Anichebe glad to play and learn

, 19 September, 15comments  |  Jump to most recent
Victor Anichebe says he's pleased with the way he took his goal against Newcastle and is keen to learn from fellow players like Jelavic and Mirallas but he'd have been happier with a win.

“I am always happy just to be on the pitch as I've had some injuries in my time.

“It is nice for me to learn off Niki as he plays as that lone striker and he's a great player.

“He plays between the centre-halves and that's what I'm trying to do more instead of dropping off.

“Kevin had some good cameo runs and he is one of those players who always wants to do something on the ball. He is a really good player and we now have great options.

“It is always nice to play and watch these kind of players as I am still learning.

“I've been working on that kind of turn and shot (for his goal) so I was happy with that but I'd have been happier with a win.”

I thought that he played really well when he came on. Nice to hear a young player still recognising he has good players to learn from, and doesnt seem to think he is the finished article. I feel a bit sorry for the lad seems like some of our fans have given up on him, I think some of the bad feeling started with an article saying he had turned down a contract worth £50,000 per week. This has since been rubbished by player and club, funny how certain players are treated differently from home grown players.

David Moyes is no fool and despite reservations from some of our fans he can see that this boy can become a player for us. Obviously we have a couple of players that are ahead of him, and he readilly accepts that but I think he is a good option to come of the bench. So I would hope that he gets as much backing from the fans as some of our other players. Dont know why but some of our fans never seem to have as much patience with boys that have come through the youth programme as purchased players.

I think you are on to something, the story that Anichebe turned down £30k a week rightly made a lot of fans angry. This guy has limited talent and still has a long way to go before he can become a good enough striker.

After he signed, the feeling was it was a waste of money, to give him a long term contract. That feeling is going to stay unless Anichebe gives us more goals like the one against Newcastle.

Anichebe has a bad habit of falling down too much, complain and whine while he is down on the ground. If he can learn to stand on his feet and use his strength better then he will have a chance.

I liked his goal vs Newcastle and hopefully we can see more goals from Anichebe.

£50k a week? If Big Vic is on more than £30k I'd be amazed. Which is amazing in it self.

He reminds me of this striker I had in my PC football manager days. Promising at 15, and as part of the furniture just had him hanging around getting about 1 game every 2 years but always scored off the bench. Total pants, but he still scored when required. Retired old and wealthy with about 10 appearances to his name.

Edward Elgar - Variations on an Original Theme Op. 36 - Enigma

Anichebe, to me, is an 'Enigma'

Enigma = a person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling or ambiguous

For Op.read Opus .

Opus = an artistic composition or musical work.

Now the nearest I can place the big fella to an artistic composition is to a work in progress so I guess he's more likely to be an 'Unfinished Symphony' or dare I say a 'Lost Chord'

Let's hope he's not a lost cause!!

I have been enjoying this site for a while... however, I have noticed a lot of Moyes, and Everton player knockers who just can not see how entertaining and good we are as a team. Some are also quick to give big Vic stick, but the guy was young and learning. He seems to have got rid of the complaining spirit and the last game showed it for me.

When his goal was not given he just thought "Right, I will get another" and that he did. He is enjoying being part of a top team now and happy to be second to Jel so lets just get off his back and give him the support he deserves.

Two goals, one valid the other a ghost goal. If any other player came off the bench and contributed to such an extent I guess that he would be lauded in most quarters.

Anichebe appears to have become a bit of a PR disaster due to his previous issues with sulking and his ill-fated attempt to get a transfer out to Hull. I reckon he deserves to be given a clean slate from the fans, hopefully with a bit of maturity and continuing to show that he has desire and enthusiasm to learn the game he will continue to contribute for Everton.

I agree Peter.

He's a good option off the bench and is improving albeit gradually.

His ability to roll a defender and turn and shoot has been there from that first goal against WBA at Goodison ( Ferguson's last game and the botched penalty that he scored off the rebound to avoid becoming the only Everton No.9 to go a whole season without scoring! ). In that respect he is reminiscent of Kevin Campbell.

People seem to forget he suffered over a year out after that horror tackle by that turd, Nolan.

He's not perfect, but as supporters some of us should encourage more than we do.

In case my post above is misunderstood, it was the 'legend' Ferguson who so nearly went a whole season not scoring in 2005-06, not Victor!

You cant knock Anichebe for the impact he is making at the moment especially off the bench but for a lot of fans there has to be a boo boy and quite often it is the local lads who get it in the neck.

If you look at his stats for 2012 you would struggle to ask for more from a 3rd choice striker

Let me get this right. Because Anichebe had a decent 45 mins we're suppose to forget about the previous shit 100 appearances? Out of interest how old does a player have to be before the words 'young' and 'potential' stop getting used? FFS he's 24, if he's only sowing ability in very small dose's its because thats all he's capable of.

Well now we hear Jelavic is out for Saturday how many of you who claim he had a good game the other night want him to start on Saturday? I tpersonally thought he never played good enough the other night, as did every other lad I spoke to and sitting by me and in the car on the way home and the thought of him starting Satirday does not fill me with any confidence, his movement and hold up play where none existent.
Mirralas should start up front and bring Naismith in.
Anivhebe has proved a good sub for the last 15 mins but for a start no chance.

Karl, Anichebe went through a season where he was outscored by Tim Howard and Phil Neville, you can use stats any well you like to bend a point but the majority of Anichebe's career he has been utterly shite.

The first time I saw Victor play in the flesh was about six years ago and he struck me as a big lad, who had little pace and even less skill.

I think I could see the potential that the club thought he had, he would obviously bulk out and become a real handful, and if they could add skill and technique with experience to obvious potential power he could be a real asset. I thought about it for a few seconds, looked at him again and thought “no, not for me…”

In my opinion Victor has bulked out but the skill, technique and power hasn’t grown with him, he’s just bigger, slower and continues to frustrate. The only game I really remember seeing what he was capable of was when he terrorised someone down the left wing (was it Villa…. or Fiorentina…..? I can’t remember). He was fantastic, and if we saw that kind of thing regularly I’d think he was great. But we don’t.

I don’t take any satisfaction in saying it, I’m not bashing him and I know he’s had bad injuries but I just don’t think he’s good enough, or developed his game enough over the past six years to make the grade.

The real shame is given Moyes penchant for loaning players out I think Victor’s one who really would have benefitted, and may have come back as the player we hoped he would be. I’d happily let him go out on loan now, despite our thin squad, to get him off the wage bill and see how he got on at a club where he’d play every week.

He is, after all, our most used sub of all time now and as it stands, personally, I’ve seen enough. But then I think I had six years ago.

Karl Masters #735 here here, I totally agree. Having watched him a few times live I'm always surprised by his technique on the ball fro a big lad. Sure his shooting is not great and he probably needs to work on that, but his game is pretty good.

I think he is still young enough to learn and be a real player for us. At the moment he has got a few players in front of him, Naismith, Jelavic and Mirrallas.

BTW - where is Vellios??

He's a strange one, alright, Vic; coming off the bench, you always get the feeling he'll pop up with a goal — and he has on a few occasions.

But start with him and he seems to offer the team nothing at all. He broods he sulks and goes down like a small Scotch at the slightest contact... For a big lad, he can be a right Frankie Howard at times.

There's a player in there somewhere but maybe it'll take a move to bring it out. I really don't know... He's an enigma alright, Big Victor.

I think people do forget though that Moyes has shunted him around the front line like no-one's business: wide right, wide left, up top... no wonder he's got a permanent gob on him — wouldn't you?
