Coleman to start against Germany

, 11 October, 41comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton's Seamus Coleman has been handed a starting berth at right back for Ireland by manager Giovanni Trappatoni for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier against Germany.

It will be the 24 year-old's first competitive start for his country after previous friendly outings, mostly in the right midfield slot in which he proved so successful in first couple of seasons with the Blues.

This season, David Moyes has used him in a more natural full-back role due to injuries to Tony Hibbert and Darron Gibson, the latter's absence necessitating Phil Neville's switch to central midfield.

I really hope Seamus doesn't get the run around. It's a big step up for him.

Good luck Seamus lad. I'm afraid with the likes of Klose, Podolski, Schweinsteiger and Ozil to look after, you might need it.

But Trappatoni's no mug, and he must have seen Coleman at RB. A big vote of confidence. And more experience for our lad. This has to be good news.

Seamus has very limited experience of playing full back at the highest level. It is way too soon to write him off as Everton's right back for the future. A good game against the Germans would be a start.

Well done Paul, two words but no question mark. Back to school with you.

Maybe if he gets roasted on Friday and his confidence suffers then you'll be back on with three words.

The more chances he gets to learn the position, the better he is likely to be for us. He's never a winger but could be a right back, he just needs to improve his positioning and defensive decision making.

I care because I'd like him to make it!

Best of Irish, Seamus!

You're on the world stage now!!!

It's a great vote of confidence and Trappatoni is no mug.

If he can have a solid game, and like you say Jon improve his positioning then RB has to be his position moving forward.

In my opinion he isn't a midfielder as I feel doesn't offer enough other than drifting forward and the occasional decent cross...he had a great season a few yrs back - but was that because he had no pressure on him and confidence high?

I hope it's all part of learning and he can be a decent RB for us in the future. If not a first choice.

Trapatoni is most definitely a mug...

It's not a vote of confidence from Trap. Coleman is only playing because he has no other viable option at right back.

His first choice right back (O'Shea) has to play centre half because both first choice centre halves are both out and his second choice right back (Foley) won't play because Trap messed him about before Euro 2012. The other option is Paul McShane.

Ah well Noel. We'll just have to hope his taxi to the ground isn't delayed, otherwise one of the ball boys is going to have to turn out against Germany. Now wouldn't that be something to tell the grandkids.

Shane, on the basis that not only did Diouff give Coleman the runaround recently but so did Wigan, I'd say there's every chance the likes of Podolski, Ozil and Klose will be able to pull it off too!!

The lad isn't (nor will he ever be) a RB. He can't tackle. His positional sense is non existent. He may have pace but so don't plenty of others too and they'll never be a RB either!!!

And those of you who think Trap is no mug clearly don't watch the Republic very often!!!!!

Good Luck!

I have always rated Seamus since he came onto the scene. In my opinion, he is very capable of becoming EFC's long-term right back and the experience playing with the Irish side against top opposition will only forward his development. Even if he gets skinned, the experience will be invaluable and improve him as a player.

Sean,
to put it in context, the lad came in at £60k a semi pro.
Too much hype surrounding him when he should be in the ressies.
Having said that you are 100% right in your view.

Coleman is only here because Everton cannot afford to buy a real quality right back; how long must we wait until Moyes really replaces Hibbert with a quality right back?

Both right back and right midfield has been totally overlooked ever since Moyes got here. Coleman at this time is not good enough to play in the Premier League, it is that simple.

Now correct me if i'm wrong but didn't it take Baines a season or two to get going with us. He also had the advantage of playing with Wigan for five seasons before moving to us. Seamus has had half a season on loan with Blackpool, his first full season in our first team he was utilised as a right midfielder and his second season never got going because he was subjected to that horrific tackle pre-season. Now don't get me wrong, he definitely isn't anyway close to being the finished article but I think the stick he is getting on the forum is slightly harsh when he's still learning the game.

Everton play a high defensive line and spend a lot of time in the opposition half with Coleman expected to be as advanced as Baines with acres behind him.
I'd expect with Germany forcing back two lines of four against the Irish, restricting his attacking potential, he won't be so often caught out on the break which is where fails.
Saying that, 5-0 Germany.

Alan Maher,

Consider yourself corrected; Baines spent his first season and a half on the bench, because Moyes choose to play a centre half in his position.

Once he got in, it was pretty much instant... and he simply left off from where he was at Wigan.

