Playing time was key for Mirallas

, 21 August, 45comments  |  Jump to most recent
New signing Kevin Mirallas met the press for the first time since joining Everton today and confirmed that it was the prospect of regular first-team football at Goodison that convinced him to choose the Blues over Arsenal.

Mirallas, who arrived from Olympiacos in a £6m deal on Sunday, took part in a photo shoot to show off the new, all-white third kit jersey which Everton will wear at Aston Villa on Saturday.

"Discussions were at quite an advanced stage with Arsenal," the 24-year-old Belgian said, "but... I was convinced that what was important for me at this stage of my career, embarking on new league, is to get plenty of time on the field.

"I had a possibility of playing more games and longer periods with Everton. From the word go I was really impressed by the extent to which the manager wanted me here.

"He also showed a lot of confidence in me in the conversations we had and he really wanted me to come to the club and that was another influence, definitely."

Curious that it has different collar to the other 2 kits. I like it a lot more than the crappy v-neck style. A nice lookin kit, would buy one if it didn't cost £50. bit steep init.

A French fry, Kev. Either that or he's wearing a shirt that was mistakenly ordered for Yak

Couldn't give a monkeys what shirt he wears as long he puts the leather sphere
filled with air in between the two sticks with a net connected to it on frequent occasions during the season

Fair enough, Phil. I thought you might mean a Chunky 'steak' Chip (eg, Rooney). Or even a Curly Fry (eg, Coloccini). Or - god forbid - a Crinkle Cut (eg, Neymar).

The motivation was based on potential for first team appearances but when was the last occasion when we beat one of the Sky 4 to a reasonable high profile signing?

Could it indicate a new upward curve for Everton FC and a breakthrough from the "best of the rest" to a genuine challenge for top 4?

Curious that Belgium haven't been successful cosidering they have Hazard, Kompany, Fellaini, and Miralles. I wonder if Fellaini will be happier and more consistent now his mate is here?

Paul - Belgium will come good, it's a pretty young side.

I genuinely believe we will make top 4 just as long as inevetiable injuries sustained are not too lengthy, but we do have depth in versitility.

Lets not carried away. I really hope we challenge for the top 4, but we've played one game. We have a talented squad, still need a couple more players in for depth. One thing going for us is a positive feeling among the squad.

Paul, I said somewhere else on here (the optimism thread?) that I thought this signing may be a good sign that the big Fella was sticking around

Warning: there is a BUT coming up here...

I'm impressed by the Youtube version of Mirallas I've seen, and I like the idea of him (a skillful wide man with a few tricks up his sleeve), and he's the right age, and he's Belgian (which is the cool nationality to be at the moment, football wise) and, to top it all, he's a Kev. But...

What makes him think he's going to get plenty of playing time? He'll get a chance to shine, for sure, but the same was true for Bily - who ended up not getting all that much playing time at all in the end. Tricky wingers are not noted for their consistency, are they? But Moyes will (reasonably enough) want him to deliver regularly. Otherwise, come January he'll be used as an impact sub.

Also, isn't it a bit insulting to the players we've got - who performed heroically last night - to make out he's going to be a cert on the team sheet?

Just saying, like.

Lets hope he's the new Kancheskis rather than the new Bily then! How's your negotiations with the club going Kev?
Ian Bennett
17 Posted 21/08/2012 at 23:09:45
I suspect Neville realises he will probably start less than half the games this season.

Bily came to a side with Pienaar, Cahill, Fellaini, and Arteta. I don't understand why we signed him being honest ... and where he was going to play ahead of that gang?

Kev - I would sack that agent of yours.

Kev Johnson
21 Posted 21/08/2012 at 23:32:58
I can't sack my agent, Steve S - it would cause family ructions. If my Uncle Bob gets the boot then it will have a serious knock-on effect on the number of Christmas presents I get this year.

Anyway, back to Mirallas. Phil (100 & 106) reckons he looks like a chip. I'm still struggling with the idea of that. Really struggling. Mind you, if we were to bring in someone on the opposite wing who looks like a fish then we'd have a hell of a partnership...

Kev Johnson
23 Posted 22/08/2012 at 00:06:53
Well, I heard he was angling for a move. Perch from Newcastle is another one in the frame...
Word is, we're also after Hernandez from Man Utd. You know, Chicharito - The Little Pea. We want him to play down the middle.

I've never understood why players take more money to rot on a bench rather than take less money - money that still makes you rich incidentally - and play regularly. (Pienaar a fine example)

I swear to God Almighty that I'd do exactly what this kid is doing. I'd want to play.

I think this kid, seeing playing time as a priority, is well grounded and wise beyond his years. Either that or he has, again IMO, really, really good advice from someone.

Either way who cares. His head is screwed on straight.

I'm very excited about Mirallas. I think he could be one hell of an addition.

Personally I do not think DM promises anyone regular 1st team football. This is kevins assesment of the situation and in a way saying that we have a much weaker squad. We do, of course have a smaller squad , but this still isn't the sort of thing I would like to hear a new signing say at a press confernce.
Think he will be the bees knees myself, but still better to play humble at the start, must have scared the shit out of him watching Ossie on monday!

I think you are probably right Tony, but with the size of our squad compared to Arsenals he probably is right.

Paul#135, still mostly a young team but I think Belgium will do well at the next world cup, Kompany, Vertongan, Vermalaan, Lukaku, Witsel, Defour, Dembele, Hazard and of course Mirallas and Fellaini. Quite a list of names.

