Ryston Drenthe finally finds a club

, Here is the City , 24 December, 41comments  |  Jump to most recent
Updated Former loan player Royston Drenthe looked to have finally found himself a club — Alania Vladikavkaz, recently promoted to the Russian Premier League — after months in limbo as a free agent but he ultimately decided not to go through with the move east.

Drenthe, 25, had been on loan at Goodison Park last season but fell out with manager David Moyes, who chose not to make the winger's move from Real Madrid permanent, even though he could have picked him up on a free.

Drenthe remains without a club and still lives in Liverpool.

What an odd choice from Royston. An odd bloke though I guess. He came across as a really nice guy but clearly had a screw loose.

Anyway, good luck. His ability is unquestionable.

Little story I heard about Drenthe last season as I work at the club.

Drenthe came in late for training in his flashy sports car with two 'ladies', went straight to his locker, grabbed whatever was in it, went back to his car and drove away.

That was the last straw with him, Moyes washed his hands of him after that.

So much potential, alas excessively so much ego. I won’t ever forgive that clown for disrupting us just before the Wembley derby.

Moyes made the right choice in preventing us from another Van der Meyde sort of situation.

Massive waste of talent. The only consolation being that if he didn't have a screw loose he wouldn't have ended up with us on loan in the first place.

Vladikavkaz is located in the Republic of North Ossetia.

Jimmy Sorheim is now frantically trying to find it on a map so he can book his flights from Norway for this season.

@ Edward Simpson

I thought it was turning up drunk to training around the same time of the semi final along with that rumour about him saying he was late one time because his car broke down but then one of the lads spotted it round the corner?

Tremendous talent but not right for EFC...or any top flight, serious team it would seem...his new club are bound to find out after parting with plenty of money for his wages...

Still though, getting rid of him was major mistake wasn't it Mr Moyes...given that we've done so badly since he left (come on Jimmy, where are you?)

I still think Drenthe was a good player for us on the right side, though in hindsight, he has done all this to himself. Still, I think it is sad, as we could have used him right now. I cannot know what went on between him and Moyes, but surely on a free he was worth the chance.

We could have sold him on after a while if all went wrong.

Why did Moyes get him on loan if he had not done his research? He had to know all about his mood before he signed him. I just think Moyes could have gotten Drenthe and turned him – if anyone can, it has to be Moyes. He dealt with Gazza and Duncan so I just think Moyes should at least tell us why he did not sign him.

Personally, I think Drenthe just had enough of sitting on the bench when he knew there was no-one better to take his spot at the time!

Quite unusual for TW unanimity all round, to be honest I cannot summon a molecule of sympathy for a footballer especially today’s millionaire breed who think that football disrupts their hectic social life-just give me the money and let me do ma thang.

So will this work out for Royston? Well, as someone who would donate their bollock for the chance to play 45 minutes in a blue shirt, you need to address this question to someone who gives a flying fuck.

I reckon it's good at times to have a loose cannon in the team, especially one with so much talent... look at Balotelli — an absolute arse but helped City win the league last year.

I reckon with the right work and effort Drenthe could have been a Goodison Great — or we could have got him on that free and sold him to the Russians ourselves — either way a win win.

Another story of a player not being able to handle big bucks. He's just young enough to turn things around and if he does it I hope we will be the one's to give him another shot (after he has been clean and responsible for a period). One good way for him to prove his commitment to any potential club would be to play for nothing. Let him who has never sinned and so on.

I think that it took until Christmas to find a club, says everything about his reputation. He had a penchant for the incredible, but realistically is not good enough for a top club, and will probaly never be because of his mentality. A wasted talent, and fortunately for us, we now have a far superior Mirallas in place of him.

Drenthe is a better talent than Mirallas, at least technically. If Drenthe had his head he'd be competing with Ronaldo for MOTM awards.

Jimmy #879, Moyes never dealt with Gazza. He spat his dummy after his enabler Walter was sacked, and the only dealing Moyes had with Gazza was agreeing a termination of contract.

As Jon Ferguson #866 says if he was a flawless diamond Real Madrid wouldn't have been trying to get him out of there at a substantial loss. Bear in mind that Moyes probably looks back on what happened with van der Meyde (confirmed subsequently by the player in his "memoirs") and thought "fuck that". Correctly.

Moyes has polished a couple of rough diamonds, but we can't expect him to polish a turd.

How many assists, goals did he get compared to Donovan last season? From what I remember he produced little, fell over loads and got ratted. Big reputation, young, but stuff on the pitch, SFA.

Not signing for Liverpool is a regret.

