Everton cagey on Naismith move

Weekend visit to Finch Farm claimed
Steven Naismith is believed to have visited Finch Farm on Saturday, and completed an initial fitness test but did not undergo a full medical over the weekend. Everton staff wanted to see how the former Rangers player's right knee has healed after he had surgery on it in November 2011 to repair anterior cruciate ligament damage. That injury kept him sidelined for the rest of last season.

That operation followed a similar procedure on his left knee in 2008 which ruled him out for eight months, and Everton are understandably concerned as they assess whether both injuries have caused any lasting problems.

Sky Sports are reporting it's their understanding that Naismith has now undergone extensive medicals and that so far the Blues have found no major issues.

They are expected to push ahead with their bid to sign Naismith, ahead of Stoke City, West Brom and West Ham who are waiting in the wings should talks break down.

Sky Sports are a lot more positive, us beating out the mighty Wigan and Hammers for his much sought-after signature.... Umm by other mediocre mid-table sides!

It is what it is David. If you've got cash to splash you'd probably not be interested in signing an SPL player, with two dodgy knees who's not kicked a ball for most of a season. Fingers crossed, their loss......

I'm not adverse to Naismith, especially on a free. It might mean Vic moves on, and I guess we might get £1-2 million for him.

If Baines goes to Man Utd, and Pranjic comes in to replace him on a free, then we could be in a position where we have £20 million+ in positive transfer business and have reasonable replacements, which might mean we don't have to sell any further players...

Spot on Jeremy. There's no negative to this deal and its great that we are doing some early business for once...

We once took a risk on another player with a "dodgy leg" after two breaks -. Peter Reid - and funnily enough I don't remember Man U, Liverpool or any other "top"clubs chasing him.

Yep, this deal really makes sense. Definite sell on potential, will be on decent wages, and we get a potentially very good second striker for very little. Demba Ba turned out alright as well didnt he?

Also, I think getting in senior players before the start of the season is essential for squad/fan morale. We just really need a creative mid...(Please let Pienarr go Spurs...)

I'd expect deals to start happening generally in the transfer market now that

a) the euro's are over and
b) players starting to come back from holiday and
c) players contracts generally expire end of june don't they?

So transfers before 1st July usually few and far between...

All I ask is if Baines/Fellani are going or Pienaar/Donovan are not coming back then we get it sorted well before any deadlines so we are not chasing about like blue arsed flies again.

Philip 938 - excellent reply about Peter Reid. Some people on here need to realise that we do NOT have a lot of (nee - any) money and, if we get a freebie, we should not knock it. Give the player a frickin' chance before we start with the whining and whinging!

Good move. I've said all along there is no need to go splashing the cash this summer with the amount of great free transfers out there. Great to get some business done early for once.

Seems we have missed the boat on Fernandes or Barnetta though.

I seem to recall that Andy Gray had a dodgy knee too. He didn't turn out too bad either!

Lescott had dodgy knee but doesnt miss too many games

Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger right? He'll be playing with those knees until his mid 30's.

Old crock McGarth managed in the days when medical science wasn't 'medical science'. You were took a few shots, drunk a silly amount of pints and got on with it.

He'll be a good good signing and - as Jeremy rights points out - in our circumstances, one we should not be disheartened with.

As Phillip also points out, Peter Red didn't do too bad. 4th in the world footballer of the year awards 1985 wasn't he?! Don't think Naismith will quite be emulating those giddy heights but totally wrong to write him off.

I am actually very happy about this deal!! Absolute win win! Realize my post seems negative but just thought the sky report was funny... Hoping we nail it down and that he is fit and healthy!

This is a great deal, if it goes through. Free transfer for an international who has already formed a successful partnership with Jelavic before??

Hope we can secure this deal and then try and get a creative midfielder such as Pienaar or Donovan.

I would try to keep Baines, unless Man Utd offer £20M plus, then we have to sell for that money.

Lescott's knee injury was nothing to do with football though...

Any aquisition with the ability and experience such as Naismith on a freebie has to be good. Only time will tell if his knee is shot. Hopefully not and he slots in good with the Blues. If he was thirtyish then I would say forget him.

My main concern is the prospect of losing good English players.
Foreign players are over here for the money and have no great loyalty to any club.

For example : I reckon that if Jelavic has a good next season then offers will come in from so called 'bigger clubs' and he will move on !

I've spent much of my working life chasing around the middle east on contract. Money is the driving issue and footballers life at the top is short normally.

Home grown players are the ones to keep and let the foreign mercenaries move around wherever they can get the most bucks.

We should build Everton on the backbone of the likes of Baines, Jagieka and Rodwell.

Hopefully young Barkley will fulfill his potential too.

The only foreign players who want to stay at EFC are the older ones who are not wanted so much elsewhere.
Its not a coincidence that Heitinga has never been coveted elsewhere and Cahill, Distin and co are now nearing the end of their careers at the top.

Think carefully before you encourage our club to let Baines or Jags go, unless its them who want to leave.

They are the nucleus of players who are much more likely to show loyalty to the club.

Looks like we are being called bitters with no money who goes for freebies haha.
Anyhoo Naismith is a foward or midfielder? I assume he's a forward from the posts on TW but papers saying he's a midfielder. Must be very versatile till there's some confusion.
Thank god they ain't saying he's a CB.

Peter Barry – you're absolutely right. He should chase Messi instead...

Rubbish. If your domestic helper recommended her bestest pal you can be sure they're lesbians not that I am against any particular sexual orientation. If Moyes needs to ask his staff who he should sign then I would ask who signed the Cahill, Arteta, Lescott 'gems' in the first place.

Moyes should partner Jelavic with Anichebe and end this silly spending. IMWT.

Naismith is not the biggest of lads at 5 foot 10 and he's not the quickest. His stats have him at a goal every three games - which isn't bad but it's not top class for a striker.

When I've seen him play for Rangers (on the telly) he seems to float behind the main striker and pick up scraps - though his partnership with Jelavic was developing nicely before his injury and he fed him lots of chances.

He's not a bad midfielder - he reminds me of a young Alan Smith before he was crocked and became shite.

Jelavic rates him highly according to the press - and that's good enough for me at the moment. It's no lose gamble anyway as he's cost us nowt but his signing fee and wages. I've a feeling either Vic or much more likely Cahill will be moving on soon.

"It's no lose gamble anyway as he's cost us nowt but his signing fee and wages" - Apparently not for Peter Barry, who has tried to put a negative slant/Moyes bashing on a free signing of a Scottish International. Love this site sometimes.

Trevor, are you trying to be funny, or was that quasi-jingoistic post for real? There are plenty of examples of foreign loyalty, and conversely many examples of english disloyalty. Remember Rooney, where was his loyalty? or almost swerved off the road Cashley Cole?
Loyalty will be always be brought or sold. A select few may break the mould, aka Zola, and we love them for it. But let me ask you this; how many of us would swap jobs for a 50% payrise and better career prospects?

Anyway...The deal is apparently completed according to Skysports. Great bit of business and I hope that the completion of it signals that we don't have to sell because of significantly reduced wages and the financial rewards of a good FA cup run. However, we MUST sign at least one creative midfielder, even if they come in on a free. Naismith will add something, but if the creative burden falls on Osman until January, we will be struggle for the first half of the season. If we can't get Pienarr, we must look elsewhere, and if need money, than we must sell. Creativity is essential for this team, because however good Jelavic is, he can't score if know one is giving him the ball.
