Everton to face Liverpool's conquerors

Ex-Blue Baxter helps KO his boyhood team
Former Everton midfielder Jose Baxter played a crucial role in his Oldham Athletic side beating Liverpool 3 - 2 in the fourth Round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

And the draw for the 5th Round of the famous old competition, taking place just minutes after the end of that thrilling game, threw up an another fascinating tie, Everton now having to visit Boundary Park next month.

Baxter, described as a 15-year-old by former youth coach Ray Hall as better than Wayne Rooney at the same age, was released by the Blues last summer after failing to make the grade at Goodison and was without a club when Crystal Palace turned down the chance to turn a trial spell into a permanent move last August.

A Liverpool fan since he was a boy, 11 goals with Oldham has got Baxter's career back on track and, after helping knock Liverpool out he will get the chance to do the same to the club under which he grew up as a youth and trainee.

For Everton, the draw represents a fourth successive away tie in cup competition this season, coming on the back of a long sequence of home ties through last season.

Nice to see Baxter pulling the strings today and well done Smith for winning the hard battles, softening up the shite so Oldham can take a half-time lead. Of course, no lower league team should give a money bags club a tough game, should they?

Just watched the first half Oldham v RS. As well his 2 goals, centre forward Matt Smith has won more ariel challenges in one half, than Jelavic has done for us all season. Come on Oldham!

The game is great Roman but I still fear the cheating rat, especially when Stevie G comes on as they seem to have a good understanding. I can see why Moyes didn't give Baxter more playing time though, not too impressive, perhaps a similar reason to why Vellios hasn't had much playing time.

I think Baxter has done well... though he looks similar to what he did last few years; he is a good player prone to making some strange decisions but definitely able to produce some top quality moments. I'm glad he found a home at Oldham it will progress him far more than staying would have, may never make a prem player but he definitely going to improve.

I think it highlights a problem we have, our players are going out on loan enough in my eyes, if Vellios and Barkley were just never going to play this season they should be out there in the Championship or even League One getting proper game time in a competative environment, the reserves and U21s is just not enough to develop them beyond a certain stage.

Before the draw starts can I point out a bug bare of mine is that ITV give a lot of time telling who is what number in the draw and even have the graphic up while the draw takes place.

Anyone care to tell me the point of this? Number comes out and one second later the club is named.

Don't forget so and so are number 16 in the draw... And?

Now that grinding win yesterday isn't looking as bad to me. Doesn't change the fact that the performances are consistently poor recently, but my God so many upsets. Spurs out, shite out, Norwich out, QPR out, Chelsea have a replay (an extra match for them to worry about doesn't hurt our push for top 4 at all). Now I'm just happy we got the win with all that happened around us.

Didn't we get four home draws in the Cup last year? Looks like it's going to be four aways before we get to Wmbley this year.

Feel sorry for Luton. They beat Norwich and what do they get? A home game against no one's favourites, Millwall. Likewise MK Dons, who must have been hoping for something better than home to Barnsley.

Just listening to Five Live 606. First 2 callers again Reds - neither from anywhere near Liverpool - moaning. Why do they continue to say Stevie G, Kenny, Brendan, as if they know them.

Can hardly wait for the Oldham game - - was there last time we played them - - what a ground.

Up The Blues.

Nick 251 We'll need more cold weather players at Boundary Park as it is bloody freezing there with that wind coming in from the gap in the corner. My overriding memory of when they knocked us out (in 1989?).

Arsenal over Blackburn
Leeds over Man City (my one big upset)
Man Utd over Reading
and
Middlesborough will beat Brentford after Chelsea drop the replay.

Er, come to think of it, who ARE our "cold weather players"? (See Joe @ 279) Or, rather, who isn't? Will Mirallas fancy it in the wind and rain of Boundary Park? Or Oviedo?

Please answer (1) seriously , and (2) comically.

Going for the second option, can I put forward Victor Anichilly? I think Seamus Coldman is probably a bit too obvious. Leighton Chillblaines?

