Rodwell ready to step into the void

As the Everton squad prepares for life after Mikel Arteta, one of the team's bright hopes for the future says that he is ready to step into the breach and fill the talented Spaniard's boots.

Arteta left Evertonians reeling on transfer deadline day when he signed for Arsenal in a reported £10m deal that meant a team already struggling for creativity lost one of its most gifted members.

But Rodwell is confident the remaining players will pull through.

?Mikel is a great player,? he is quoted in the Daily Post. ?He's a good lad as well and he will be sorely missed. It's a good opportunity for him, so we all wish him the best.

?But we've got a lot of young players who can fill in. I'm ready to step up and fill his boots, definitely.?

The 19 year-old struggled through an indifferent campaign last season because of injury and poor form, but feels he's getting back to his best.

?I'm ready now,? he says. ?I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused. I believe this is the season for me.

?What I've been missing in my career is 30 games back to back and getting a good run of form and confidence, so hopefully this season I can do that.

?Last season was frustrating for me. I had a lot of injuries and couldn't really get a pattern of football going. I wasn't really fit, but hopefully that won't happen this season.?
