Yohan Cabaye has issued an apology for his role in the altercation that saw Tim Cahill sent off at the final whistle of Everton's 3-1 win over Newcastle.

The Australian received a red card from referee Andre Marriner for grabbing the Frenchman by the neck, apparently in response to something Cayabe said.

Cabaye said that he was sorry for the exchange with Cahill:

"I would like to apologise for the cross words I exchanged with Tim Cahill which resulted in his red card and my booking on the final whistle.

"It was unnecessary and, regrettably, the result of frustration and disappointment, all in the heat of the moment. It is out of character and for that I am sorry."

Cabaye was also involved in an incident with a Goodison ballboy in the first half which may or may not have something to do with Cahill's reaction. The Frenchman apologised to the ballboy too at half-time.
