?I wanted to be remembered as an Everton player?
Duncan Ferguson has revealed that he resisted interest from teams like Wigan and Portsmouth towards the end of his playing days because he wanted to finish his career at Goodison Park and be remembered as an Everton player.

The Scot, who is back in the Blue fold and working towards earning his coaching credentials, spoke with evertontv ahead of this weekend's planned tribute to his former teammate Gary Speed. Ferguson and a number of Everton players from the team of the 1996 to 1998 era will be at Goodison to lead a minute's applause in the midfielder's memory, a week after the country learned of his sudden death aged just 42.

Ferguson created Speed's goal on his debut against Newcastle United in August 1996 — coincidentally, both players would leave Everton for St James' Park in controversial circumstances two years later — and he describes his shock at Speed's death.

?I was sick to the pit of my stomach. I thought it must be a mistake,? Ferguson said.

?And when it started to sink in, you start thinking it must have been a heart attack or something like that. To find out the truth was so tragic.

?My favourite game for Everton was against Newcastle at home. It was also Gary's debut for Everton. We beat them 2-0 and I really enjoyed it. I set up Gary's goal.?
