Oviedo announced as latest signing

Matthew Kennedy deal announced
Everton have confirmed the acquisitions of Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen for an undisclosed fee, believed to be 1.6m, and Matthew Kennedy from Kilmarnock.

And there was potential late drama when hot rumours suggested the Blues were trying to land 6m-rated Belgian midfielder, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe but the Club appear to have been beaten by the clock. The announcement of a loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent is still possible, though.

Oviedo underwent a medical at Finch Farm and put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Goodison Park, while 17 year-old Kennedy signs on for three years.

Sky Sports had prematurely reported that the Oviedo deal was done two hours early, prompting an official Tweet from the Club saying, "We will keep everybody posted and update as soon as the transfer is completed."

The evening's out-of-the-blue story came from Sky Sports, though, who reported that the Blues were in talks with Birmingham City regarding England U21 goalkeeper, Jack Butland but the asking price seems to have ended any interest there.

That speculation was being dismissed by talkSPORT and ITV Sport presenter Steve Matterface at the time.

Rumours of a move for Steven N'Zonzi remained strong with the suggestion being that David Moyes met with the player and his agent yesterday afternoon and the prospect of Everton hammering out as deal might have increased by their failure to land Michael Essien.

The Ghanaian could be set for Real Madrid as Sky report the Spaniards are in "advanced talks" with Chelsea.

One decent midfielder will do for me. COYB!

Same here Matthew, I still have difficulties wondering why some Evertonians would consider the signing of Adams as controversial. Every player we have signed from Liverpool has been a success and the lad was great for Blackpool.

Gareth, the fact that we have better players here and on lower wages (probably), means that signing him will be a step backwards. He offers nothing that we don't already have. He was good at Blackpool because they were poor and he was the best of a bad bunch.

We are currently better than Liverpool. We don't want or need their cast offs.

Unless a player from Liverpool can walk into our first team, I'd rather he sits on their wage bill than ours.
Gareth Fieldstead
7 Posted 31/08/2012 at 08:03:57
I am not suggesting he would start for us if all our current first team are fit but if there was injuries to the likes of Fellaini or Gibson then I think he would provide decent back up. I agree Chris wages could be a problem, little harsh on Blackpool though!
Derek Thomas

I hear he has done his knee ligaments in so won't be going anywhere. Before his Derby antics I wouldn't've minded him, but he's shown his true colours. He confirms the shite in RS, what you get is exactly what it says on the tin. Not our sort of chap at all.

Gareth don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Blackpool in the PL but they were a bad team. Yes they played gung-ho and went for the win bur they inevitably lost!!

Having a player like Adam, Owen, etc as back-up with wage demands like there's seems pointless unless they are first team players.

I agree with Gareth. Think Adam would offer something in an area we are short in.

Guess the Holtby link has died but that would be amazing. Not sure bout N'Zonzi and I've never seen Oviedo.

There's always one name that comes out of left field....

Couldn't see Dempsey coming to us Stuart, because Moyes couldn't gaurantee him to be in the starting eleven every week, and Dempsey is far too good to be a bench warmer.

It's transfer deadline day people!!!!!!!!

Matthew Salem
20 Posted 31/08/2012 at 09:22:16
Aside from Anichebe, I can't think of any player that I would I not feel disappointed to lose. Our squad, even with its lack of depth, is a force to be reckoned with. I hope Baines, Fellaini, Heitinga and Co do not get tempted to jump ship on transfer deadline day, but realize that we can beat anybody in this league. An additional quality midfielder is (in my view) all that we really could still use since we have the dosh lying around right now...
Trevor Lynes
21 Posted 31/08/2012 at 09:23:40
I would prefer Spearing to Adams, he is much more mobile and committed and lots younger to boot!

The best buy so far as far as bargains go is Dembele from Fulham for 15 mill. Rodders fetched about the same amount and he is far from the finished article. Dembele was great all last season and is a new Viera.

I hope we don't just dabble in Scotland. Although Oviedo looks over priced at 5 million. I reckon Bosingwa was a better bet on loan.

John Ford
22 Posted 31/08/2012 at 09:22:12
Brian 491, that's true. (Also, I think he's 29 so wont want to be sit on his arse on a two-/three-year contract before he's too old to be useful.) Take the point further though I worry that Moyes will drag Owen in as cover. Owen would probably be hapy to warm the bench but I'd rather see us take a punt on an untried young-un as cover.

Bringing Owen in would just smell wrong, but I've got an awful feeling about this one.

John Ford

Chris... what's your source re Baines??
Jim Knightley
24 Posted 31/08/2012 at 09:32:21
The source is clearly bullshit Chris... Arsenal would have to match their transfer record for a 27-year-old left back... when they already have two left-backs and need a central midfielder, so that's utter fiction. Spurs, have a good left back, and a backup, and are targetting another mid or a striker. City are the most likely of the three, but have two left-backs, have less financial clout now, and need a central midfielder.