Apparently, they call Rogers "Brenton" as he's like David Brent off the office.

My stomach's hurting with laughter after the "Rogers Out!" calls on Radio Merseyside.

Boundary Park... hmm brings back, for us older Blues, memories of the night, which went down in Everton folklore, of the night we last won promotion to the top flight by beating Oldham 4 - 0. I'm already busy on our archives bringing back my memories of that famous night and would love to hear from others, amongst the senior blues, who remember scales the wall of tar that surrounded the ground.

What can you say about the greatest leveller in the game? Our own FA Cup competition, I have never lost my love for a competition that, to me, beats every other cup in the world including the money grabbing EU ones. Luton, Oldham, Leeds, MK Dons, possibly Brentford so far...

For excitement and edge of your seat drama plus, for us, the result from Boundary Park today against the big spenders from across that other Park — brilliantly well done, all you so-called 'minnows'!!!

We certainly owe Oldham one after previous FA Cup ties.

I was at Boundary Park in 1990 when we threw away a 2-0 lead on their awful plastic pitch and then had Big Norm sent off for absolutely nothing in the replay and only just got a draw with a late Sheedy penalty in Extra Time before succumbing in the 2nd replay after again throwing away a lead and losing to THAT infamous mistake by Neil McDonald.

2008 was every bit as bad. Poor team selection. Abysmal performance were we created nothing and had the soon to depart McFadden playing like he couldn't have give a toss.

Time for a bit of revenge for these embarrassing defeats.

Patrick Murphy
184 Posted 27/01/2013 at 22:47:55
I was at those games as well Ste, the referee seemed to give everything against us, didn't we have a Cottee goal disallowed? Just think if we had reached the Semi's that year and beat United, how differently history may have been. The FA Cup is important, it was the catalyst for our 1980s team as it was for Fergie at United.
Patrick Murphy
185 Posted 27/01/2013 at 22:55:40
This was the team that lost to Oldham at Goodison in 2008, Howard isn't playing, but Moyes' got pelters for playing a weakened Team?

Everton: Wessels, Hibbert, Stubbs, Jagielka, Baines (Lescott 74), Pienaar, Gravesen (Anichebe 63), Carsley, McFadden, Johnson, Vaughan (Yakubu 64).
Subs Not Used: Ruddy, Anderson

Arteta (suspended)
Cahill (injured)
Yobo (injured)
Osman (injured)
Turner (injured)
So who did he leave out? that was so central to the team on that day. Also we had a Semi-final against Chelsea to play the following mid-week. Expectations have soared since those days haven't they?

Denis Richardson
186 Posted 27/01/2013 at 23:04:35

Patrick Murphy
187 Posted 27/01/2013 at 23:31:20
No I wasn't joking, I'm getting on a bit yer know and honestly couldn't remember who was missing. That wasn't a bad squad we had then was it? Four main strikers Cahill, Saha, Yakubu and Johnson in the squad plus Vaughan and Anichebe.

Karl Masters
188 Posted 27/01/2013 at 23:26:21
Moyes has learnt his lesson about weakened teams the hard way in recent years with defeats to Oldham, Brentford and Leeds. Funny how those very same three teams popped up today to remind all premier league fans, managers and players to never underestimate the opposition.

Shite got what they deserved playing essentially four forwards and leaving their captain on the bench meaning an unbalanced team that shipped three goals. If I read any more nonsense on here about Moyes being tactically inept when the so called tactical genius Rodgers is clearly even worse.....

Michael Kenrick
189 Posted 27/01/2013 at 23:44:04
Our Match Report from back then includes this postscript:

Moyes would later rue the decision to field a weakened team: “We found out against Oldham to our cost that you have to be at your full to win the game. We have to be totally focused on every game we are in, whether we are 2-0 up or 2-0 down.” — David Moyes, prior to the Uefa Cup 2nd leg at home to SK Brann.

