Leeds United vs Everton

They've probably forgotten what it's like after 10 successive home ties in all competitions but Everton are on the road this evening for a Capital One Cup away tie with Leeds United. Bidding for a place in the Fourth Round again, the Blues will be hoping to carry through the impressive attacking that destroyed Swansea and make short work of the Championship side.

The surprise news on the eve of this tie is that Nikica Jelavic has been passed fit, just a week after it was estimated that he could face as many as three weeks on the sidelines with shin injury he sustained against Newcastle United. With the swelling gone, the injury was clearly not as bad as first feared and the Croatian is available for selection.

Whether he is named in the starting XI at Elland Road is another question and it's likely that David Moyes will be looking to give him extra time to fully recover by naming him on the substitute's bench at the most.

Victor Anichebe, in goalscoring form and showing signs of finally fulfilling his potential, is a good bet to make his third successive start, with perhaps Steven Naismith also getting the nod in either a wide or forward role.

Junior's omission from the U21s side that beat Blackburn last night could be an indication that he will get his first competitive action in the senior side at some stage of the proceedings, Bryan Oviedo will also be hoping to see some more action after making a brief cameo at the Liberty Stadium at the weekend, and Sylvain Distin is in the contention after being rested in favour of John Heitinga.

Darron Gibson (knee) and Tony Hibbert (calf) are still out injured.

Leeds, managed by Neil Warnock, the manager who gave England international Phil Jagielka his break in the game, may have to do without captain Lee Peltier who is battling to overcome a knee injury of his own. David Norris and Phil Green are ruled out, though, for the side currently occupying 12th position in English football's second tier.

I would like to see Heitnga partner Distin at the back to see if that is a better fit than Heitinga /Jags I also think Oviedo should be given a run out at LB and we should retain Coleman at RB too. Upfront Mirralas and Vic should be played and Osman or Pienaar given a rest in favour of Naismith.

We should be very wary of Rudy Austin in their midfield. 6 feet tall Jamaican hard man. No real threat as a footballer but could do some damage to young midfielders like Junior if he plays.

I just heard lovable Neil Warnock on Sky Sports News referring to us as not one of the glamour clubs and whose players would equally be at home playing in the Championship!!!

I'd love to know what drugs he's been on... because the last time I looked we were riding high in the Premier League and, to my knowledge, have never played anywhere below the top flight since dinosaurs ruled the earth!

He must be mistaking us with a certain other club from the city. Unless the league table is upside-down even the anchor (yes, I said anchor) said I'm not sure I agree with that What an odious arrogant git! God, I hope we make him eat those words tonight.

From what i've seen of Junior, he can put it about a bit.

Might be what we need.

In years gone by I would have dreaded a tie like this. This season we are playing extremely good football and it would be a surprise to not get a result..........how things change!
Having said that, their fans will be up for it and we need to put them back in their box in the early stages, otherwise we may be in for a very tough night!

Warnock said that he's worried about Everton because we don't have any players that would consider it beneath them to play in the championship or for Leeds........I think he's kidding himself a bit there! I couldn't imagine anyone but PIp, Hibbo or Osman being happy playing for them.

Peter... why do you want Heitinga in the first team at the expense of Jags or Distin?

Distin is incredible and is a far faster player than Heitinga, better in the air and better tackler. Jags is a top centre back and I would not swap him for any other English player in the Premier League in his position. His blocks in the games against Newcastle and Swansea saved certain goals and he always puts 100% in every game.

Heitinga is smaller, slower and gives away fouls in dangerous areas. I have not seen any club show the slightest interest in signing him during the last transfer window. He is a good stand in if either of our proper centre backs is injured or loses form and he may replace Distin in the future, but Duffy may be a better replacement by then.

Heitinga is mediocre to my mind and does nothing special to make me think any different. If everyone is fit I see him on the bench.

Gonna be a cracking cup tie this. I think Distin might play in place of Jags, and we will need his height at times tonight. I think Naismith might play also, but I'm not expecting many changes other than those 2. Moyes knows this is his best chance of winning something. Potential banana skin this, but if we are on our game we should win comfortably.

Is it extra time and penalties or a return to Goodison should the scores end level?

Steve, I think Warnocks comment was meant as a positive. I took it as him saying we have no big time charlies in our team.

I would go with the following team:

Howard,
Neville, Duffy, Distin, Oviedo,
Coleman, Osman, Heitinga, Naismith,
Mirallas, Anichebe.

I would introduce Pienaar, Baines and Jelavic off the bench if required.

Just a comment regarding last Saturday, I thought if the ref was going to give a foul against Ashley Williams, he should have given a red card... but I was disappointed in some of the lads trying to get him to give a red card. I don't like it when players from other teams do this and we should be above that sort of thing.

Nick — extra time and penalties but there has to be a winner tonight.

Any oppotunity to have a bash at Neville, Osman and Hibbo, ey Steve.

