing is risible and completely unnecessary."

Drenthe has a point to prove
Midfielder admits he is finished with Real Madrid
7 Sep - Loan signing Royston Drenthe is looking to kick-start his career at Everton after admitting he is finished with Real Madrid. Drenthe was the standout player of the Netherlands Under-21 side and his performances in that age group's victorious European Championship campaign in 2007 secured his move to the Bernabeue. After one season he began to fall from favour as Real brought in a succession of new managers. "I think Everton is a really good step for me. I have to train hard to get in the team and then I can demonstrate my quality in the games. I have something to prove because my time at Real Madrid has ended already. It ended a year ago."

Barkley makes U-21 bow
Rodwell wears captain's armband for Three Lions
6 Sep - Ross Barkley made his debut appearance for the England U-21's side last night, playing three quarters of the game as the Three Lions came back from a goal down to beat Israel 4-1. Everton were well represented, with Jack Rodwell captaining England for the first half before being rested for the second. Both young stars will be in contention for the Blues' home game against Aston Villa this coming weekend.

More injury headaches
Anichebe, Baines... and now Cahill?
5 Sep - David Moyes faces more selection headaches as Leighton Baines suffered a hamstring injury in training with the England squad on Sunday that has not responded to treatment, so he has been withdrawn from Tuesday night's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at Wembley and allowed to return to Everton. This is in addition to the injury sustained by Victor Anichebe, on international duty with Nigeria, and it appears that Tim Cahill may also be injured after limping off the field for Australia.

Productive Blue Union Meeting

3 Sep - Reports are filtering in that the Blue Union meeting today was well attended, with 500-600 Blues and representatives of the local and national media turning up, and it was productive in terms of consolidating support for continuing action. A peaceful protest march is planned for next Saturday, ahead of the Aston Villa game.

Blue Union Public Meeting
Saturday at 12 noon in The Casa
2 Sep - The Blue Union will hold a public meeting in Liverpool city centre on 3 September 2011 to discuss the effectiveness of Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and his board, Everton's precarious financial position and, in light of the recent events occurring on transfer deadline day, supporters' genuine concerns over the future of Everton in the Premier League. The venue is The Casa on Hope St — the meeting will commence at 12:00 noon.