As for Mirallas, I'm not reading too much into his comments. Moyes obviously has plans for him otherwise he wouldn't have signed him. I can't say I've seen him play but it's hard not to get excited by him judging by the reaction on here. Wenger always goes after skillfull and versatile forwards and is a renowned judge of potential. I'd love a couple more even on loan just to beef up the squad a bit.

With what he saw on Monday, he can't complain he is on the bench if we keep such a great performance week in week out.

I personally think, if he does well, he'll get more playing time than he would at Arsenal. We have a small squad and I'm sure he's aware of it. I don't think he's being arrogant but probably knows that Arsenal have quite a few midfielders that would be almost guaranteed first choice over him. He'd more likely get cup games and playing time when other players are injured at Arsenal. Just my opinion, anyway.

Yes, I think first team football is almost certainly assured. We have only one top striker, two natural left mids, and one, Gueye, is not first team material. We have debatedly one natural right mid (Coleman, although he is more of a wingback), so I think it is quite easy for Mirallas to see he will play with regularity. Arsenal on the other hand, have Walcott who can play wide right, Gervinho, Oxlade, Gervinho, who can play either wing position, as well as Podolski on the left, and Rosicky, who sometimes fills in on the left. They also have Podolksi and Giround for the striking positions, and Bendtner still hasn't left.

Billy didn't perform, but this guy looks different. Unlike the general failure of top Russian players in the league, Mirallas has also seen the likes of Vermalean and Fellaini star, and I think his game is well suited for the division. Fingers crossed :D

Wish people would stop referring to Coleman as some sort of defender. He's played once in a defensive position to my mind and that was the torrid injury ravaged side who let in five over in Portugal. And Coleman played left back. What a debut. If anyone ever sees him play right back for Everton, I'll be amazed. And wing backs went out with the Liverpool spice boy era.
Shane Corcoran

Nick, he was bought from Sligo where he played right-back so he's played more games there than anywhere else.

But I agree, there's little chance of Moyes playing him there.

Brendan, I ended up doing that.

David, even relative to Everton rumours this one really isn't in the slightest bit exciting but it's extremely similar to the young lad we signed from Dundalk last week, only not as likely.

The only reason I highlighted it was I so proud of myself having found it before anybody else on TW.

Now try to control yourself.

Wingback was used Nick, because for me he is between a right mid and a right back. And funnily enough, Coleman has had a career away from Everton, where he has played in a defensive position.

I remember being castigated by Dave Wilson a couple of years ago for suggesting our lack of wingers meant we were being forced to play wing backs...

Anybody that thinks wing backs are a thing of the past is sadly mistaken..

Will be interesting to see what team plays against Villa. Part of me expects that Moyes will play the same starting XI that performed so well on the first day with Naismtih joined on the bench by Mirallas. May depend on what Miracullas shows in training this week but usually Moyes's approach is to introduce new signings gently so my bet is that he gets his first start vs Leyton Orient on Wednesday.

I hope that some of Barkley, McAleny, Duffy, Gueye and Vellios head out on loan to the Championship as I'm not sure they are likely to get much game time in the near future unless injuries occur.

Jimmy Sørheim
42 Posted 22/08/2012 at 13:16:01
I really hope we see Neville out of the team, Mirallas might not start but Naismith should start on the right. We lack quality on the right, everyone can see that, but still Moyes keeps putting Osman there, and Osman can not play in that position. He is a central midfielder, an offensive midffielder, but in no way is he a right winger.

How come Naismith did not start? Maybe because Moyes was being defensive. Against Villa we need to have Naismith there, Mirallas is not quite settled yet, but Naismith is. I will be very sad if Osman starts as a right winger against Villa.

Sometimes it seems like Moyes wants to hold on and never let go of past performers, keeping in mind Osman did well while playing in the middle for us, not as a right midfielder.

I hope Mirallas will be ready to play against Villa because we need all the options we can get. Coleman or Osman does not do the job, at least not as a right winger.

Jim Knightley
43 Posted 22/08/2012 at 13:44:38
Bit different though isn't it Nick? Coleman played right back for Blackpool as well, should we not count that spell either? Do you not think that Coleman has played right mid for us, because we've lacked a natural right sided midfielder for some time?

Or is Anichebe a right mid as well now, because he has played there a few times?

I expect Mirallas will begin on the bench. Unfortunately for us, he has missed pre-season, so hasn't got to know the squad or uses to the team. As Sam said, Leyton Orient is the likely first start, as the game will be played at a lower tempo etc. Luckily we have a great start to the season, so should be able to ease him in well.

I'll be very surprised if it is the same team Sam. At the age Distin and Neville are it would be miraculous (and probably a bit stupid) for them to be playing Monday Saturday for 90 minutes each. I'd like to see Osman come infield and one of Naismith or Mirallas take that RW role. heitinga should slot in the back in space of Distin.

In hindsight Moyes had his team set up perfectly for Man U. Distin's pace was needed at the back for when their attackers got in behind whilst at times we did have mass defense up and Neville with his positional discipline was important in this. Fellaini up top gave us an outlet and we could play off him. Villa will be different as we will have lots more of the ball.

Nick Entwistle
45 Posted 22/08/2012 at 15:10:49
Jim, Moyes has never played him there which renders some supporters' wishes for Coleman in that position redundant... though yes, you were only pointing out your favourable position for him, even if it is rarely utilised in modern football or at all with Moyes.

Maybe its when people have a go at Moyes for the number of defenders playing in midfield it rankles they include the Irishman.

As long as Moyes is here and wingbacks stay in the 90s that's all we can view him as. An old fashioned (and natural) wing man... who hopefully gets his form back!