Moyes should get the game won and then ring the changes — we've slipped up before against lower-league teams.

Phil Sammon,

Not at all! I always liked Osman and still do. Neville is useless as a player but I have a lot of respect for the man. Hibbert isn't good enough when measured against the rest of the squad but you can never criticise his commitment and hard work......... But I do think that they are the 3 players that wouldnt grummble about being at a championship club, given their age, style of play but mostly their attitude and personality.

Jamie, I understood it to be a positive aswell and I know what he was trying to say........but I think if you take his statement literally he was wrong

Baines isn't playing for sure, I have just seen him near Switch Island.

I remember being at Goodison the last time we played this lot in the League Cup back in 1991.

They infamously battered us 4-1 at home after we scored first and it turned out to be Kevin Ratcliffe's last game for the club and him getting destroyed playing at left back where he never looked comfortable.

Let's hope we are in for a different night tonight.

I'm suprised the game is still on. Do the FA consider the health and safety of fans travelling to the game? VERY SUPRISED?????????

Elland Road holds the best Everton moment on my life (so far) — watching the 1995 FA Cup Semi-Final against Spurs, a very much fancied spurs team too, with my dad.

We Evertonians had three stands to one Spurs stand, a great atmosphere, a great match, and a great comment afterwards by Joe Royle: "Sorry to ruin your dream final" (Man Utd v Spurs).

Tonight I just hope for a good result and good performance, maybe a bit more of Junior and Gueye plus a full 90 mins for Oviedo...

Due to my unconventional family, this game means almost as much to me as the derby. Half my family are Scouse, the other half Yorkshire.

My immediate family left Liverpool for West Yorkshire when I was a kid in the 80s so my Dad could move back to where his family lived and find work. From a young age, for most of my schooling, I was literally the only blue in a school full of Leeds fans at a time when, unfortunately, they were much better than us.

My Dad supports Leeds, my Uncles support Leeds, a lot of my mates support Leeds. Until the last couple of years before they were relegated, I had endless grief over the fact that by the time we left Liverpool I was a blue (I honestly think that, at 30 years old, my Dad still resents the fact that I'm not a Leeds fan).

Due to these factors it gives me great pleasure to say, after 8 long years, I can not wait to see us smash Dirty Leeds tonight!

Ste Traverse - 884

I remember being at that game also, sat in the Gwladys street about 5 rows central behind the goal.

Not that he wasn't but I honestly cannot remember Rats playing in that game?

I do however remember a certain up and coming midfielder who went on to play for us and one of my favourite premiership player, scoring a cracking header at the street end and thinking to myself, wow, what a player!

Don't remember the other Leeds scorers though?

Anyone else?

All credit to all (including Nev) who played Saturday in the 0-3 win.

Utmost peril for those who believe this will be an easy game. It wont. If it's well in the bag with 70 mins on the the clock then yes, play a few of the young ones or squad players. But get the game won first. It's the right that we have to develop. When we had LD on the right plus our usual threat down the left if was nigh on impossible for teams to contain us. Mirallas and Coleman? Anyway, whatever, lets just hope they go at it tonight with the same gusto and zeal of the last couple of games.

Lee Mason and his assistants were just standing behind me at Leeds Crowne Plaza reception. I was sorely tempted to tell him 'no dodgy decisions' tonight but thought that may well have gone against us...

Living in Leeds I would have gone to this game for sure tonight except I'm on holiday in Barcelona. Hope we absolutely stuff them tonight. Will be trying to 'accidentally' end up in a pub showing the game...

Warnock's comments were clearly meant as a positive for us. Sure if you read the comments you might think otherwise but that's why context is so important...Non story.

Regardless, he still looks like Mrs. Doubtfire to me

Simple question: Why doesn't Warnock have any eyebrows? He freaks me out. He should think about wearing eyebrow wigs. It would make him less horrifying to behold.

Ian (882) that was Liam Gallagher mate!
Sounds like Oviedo's in then, I reckon this kid's a gooden. It's only right to give others a chance. Would like to see Naismith in as well and Duffy too--- whatever the side is,i'd like to see us shove it right up Warnock! Metaphorically speaking of course. COYToffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!!!!

I'm afraid I would play Neville (what other option do we have), but surely he can't play 3 games in 8 days?

Howard
Coleman Heitina Distin Oveido
Mirallas Neville Fellaini Pienaar
Naismith
Anichebe

Fellaini in the middle for this game against dirty Leeds. Returning to attacking mid next league game.

Jon, how about Junior?

Aren't early cup rounds playing lower league opposition the best environment to give someone like Junior a chance to step up?

In any case, from what I saw of him pre-season he's a far better footballer than neville.

Peter Barry #809 I think your favourite manager is listening to you. Maybe your relentless goading has unnerved him. Not only attacking football but he's now taking your advice on team selection.