Coleman was a brilliant attacking RB with Blackpool in their promotion season, they really wanted to keep him. I agree with most of the comments above in that he isn't good enough to be a regular right mid although he was excellent in our best match of the other season when he scored and gave the runaround to Assou-Ekotto in the 2-1 home win to Spurs. In time I think he will be a real asset to us when Hibbert and Neville retire. He was excellent against Southampton. Any game time at International level should be welcomed.

As usual a variety of contradictory views on even the most harmless topic – which is why I enjoy it I guess. Couple of opinions that I agree with are; Seamus is only getting the start due to the defensive injuries crisis. That said, I'm delighted for the lad and will watch with interest to see how he copes at RB at this level against one of the best teams in Europe.

Trap's tactics are totally conservative, unfortunately. So I expect he will instruct SC to stay in his own half at all times. So his defensive abilities will be put to the test. Pity, because his right side forays may just stem the flow of expected German pressure.

Why anyone on here is not delighted that one of our lads makes his senior competitive debut baffles me. Surely it's only beneficial all around and a further reflection on the optimism surrounding the squad?

ps: Ireland 16/5 the draw. Might just let my heart rule my head.

A very important year for Coleman: if he can get together his defensive game this season then imagine the attacking possibilities next year from both flanks...

I think to judge Coleman incapable of playing RB for us is a little premature considering he has had only about 6 or 7 starts there and a few of them have been very promising indeed. It may well be that he doesn't cut the mustard but its still pretty early days.

Tonight will be a huge test for him defensively as the Germans have pace and movement aplenty and the likes of Podolski, Ozil, Gotze and Marco Reus are a handful for even the best defenders in the world. I really hope Seamus steps up to it as he seems like a nice lad and it would save us a few mill if he could become a permanent fixture there but if he does get roasted tonight it does not mean he should be tossed on the scrapheap.

As long as he doesn't pick up an injury, that'll do me.

Same with all our players away this week.

I admit I was going to put something together before finding definitive evidence of the Trappatoni mug:

Hope he does well. Let's not forget how awful Cashley was at defending in his first few seasons.

Just about to goto Dublin from Belfast for this game. Delighted Coleman is getting a run-out.

Trap is far from a mug. Another typical old-skool Italian performance please!

I think Coleman is an asset for us and personally I don't understand the abuse he gets

As others on this thread have mentioned, he came from semi-pro level, has acquited himself really well, has made a loads of goals for us and even nicked the odd goal for himself

I rate him and hope he does well and hope he doesn't pay attentiont to this site

C.mon Seamus lad!

On a personal note, I hope he plays well and gets Man of the Match,

Regarding the game, I hope Germany stuff them! Come on Germany!!

Who are they playing? A German team that will hold the ball at least 70% of the match and force the Irish into defending.

What does he ned to work on?? His defensive positioning.

Where will Seamus be playing? In defense camped in his half for most of the match

When will you fuckers wake up and realize that this is the perfect opportunity for him to develop his defensive positioning. NOTHING is expected of him and he's playing some of the world's best. Chance of a lifetime to learn and develop.

Why is there any downside to this?? (The only pitfall could be if his confidence takes a knock.)

We're talking about a player from fucking Sligo Rovers who cost £60k who 2 years later is starting for a top 4 side. I mean HOW can anyone slag the boy off? What an inspiration!

Just watched the Irish chase shadows and get stuffed 6-1.....

Coleman made one really bad tackle and was lucky he didn't catch the player otherwise he would have been straight off. Otherwise he was no better or worse than a pretty poor Irish team.

I have the match taped for me when I get home. I'm judging by the score that Coleman didn't morph into a goofy looking Maldini... but how'd he do overall???

The one highlight I've seen was a butcheresque, mis-timed two-footer that may or may not have resulted in a generous yellow card... that's all I've seen so far. How'd he do?

Coleman has got potential.....you can't play with O'Shea/Dea and come out smelling of roses, can you? He should switch to NI, now there's a team.

39 Posted 13/10/2012 at 04:03:02
In all honesty he held his own. He got caught square a few times but hell, Reus would make Maldini look average at the minute. That boy is on fire. A shame though about that hair. Looking like a young Vanilla Ice.

The German passing and shooting was absolutely top notch. Coleman could not be judged on his own performance except for one really bad challenge, if he had connected he would have been sent off. Otherwise ,he was no better or worse than the rest of the thoroughly walloped Irish team.

Agreement all round (at last!), This Germany side is awesome, and have the potential to be the best German side I've seen – which is some statement considering what's gone before, so no shame in losing to them.

But back to Coleman, Jaysus, give the lad a break! I remember Ratcliff's first season and he was gash most of the time with the occasional glimpse of what was to come, and Gary Stevens didn't exactly set the world alight. Give him time...