I really want two players in... but would be happy with one! I don't want to see Adam (although he is good, he is very dirty), Owen or Doyle. I do want to see N'Zonzi, Yossi, Ramsay, Hernandez, Sturridge, Essien, Anderson etc etc.

I'd like Oviedo, if we are paying 2.5million for him. 5mil seems far too much for someone who is unproven in a top league, and for whose position we already have some players. His prospective deal is the only concern for me, because it leads me to worry about Baines.

Chris Morris
25 Posted 31/08/2012 at 09:44:30
I agree the source is bonkers. The 2 European clubs are Bayern and Inter apparently. It's never out the question though because he's better than all their LB's, and if they have money they may try...

Fear not though, this guy told me yesterday that Andy Carroll wouldn't be leaving!!

Oviedo fee has been agreed.

Also, Villa have had a fee agreed for Dempsey...I never wanted him based on a 10M fee... but if it's nearer 5M, I'd be annoyed to see him go to Villa instead of us. He is the kind of player who could get us Champions League football.

I don't understand the Sturridge stories. Chelsea only have him and Torres as recognised strikers on the books, with Moses you could argue as a 3rd. Very dangerous to think you can head into 4 competitions with only that amount.

As for this Oviedo, part of me is glad we are finally looking for decent cover for Baines, however, there's that niggling Evertonian thought that it could be to replace Baines as we must have gone the last 2 or 3 seasons with no cover, why get it now?

Jon Ferguson
33 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:36:43
I should be excited that we are spending money and bulking the squad, I just feel that Garbutt is a player to be developed and he now has 2x internationals in front of him. It must be disparaging after making your debut. If we do bring in N'Zonzi as well, then Garbutt and Barkley need to go on loan to the Championship. Sheff Wednesday are a great club, I'd like to see them both go there (Barkley has already been linked).
Jim Knightley
34 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:43:29
Dan, the implication is that Chelsea are buying another striker...most likely Schurrle. So I expect the Sturridge deal will only happen if Schurrle arrives. However, only 2 senior strikers, also seems a massive risk. I can only imagine that they see one of the attacking mids having the ability to play up top.
Joseph Plant
35 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:37:29
Jim - Dempsey isn't the man to get us into Champions League! Are you suggesting he'd be better than Fellaini off the striker? If we need anyone, it's another CM. I really hope this Essien deal isn't dead/bollocks. Pienaar, Gibson, Essien, Fellaini, Naysmith... that's a Champions League midfield.

Kane Dennison
36 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:45:34
Yea Hazard can play upfront, he played there the second half of last season sometimes.

I think 5M for Oviedo with 1 year left on his contract is terrible business, Newcastle got Anita from Ajax for 4M I think it was and he had 2 years left. He can play left back and midfield... but if it is less, say 3M, I would not mind so much.
Dan McKie
37 Posted 31/08/2012 at 10:59:00
I'd like to see Barkley go to Blackpool where he would have the freedom to attack, but any Championship club would do. He needs a solid run of 15-20 games so we can really see how good he is/could be.

Oviedo works as cover. Would not be surprised if he gets a run at RB too. Hopefully it's for the 2m and not 5!

Would like to see a DM/CM to cover Gibson.

Agree with those saying the likes of Barkley and garbutt should get championship loans. Best way for them to improve and us to see how effective they really are as first team players.

If Moyes was thinking of letting Baines go, why did he take him off at half time on Wednesday? If he was on his bike you'd leave him out altogether wouldn't you?

I haven't seen any of this Oviedo but is there any chance he could be a Philip Lahm type player i.e. comfortable on both sides. Is he our new RB?

Gary Mortimer
40 Posted 31/08/2012 at 11:34:43
Dan(529) I think Moyes has said that he'd let Barkley go on loan to get some experience as soon as the transfer deadline is over.

I hope Oviedo is only cover for Baines (or Hibbert). I can't see Baines going too far - he gets homesick with England - so the rumours about foreign clubs don't seem likely. No doubt someone will start a 'he's signing for the Liverpool' just to see the panic.

Dempsey has just turned down Villa, as he wants to join the Liverpool - just hope they pay well over the odds for him. He looks a good pro, but I don't think he is a player any of the 'Big' clubs would ever go for - further proof of how far Liverpool have fallen down the pecking order and have squandered the Alonso and Torres money on average players.

