Rodwell in England squad? Hmmm...

Great news about Rodwell's inclusion in the England squad or is it right at this time? The lad has fought a long fight getting back from injury and Everton open against Man Utd in 10 days.

I think this lad can really shine for the Blues this season as he was before his injury last season but the timing of this England friendly is not good and I would prefer Baines, Jagielka and in particular Rodwell be fighting fresh for the Man Utd game.

IMO it might sharpen them up a touch.

Rodwell and Jags (following his recent injury) could do with some game time.

Bainsey is always fit so we can only hope noone gets injured.

I heard this morning that pressure from managers had made next week`s International the last to be played in the week before the new season start. It was always a daft idea anyway!

We are probably the only club in the country that will benefit from this international fixture. It's another game to improve match fitness after the Indonesia fiasco.

That said, what a stupid time to have a friendly. I understand it's a FIFA directive as well - a money spinner basically. Nuggets!

I've got to agree, I think it'll give them vital game time.

I can't remember such a quiet pre-season ever before?! I know the Indonesia tournament was cancelled but there still seems to have been very few games.

Hoping Rodwell will finally start to convert some of that potential into actual quality performances this year. Him and Fellaini together, fully fit and on-form, is quite an exciting prospect.

Why would Moyes let Rodwell play for England as he hasn't done anything for us yet?

He needs to focus on Everton first.

I doubt he has much say in the matter, Thomas.

The idea of an international friendly less than three days (night game?) before the start of the season is just beyond ridiculous.

Not quite sure what Rodwell has done to deserve this but will hopefully aid his confidence and fitness. And dare I say ramp up his sale value...

These England games are a joke... is it a surprise that Cole, Lescott, Terry, Gerrard, Rooney and Johnson are rested? Ohhhh yeah.. they all play for the big clubs.. so experimental means, lets not annoy the big clubs, select their reserves so it looks like we are picking their players, but select anyone outside the top 5's players to make up the team.... hate these friendlies... Every player should be available!!!!

Its all good.

Rodwell may even get some decent coaching and be told to do something other than pass sideways. Last time he played for England he looked a different player. Hopefully he can do it again.

I thought Heitinga was out of favour with Holland after the Euros ? Daft time to play friendlies..

How has Rodwell got in the England squad? All he does is pass sideways or give the ball away. He needs to improve to get anywhere near our first team, nevermind England.

Apparently he plays quite well for England.

I agree with you,. though, Mike: he's pretty uninspiring for Everton, after showing some wonderful promise.

I vaguely recall him lashing in a couple of great goals in one game... Perish the inevitable thought that his wonderful club manager may have discouraged him for doing that... or playing 'risky' forward balls...???

No, that can't possibly be the explanation.

Well, I can't see him being in the starting eleven for us against Man U, so I don't see what the problem is, he did look very good last time he got a game for England, so a repeat performance might be a good confidence booster for him.

I thought Rodwell started last season well until Martin Atkinson sent him off V the red shite. There's a player in there. Just needs an injury free run.

Michael K "I vaguely recall him lashing in a couple of great goals in one game... Perish the inevitable thought that his wonderful club manager may have discouraged him for doing that... or playing 'risky' forward balls...???"

Yes that's right Michael , Moyes actually sits all his players down individually and actively discourages them from shooting or passing it forwards. Indeed, it is why one of his most recent signings, Jelavic never scores or why he was so keen to get Piennar back because he always passes the ball backwards never looking for a through ball.

Many years ago supporters took it as an honour and were proud to have a player called up for England. I can remember the "Osgood" for England " and the outcry about the neglect of Rodney Marsh. The last time I felt proud of an Everton player's call up was for Bob Latchford.

Meaningless friendlies, the eagerness of coaches to call up the latest media favourite(never happened with Alf Ramsay) and the use of mass substitutions have utterly devalued international caps. I honestly wouldn't care if no Everton players were selected by England. I can, perhaps, make an exception for Rodwell as it might just do his fitness and confidence a bit of good but for any player to get a serious injury taking part in this pointless nonsense would be disgraceful.

What on earth is wrong with us. We have a local player, developed through our academy, who has played exceptionally for England at every level and was a great prospect at EFC but held up by a run of injuries. Congratulations to the lad and the sooner he is back in our first team playing as well as we know he can the better. I'm not sure where he fits now though because on paper we have the central midfield from heaven.

Prediction: Rodwell has a stormer for 17 minutes, then pulls up with an injury of some sort - it seems fairly minor to begin with but ends up keeping him out until Christmas.

I couldn't help noticing that he's the only one with a different number this season - 8 instead of 26. Maybe it's Moyes saying to him: "Right, lad - it's time to step up and prove yourself".
8 used to be the cool number when I was growing up. It was what 10 is today. The midfield supremo number. But I digress...

I think that Rodwell may just be at that mature age to show what he really has this season if he can stay fit. With the pressure for places even greater this season, with the likes of Gueye and Barkley pushing also, we can only hope the midfield as a whole will come good and be more consistant.

Without the consistency in the middle from all the players concerned, we will be just another also ran team this season.

Yes there is only one No 8... and the one and only Mr Alan Ball took to wear that shirt. If Our Jack can resemble that man's prestige, he will be glorified in Everton's history forever. I hope and wish the lad comes good for his club this season...

As has been said, for our internationals this could actually work out well as a timely sharpener against quality opposition ahead of our season start (and remember we're not kicking off till Monday so have a couple of extra days for recovery/prep). Quite apart from the lack of pre-season games, our internationals obviously didn't rejoin till later anyway after a longer post-Euro break.

However, the principle of holding a round of friendly internationals 4 days before the opening game of the Premier League (apparently the biggest domestic league in the world) is so utterly ludicrous it beggars belief.
