Round looking for more signings

Assistant manager doesn't anticipate any departures

Everton Assistant Manager, Steve Round, says that David Moyes is still hopeful of doing more business before the transfer deadline on Friday night. Moyes has made no secret of the fact he wants more strength in depth and it's for that reason that no further departures are expected.

Knowledge of Moyes's desire to add to his squad before the end of the transfer window has, of course, kept the media busy linking the Blues with all manner of targets.

Michael Owen is frequently mentioned despite sources closer to Goodison suggesting that there has been no contact with the ex-Liverpool and Manchester United striker — and even if there had been, Owen's wage demands would surely scupper any move.

Meanwhile, the link with Charlie Adam surfaced again yesterday afternoon but, again, the word on Merseyside continues to be that Everton are not interested in the hot-headed midfielder, particularly at Liverpools' apparent £5m asking price.

Round was cautious not to reveal any targets, but Moyes's right-hand man has confirmed the club still want to add to their squad.

"We would very much like to, yes," he said at a press conference ahead of Wednesday's Capital One Cup game against Leyton Orient.

"We are a couple short and a bit thin on the ground. That is the job for the manager and the chairman.

"It's not easy at this stage and if we do, great. If we don't then we are still very happy with the squad we have got and the team we are putting out."

Everton's great start to the season has inevitably garnered attention for the Blues' more coveted assets like Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jagielka but Round said: "There are only a few days to go (in the transfer window) and I don't think there will be anyone leaving now, that's for sure."

One player who won't be coming to Goodison after all is M'Baye Niang. The French teenager opted for a move to AC Milan instead of Everton after meeting with the Italian club's vice president yesterday and Caen agreed to sell the 17 year-old for a fee that could rise to £3m.

Danny sturidge for me. Screw the rs ovet, surely he would want to play for a team at the right end of the table!

Chicarito on loan or maybe an offer of around 6 mill? Would be a perfect foil for Jella. I would definitely take Sturidge too. I can't see us getting Sinclair though. Expect Arsenal or Spurs to get involved there.

Charlie Mulgrew if it was possible.. Can play across the back line and in midfield.. Set piece taker.. And also a threat in the air, coming in to his prime years. Only a matter of time before some one brings him to the premiership, so why not us. £5m could do!
Mark Lennon

Dont think anyone would want to leave.
Realy excited about whats happenin at the moment. Although we missed out on niang, the intent was ther.
Just to be competing with milan for players is a step forward. Just hope the next few days keep my confidence as high as it is now!

If you watch the whole interview on the O.S he also says that the reason he is doing the presser is because Moyes was with Bill K trying to get more players in. He also said no to Michael Owen.

We'd never come clost to affording berbatovs wages and he'll likely want to play in the CL anyway. Can see him ending up in russia.

Still curious as to what round actually does...

If you believe the drivel that comes from Twitter then Rooney wants to join on loan this season.
James Martin
16 Posted 28/08/2012 at 19:34:18
Probably what every other assistant manager/first team coach is doing in the country Denis. Just because he's associated with Everton and used to be a defender doesn't automatically mean he's terrible at his job. It seems to be some sort of amusing games that football fans play where they hate the assistant manager for no reason. The Man U fans were at it the other night about Phelan despite him presiding over a remarkably successful era. The team's playing well at the moment but I'm sure that can't possibly have anything to do with Round....

Hi all, this is a beaut that my son of 15 has just enlightened me with. We've all heard some rumours that frankly just make you laugh and this is one of them - he reckons that a football agent (un-named) has tweeted that Rooney has fallen out with Fergie over the signing of Van Persie and has demanded a loan to Everton to re-pay the Evertonians! It made me chuckle anyway!

Good shout Niall, Berbatov would do it for me, but can we afford him?

Indeed Chicarito would be interesting, provided he used a less annoying name!
Bobby Thomas
20 Posted 28/08/2012 at 19:27:59
Berbatov is 31, massive wages, ego, not the hardest worker, he plays walking football.......yeah that looks a goer, just what Moyes goes for. Look at the work Jelavic gets through and the threat he is in behind. We need that graft.