Dan McKie
41 Posted 31/08/2012 at 11:41:37
Arteta wasn't left out before he was on his bike, Phil. I think this Oviedo has been bought in mind that he can play left back and left midfield, which may come in handy when Pienaar goes to the African Nations Cup, but we do need to bolster the squad and not every player who comes in has to go straight into the first 11. It's about competition and being able to rest players, like the Leyton Orient game; I wasn't happy seeing Baines play.
Chris Morris
42 Posted 31/08/2012 at 11:40:53

I love Deadline Day nonsense!

Phil Sammon
43 Posted 31/08/2012 at 11:54:02
Those agents are bollocks. I can't believe any notice is taken of them.

Dan - No, you're right about Arteta but I honestly think Moyes was fed up of him. He had quality but he was painfully ineffective. Although we seem less reliant on Baines this year, he's still a vital part of our team. Along with Fellaini and Jelavić I think he's the player Moyes knows he has to keep. And importantly, the lad's happy Arteta wasn't.

Sam Hoare
44 Posted 31/08/2012 at 12:03:26
I would be surprised if Baines leaves. Not sure who needs him to be honest and we wouldn't sell for less than 15M.

Fingers crossed about Holtby. He would be up there with Mirallas as top signing of the window. He could play next to Gibson and would really improve us!

Have all the charges against Pienaar been dropped, or have people just forgotten we may lose him before the ACoN (even if it it just to go through the ordeal of a trial and then get his head together after being found not guilty).

Not good to think about, but it does make the Oviedo deal make a lot more sense without worrying that Bainesy is going to be sold.

Would love another pacy attacking player for options on the right, but Oviedo and a CM would keep me happy (would have settled for a lot less a couple of weeks ago but the recent performances have got me clamouring for more).

Think Dempsey may have picked the wrong option, since the RS are after Sturridge. Could they possibly take both and keep them happy?

Just on SSN that we have agreed a deal for Kennedy from Kilmarnock.

48 Posted 31/08/2012 at 13:53:49
A very very key juncture for our football club...

The way it is shaping up, if you look at the team sheet of 4-4-2 (let's be positive for once), we seem only to really lack in midfield creatively from a backup perspective and similarly for a 3rd striker of quality. (In other words, we potentially might lack during the season two players; one more play maker of sorts and someone more certain of bagging goals than Anichebe). Defensive cover can be cobbled together by its very nature using the squad more easily than putting true quality up front when we are pushing for Champions League:

Howard

Baines, Oviedo *
Heitinga
Jagielka
Distin, Hibbert

Pienaar, Osman
Fellaini
Gibson, Barkley
Neville, Coleman

Jelavic , Anichebe
Mirallas

We should NOT loan out Barkley to see if he is any good. He is good; we know this. We never loaned out Rooney. Barkley can cut it and we should be looking to get double-figure starts from him this season, even if he tires later in the season.

If current form continues, the pressure will mount on Bill come Christmas to find Moyes another 10M to bolster and really go for it. In other words, if like in 2004-05, we are second by Christmas, we shouldn't decide to just 'tighten belts and hope we end up 4th in 5 months time'. What we should do is say 'we are deservedly in 2nd (if that situation arises) and look to try for that spot or at worst 3rd.

Then an investor might sit up and go, "If this manager stays put, then this might be an investment worth making." Fergie leaves Man Utd in 2 years, Bill needs to get busy. My honest instinct is that Moyes would prefer to stay at a successful Everton than go to a United (a poisoned chalice where one cup might be seen as poor etc etc). I feel that Moyes wants to stay, he just wants to reconcile that want with a fair chance to fulfill his potential. Fair enough, over to you Bill. Being canny has got us this far. We just need to gamble a tad now, not recklessly, but just stick our necks out a little.

Our first eleven is currently in the top 3-4 first elevens in the country, just on paper alone... It's been a while since I could write that! Add in our side's cohesion, attitude and current spirit, we can totally finish 3rd of 4th. Whether we will depends on loads of other things (injuries, being knackered after cup ties etc etc). Never felt more smug about our position compared to Liverpool's for years.

This is our best run of form under Moyes and our best summer business in years. I really hope those at the helm realise our current position of strength and turn the screw.

I bet Rooney would love a run in our shirt right now if United's era starts to fade...

COYB

Jimmy, that could simply mean there is no pressure from the banks to sell. However, if Citeh for instance came in with a 25M+ bid for one of our top players and offered to treble his wages, I think we would be struggling to keep hold of the player. (You wouldn't blame the player either.)

Mancini still seems hungry form busines, and wenger and SAF have both been worryingly quiet on deadline day.

Hope no-one leaves but we still have half a day to go.

Why can we not finally offload Anichebe, weren't Wigan after him? Moyes seems to see something in him but it's invisible to me, and has been invisible for the last 5 years since whenever he made his debut!

