Vellios presses claims with Reserves treble

First-half hat-trick will hopefully catch Moyes's eye
Apostolos Vellios, seemingly frozen out of first-team action since early December has done his claims for greater involvement a power of good with a first-half hat-trick against Blackburn for the Reserves this evening. The Blues' second string ran out 4-2 winners after Jose Baxter tacked on a fourth after Vellios had had another disallowed.

Despite not seeing any action beyond a six-minute cameo at Sunderland on Boxing Day the Greek teenager remains Everton's highest-scoring striker with three goals — and only Leighton Baines has more goals in the team with four.

It is Denis Stracqualursi who has still to find the net despite increasing playing time, who has been getting the nod as a starter or the go-to attacking substitute in recent weeks, though, leaving Vellios either out of the squad altogether or forced to watch as an unused sub.