Berbatov was first choice in his 2nd season and knocked in plenty at home. Some of the away performances I saw were a joke and after one too many 90 minutes of shoulder shrugging anonymity and giving the team nothing, Ferguson fucked him off not long after the turn of the year that season for Chicarito.

I think it culminated in him not making the bench for the champions league final, which is basically saying your finished.

Hes about as far away from how we go about things as your gonna get, would never happen.

Supposed to be Fiorentina bound on a 2 year deal anyway according to the Independant.

OK Bobby, all good and well, it was always going to be a long shot anyway, to be honest I would like to see cover for Bainesy as first priority, and a striker if there was still some of the Rodwell money left.
One thing that is going to be interesting this season is if our young prodigys, Barkley, Junior, Duffy and co get used at all.
Mike Corcoran

At least we're not linked with N'Zogbia this summer, I would like Sinclair, and sturridge on loan please. I don't think the top clubs here will loan to us though as we are going to be a threat to them this year!

Bobby Thomas
27 Posted 28/08/2012 at 20:39:24
Tony, I think we need a deep lying mid as we play 2 holding alot and definitely cover up top.

On Baines sit, im never quite sure we have cover or not. Suppose Sylvain is immediate, then Phil Neville, but we can only ask him to play so much football, hes 34 does alot of mid and right back as it is. He gets such a hard time, if he was ever injured we would feel it a lot.

But that cover doesnt exactly get me buzzin!!! In terms of having a player who can cover Baines, that joining on attacking player, we do have nothing. And the way we play with deep mids and narrow mids the overlapping is very important.

If Baines was out I suppose we would have to find another way to play and win, which is what managing is all about in the end. We would be much less cohesive as Baines is a ridiculously good attacking outlet.

On right back, only Moyes knows if he thinks Coleman has a chance. And if theres one thing he knows, its a defender. If not, we need a young full back in reasonably soon.

Can't see Fergy lifting a pinkie to help us this season.
Drew O'Neall
29 Posted 28/08/2012 at 21:05:35
Why wouldn't Fergie help us out? They've already played us and their competition have to play us twice. There are 3 or 4 teams who can realistically take points from City and we're one of them.

Bobby - I'm with you, I'd like to see a DM/AM type player, someone like Fernandes or Banega who we have been linked with in the past but do't see either of those coming off, not on our budget anyway.. What's Riquelme up to these days?

Kev Johnson

I think this season we look to have finally moved away from an over-reliance on Baines. Pienaar is drifting inside and Baines is playing simpler stuff rather than knowing the whole team is relying on him. Don't get me wrong, he can still be an effective outlet (Jelavić's goal) but he's not quite as imperative as last year.

Against Orient I'd be happy to see Garbutt, Jags, Jonny and Nev at the back. Garbutt is like Baines used to be. Can't defend but has a cracking cross. He is the perfect understudy.

And did I honestly just read 'Kevin Davies'??? Jesus

Drew, lovely stuff.

So, we can fuck Round off and get Riquelme in as assistant!

Can you imagine that? Playing out from the back, Ossie trying Cruyff turns on the edge of his own box.

Moyes would dig him within a week.

42 Posted 28/08/2012 at 21:34:42
Victor, I think the blues should hope to be pushing one out of the top four, and that will be worrying the sky 5, so united, city, Chelsea et al will be loaning to the strugglers where they get plenty of game time and where they may help nick the odd point from their rivals but won,t be sniffing round the top 6 as a result.

I put talksport on to see what the transfer news was on the way home tonight. The guy was saying Rooney resembled a 32-year-old rather than his real age, and that he needed to put some performances and soon otherwise he'd been bounced out of Man Utd and his career was in decline etc.

Didn't he score 26 goals last season, and were they not 30 seconds from winning the league with a midfield that resembled Cocoon?

