City and Everton: Still kindred spirits?

Over at ESPNFC, Simon Curtis takes a look at the changed relationship between two clubs who for decades shared very similar experiences as they toiled under the shadow of more successful neighbours.

Manchester City's overnight transformation has, of course, changed that dynamic and Simon canvassed some opinion from Evertonians to get their opinion.

The Merseyside Blues are as close to our kindred spirits as City supporters are likely to find, and have been for a very long time now. Evertonians follow their club much the way City fans do, without too many awkward questions, with a resigned 'Sigh' and sometimes with a clenched fist.

"For long periods over the last half a century, supporting these two grand old clubs has been a little like waking up and looking in the mirror. Now City have moved into another orbit."

I suppose there was once a certain affinity between both sets of fans for obvious reasons although I always felt our lot was worse than theirs because (apart from one moderately successful team in the late 60s) City have never done a thing, whereas our loss has been greater because we had traditionally always been a major force in the English game but we have had to suffer the loss of our hard-earned status as well as watching our neighbours surpass us.

Also, there has been, in recent years, some sort of bizarre media love-in with those 'long suffering City fans' culminating in shite such as Jimmy Grimble, romanticising the City fans as some sort uniquely loyal fans, better than anyone else. Utter shite.

I personally know a couple of City fans who defend their position on the basis that all bigger clubs have traditionally taken players from smaller clubs so we have no right to moan when City do the same thing to the likes of us. Fair point, one could concede; however, to me, City are now like a greedy fat spoilt child demanding more & more: "I want him & him & him as well!"

Look at Arsenal (a club I have great admiration for), see how City have plundered their best players over the last few years. While Arsenal nurture talent & operate within a strict wage structure, City just take take take offering vulgar riches to mercenaries who can't say no. Maybe I'm jealous (just a little) but I would hope & pray that in the same circumstances, we would operate with a bit more class & dignity.

Kindred spirits, my arse! A bunch off horrible Manc gobshites who think they are better than us because of their millions. And they think that they have the divine right to beat us well...

Up yours! Our fans are ten times better than theirs and always will be.