Nick, I really can't agree that Drenthe is better technically...he is a decent player, don't get me wrong, but I think Mirallas' touch, vision and dribbling ability are far better. When I saw Drenthe in the under 21 Championships prior to his move to Madrid, you could tell he had alot of potential...but he was raw. Ultimately, the player I saw at Everton, was just as raw as the one in the Under 21's.

Shame though...with the right attitude, he would have been a nice addition.

Nick #891, I'm convinced half of your posts are contrived wind-ups, as the alternative is almost too disturbing to contemplate. Wouldn't normally respond, but Drenthe had very limited talents on the pitch. Yes, he had pace. Yes he had a howitzer of a shot. Set against that was a lack of tactical awareness, unwillingness to even feign defending, and extremely poor pass selection - I think you'll find he probably had as many negative assists as he did positive.

And that's just his on the field contribution.

Mirallas is selfish, and I'm sure Jelavic hates it to a point, but Mirallas was actually played up front a lot in his last club. That said, Mirallas has brought a lot more in his short, injury-interrupted time to date than Royston of the Rovers Return ever did, and as long as he's not another Owen in the hamstrung department, I'm sure we'll see a lot more from him in the future.

Merry Xmas to all T'webbers.

Royston Drenthe was a liability. Exciting, yes... but he lost us the Carling Cup game v Chelsea by picking up 2 needles yellows and getting sent off when they were down to 10...

Then to take the mick, FA Cup semi-final week v the rs shows he had no respect for Everton Moyes and all us blue boys who deserve better. Mirallas is potentially more productive and appears a good pro. Good riddance, Royston... waster!
Nick Entwistle
29 Posted 25/12/2012 at 00:07:09
I'm not going to revise my opinion of his technical skill on the basis that he was a bit of a prick. And I'd disagree that Mirallas has done more in his short time... if ultimately he will be more productive in all aspects of the football club.

But the sense of danger that ran through the opposition when he started to run with the ball was immense, and at the time with no opposite winger or decent strike force he alone made the team in to a threatening outfit and would not only change the dynamic of the team but the stadium when being subbed on.

His influence waned when he started acting up and so forced the hand of Moyes. But as above, if he had Mirallas' head he'd be twice the player.

Don't know why that should be thought of as a wind-up, his talent was obvious.

Happy Jesus Day.

"If Drenthe had his head he'd be competing with Ronaldo for MOTM awards."

Thanks for that Nick. Certainly brought a smile to my face. Hell why stop at Ronaldo why not add Messi in there as well!

I think you need to re-watch some of his performances preferably sober and in the cold light of day. I remember the Sunderland game vividly where he could not get past a single player and lost the ball every time he attempted to run at a very average defence. Some player indeed. The only thing he had going for him was pace. To mention him in the same breath as Ronaldo is just insane sorry.

Yes, I hear all you people complaining about his attitude, but myself and my mates got visibly excited each week when we knew he was in the team. It gave us something that we hadn't had for years: pace, skill and unpredictability.

So, while good riddance might be the universal theme here, I would just like to say that he brought some great excitement for quite a few games and I thank him for that. If he could have kept his shit together, he would have been worth the wait...

33 Posted 25/12/2012 at 16:03:04
He was available for the FA semi , nose to spite the face comes to mind. When we forgot that we were winning and tried to get a draw his pace could have been enough to remind them that they were shite without ratatouille and should defend instead.

Let's face it who else was going to do it on the day ? We had no one else to possibly scare them in that second half.

If we had gotten to the final they same thing might've applied , if we'd won DM could have then told him he was a loon and wasn't wanted for St Georges Hall... he's strict like that.

Merry Xmas everyone.

I agree fully with Steve Cotton, Royston Drenthe is now gone and whatever could have been is lost. I do not rely on chit chat about what went wrong before the semi final vs the RS, his dicipline should have been better though so it was his own fault not getting a full contract.

Moyes is stubborn as can be so I also think Moyes could have played him a lot more then he did; I personally think Drenthe was tired of not playing and so got fed up. There was nobody better then him at the time so Moyes not playing him was a clear signal to Drenthe that he did not want him.

I think Drenthe should have played every possible game last season, and maybe Drenthe would end up being grateful, instead of what really happened.

Drenthe is just a sad story now, he has moved on and I wish him luck, because I think he has that little extra spark in him that creates chances and goals. I do feel sad it did not work out at Everton, such a shame... I want another one like him without the off-field problems, perhaps he can be found on loan?

if we have all lost the plot it could happen.

I think Steve Cotton has it right. For all his faults, when Drenthe's name was on the team sheet I got excited. Seriously, in the last few seasons, Moyes has put out 11s where the most exciting player was Lescott, or Coleman. Drenthe brought that flair that EFC desperately needed. Luckily, without him we now have Mirallas.