Conor Skelly

There is money...or we wouldn't have agreed a 2million deal for niang Re. Players...there is no way sturridge is leaving, unless chelski have signed a striker I don't know about. Yossi or essien on loan would be more likely. Hernandez would be a dream but I doubt a loan deal very much...anderson has been muted in the papers as someone who could be available. Id love to see Phillips or ince come in or even Ramsay on loan. I really don't want Doyle and preferably not Owen Really could do with a cm though, as we are not sure if junior is able to step up
Kev Johnson
52 Posted 28/08/2012 at 22:22:57
Moyes was talking pre-season about loaning out Barkely to get him some game time. He seems matey with Holloway at Blackpool and the Coleman loan turned out well for both sides, so I can imagine him going there. (Handy for a young lad to be loaned out to another North West team too.) Therefore, I can see Matt Phillips coming to us in a mutually beneficial backscratching type thingy.

All will be revealed on Friday night by that twat on sky sports Jim White jumping around the studio like a cross between Jim'll fix it and the guy from the BBC on election night with his swing o meter. Expect Jim in his finest glaswegian drawl to be accompanied by an equally iritating tangoed female in a tight dress waxing lyrical about Michael Owen being spotted arriving at Finch Farm via helicopter. Jim will hardly be able to contain himself when Hawwy Redknapp gets on the phone and announces that he has just returned from taking buster for a shit at Spurs training ground and can categorically state that Defoe is deffo not leaving Spurs, but you never know Jim in this business he's just seen Kaka in the back of Levy's cortina.

BREAKING NEWS... According to the official site, we have sold all of our current squad and bought all of the players mentioned on this thread!

The first team will line up in an unusual 2-4-4 formation:

Mulgrew / Ward
M Phillips / Holtby / Adam / Sinclair
Owen / Doyle / Sturridge / Rooney

While the reserve team is dispensing with defenders altogether and going for an attack minded 6-4 formation:

Berbatov / Henandez / K Davies / Russell
Arshavin / J Cole / Ince / Banega / Ramsey / Zaha

I know, I know, it's unusual - no goalkeepers!

Holtby would be great. I think deep lying midfield is a position we need to strengthen and Charlie Adam is similar to Gibson both in attributes and the fact that his stock is low right now. If we could get him for a few mill I wouldn't mind too much. Would prefer someone else though if possible.

I reckon we will sign one loan player at least who no-one saw coming.

Spurs and city will be spending cash in the next few days for sure.

Agreed Sam I would have liked to have seen Huddlestone brought in as cover for Gibson. Not sure what a player like him is doing going to Stoke.

Ciaran, I'm using most rags actually. Pretty much all the major papers ran the story either a few days ago, or after Milan agreed a fee in which they referred to our deal as the catalyst for another Milan offer. Sky Sports News and its site also ran it, as did ESPN. Might not be true, but based on who ran it (I generally find the stuff Sky Sports News put on air, the best source save for the BBC) imo, it is true. I also think we will sign at least one player before the window shuts.

Drew (860) - "Why wouldn't Fergie help us out? They've already played us and their competition have to play us twice. There are 3 or 4 teams who can realistically take points from City and we're one of them".

So all we'll be this season is that mid-table perennial helping ManU win the EPL? You're thinking a lot smaller than I about where we're going this season.

God, no Owen please... or Doyle... or Charlie Adam. We have better midfielders already... and a waste of £5 or 6 mil. Let's spend the Rodwell money wisely. I'm not sure... why not Dawson, Shawcross, Sturridge... even a cheeky try for Bent with players going the other way?
Kev Johnson
84 Posted 29/08/2012 at 17:17:53
Ignore Steve 'Pointless' Round - what Moyes actually said is that we need a few "new faces". That might just mean cosmetic surgery for two or three of the current squad.

Heitinga, Neville, Barkely, Gibson and Fellaini are thought to be among the early front runners for facial reconstruction...

Round said that we weren't interested in Owen because that area wasn't a priority; so no strikers!

I think he's happy with the defence, with Garbutt coming on tonight and Johnny H not getting in our Prem side at the moment.

We seem to have a lot of options on the wings all of a sudden, with Gueye kicking on and Naismith, Pienaar and Mirallas all coming in this year.

So my guess is a central midfielder and maybe another keeper.

Holtby, please!