Previous game at Boro:

Howard
Hibbert
Jagielka
Lescott
Valente
Carsley
Neville {c}
Pienaar (Anichebe 90')
McFadden (Baines 80')
Johnson
Yakubu (Vaughan 87')

Next game at Chelsea:

Howard
Hibbert
Yobo
Jagielka
Lescott
Neville
Carsley
McFadden
Cahill
Johnson
Yakubu (89' Anichebe)

So the answer is.... Phil Neville!!!!

I'm fairly sure Fellaini and Saha hadn't signed for us in January 2008. That, and Rodwell would not have been very prominent at that point.
Karl Masters
191 Posted 27/01/2013 at 23:50:09
Patrick. Saha and Fellaini only signed for us at the end of August 2008 and Rodwell was 16, having made one substitute appearance in a 'dead rubber ' Europa game at Eindhoven two weeks before so not really a squad member either.

I always think we should have done better that season than we finally did. 4th was a real possibility until April while we should have claimed a draw in that semi first leg against Chelsea and could then have played Spurs in the final, whilst the Europa adventure ended with the agony of Fiorentinas and penalties with bloody Glasgow Rangers getting to the final in Manchester!

For me the squad has improved much since then, a damning indictment of the Board, whilst Moyes has kicked on with even less money to spend than then.

Who's Steve Nicol? On ESPN's soccer website, he was talking about the Red Shite's defeat today. All 3 goals against were the Shite's fault. You'd have thought any 11 of us were out there instead of professionals working their socks off; lower league or not. And the 2 RS goals were great ones.

Don't know Nicol, but thought he might've shown a little respect to Oldham.

David Barks
197 Posted 28/01/2013 at 02:22:05
Rahman,

Please tell me you're joking, please. We offered him a contract, he refused to sign it. He thought he would be picked up by Crystal Palace and only drop to the Championship, they decided not to offer him a contract. He was without a club living at hom until Stubbs recommended him to Dickov, which is why he's plying his trade in League One. We didn't let him go, he chose to leave thinking he would be picked up and almost had his career ended, Stubbs saving his career by getting him a job.

Paul and Christopher – Thanks. While I respect anyone's bias towards one team or another, I believe if you're on TV as an "expert", one should look at both sides of things with at least some balance. Couldn't imagine Oldham being anything but a EPL punching bag over 38 games. But for 90 minutes they came out tops and I felt, watching him, Nicol should have given them credit, even if for just taking advantage of RS mistakes.

On what basis should we re sign Baxter as mentioned on a post above?

He's ended up at a League One outfit which says it all.

This prick was slagging us off on Twitter when he left, thought he was better than he really is, was involved in one or two very dodgy incidents off the pitch which everyone knows and has given loads of interviews in the build up to the Oldham/Red Shite game banging on about his devotion to all things red.

Do we really need such a Knob at our club? No.

He wasn't even that good yesterday, and missed a sitter.

I see the Daily Mirror is now saying that Everton FC should concentrate on winning the FA Cup as it is more of a prize than achieving CL Qualification, I happen to agree with the theory, but I don't think we should just give up hope of doing both. I wonder if this article has anything to do with our neighbour's need to achieve CL as they have gambled a lot of money on doing so?

I don't think the Mirror would have been saying this if the other lot hadn't been knocked out of the FA Cup.

We get Steve Nicol almost daily on Presspass and he is a complete nob. Typical Redshite arrogance and never happy to give praise to other clubs.

On that 2008 squad that played against Oldham, the other thing that people might forget is that Baines was third choice left back after Valente and Lescott. He took quite a few seasons to bed in and mature into the great player we now have.

A great comment on Radio Merseyside tonight. The winners of the cup will be one of us, Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd or Chelsea should we get through. The real big 5. Shame the others aren't away or facing each other, but if we can get through and get a home/good draw next it could be a special year.

Full FA Cup 5th Round Draw:

Huddersfield Town or Leicester City v Wigan Athletic
MK Dons v Barnsley
Oldham Athletic v Everton
Luton Town v Millwall
Arsenal v Blackburn
Man City v Leeds United
Man Utd v Reading
Middlesbrough v Chelsea or Brentford