Denis Richardson
51 Posted 31/08/2012 at 14:00:20
just to add, if citeh get Maicon, could we make a cheeky bid for Micah Richards? Would be a great signing for us down the right as well as a proper cover for CB, as opposed to make shift from hibbo or neville.

Thinking logically, cover is needed for Pienaar; Oviedo may be bought to fill that gap and form a partnership with Baines. He can also cover left back if Baines is injured. Every top club nowadays need adequate cover for every position and flexibility is required for new comers.

Also, Neville and Distin cannot last forever and utility backup is needed for them. I reckon we are a bit short of a goalkeeper (Ruddy should have been kept).

I hope that Mirallas can solve the wide right position and can provide goals to supplement Jelavic's projected haul.

At last we seem to have really good attacking options and this season could see us emerge like a 'phoenix' from the ashes to challenge the top four. It will be great for us to really play top football against all opposing teams and not just rely on spoiling tactics when we play the top sides.

I'm really optimistic for the first time in years.

That 5 million rumor was crap to begin with. Have no idea how they came up with that. Sometimes I think they just pull these numbers out of their arse.

1.6 million is about right considering his age, experience, skill, and time left on contract. His defense looks a little shaky but his crossing is brilliant. Looks pretty good dribbling as well. Maybe Bainsey-light.

6mil, cripes, that's a lot for a birmingham reserve. He's a monster though, 6'5" according to wiki. Apparently they turned down a 6mil offer from southhampton so I doubt it's a runner. Also says he wants first team football but I doubt he'd get it here for another few years unless Howard completely falls apart
Scott Goin
72 Posted 31/08/2012 at 20:06:09
I liked the look of Butland in the Olympics and he's probably worth 6 mill but that's a lot of money for a guy who likely wouldn't play a meaningful match for us all year. Howard just signed a 4-year contract 6 months ago and he isn't too old at 33.

I'm sure he'll be really good in a few years but I just don't see that a backup goalkeeper helps us out right now.

I think butland is one of the best young prospects in English football, and probaly aside from oxlade, the biggest english teenage prospect. The only issue is whether we can afford as a club to invest so much when we have Howard? If we get him though, I will be happy, I just really think we need another cm. Saying that..who in the their wildest dreams imagined this? We've signed four seniors this summer...and we've won our first three matches. And now we are being linked with the goalkeeper everyone wants. Dream land. And Liverpool are currently empty handed...santa does listen.

Anybody know who Yoan Gouffran is? Apparently he's on his way to Paris to have a medical for us.

He's allergic to grass, but luckily not to scoring goals from the wing.

Paul Roderick, how can you say Howard is the weakest link in the starting 11? He has saved us so many times over the last few seasons. Our weakest link is Hibbert, and apart from the ageing Neville, if Moyes doesn't fancy Coleman there, we have no real strength there. Hibbert is currently injured so it will be interesting to see how we go. This side is probably the strongest since DM took over so I hope we manage to win a trophy this season. The league cup would put the manager in the record books as the first to win this trophy: how we've never won it before is beyond me but any trophy would mean a success and the strong side against Leyton Orient leads me to believe our usually cautious boss is going for it.....at last. Roll on the derby

Seriously guys. Moyes is the wheeler dealer of the century. I can't believe how legit our team is after one sale for 12 million. And Liverpool didn't do a damn thing. Amazing. Now we just got to go out and prove we are indeed a top 4 team. Let's go!!!!

Mick, I think Howard has cost us more than he has saved us. I also think Hibbert is a very solid, dependable defender - who also gets unfairly criticized for his distribution - which is actually better than others I could mention.

Paul

That's a ridiculous comment on Howard mate.

Oh Bumfluff! Steven N'Zonzi is off to the mighty Stoke! Would have been a great bench warmer for us! Oh well! Let's all laugh at those across the park for pulling an absolute clanger of a transfer window! xD

Great. Baines and Fellani stay, good business done

Perfect window. Naismith, Pienaar, Mirallas and Oviedo in, Cahill and Rodwell out and the bankers happy. More importantly our top players have seen the teams potential and decided to stay. I did get a bit over excited when I heard the Essien rumour, but we can still go in for other loans to cover in midfield. I'm glad all the signings were quality and well thought out and there were no signings just to make up the numbers (N'Zonzi / Adam), or panic buys (ala Bilyaletdinov).

Hibbert is not in the same mould as Baines, but he is a solid defender, totally committed and has great tackling ability. I think his forward play and crossing has improved over the past few years too. Certainly not a weak link. As for the crap about Tim Howard, yes he makes the odd mistake, but show me a keeper who doesn't. He is certainly one of the best in the league and rules his defence with his forceful personality. We certainly wouldn't find a better keeper without paying out double figures and massive wages, not unless we have CL football as an incentive. Perhaps next summer ;)
