Everton launch bid for Negredo

, 30 January, 64comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton appear to have made £9m-rated Spanish forward Alvaro Negredo their top transfer target after calling off negotiations for Leroy Fer this afternoon.

BBC Sport's chief sports writer, Phil McNulty, lent credence to earlier reports in

The Mirror and the Daily Mail that the Blues will try and negotiate Sevilla down from their £13m asking price for the 27 year-old given the Spanish club's financial problems.

Negredo, a one-time target of Tottenham Hotspur, has 14 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for Sevilla this season

The Mirror article also claims that Everton are looking to revive a loan move for Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe following the collapse of the Leroy Fer deal, a possibility seeing as his agent, whom he shares with Kevin Mirallas, was at Goodison this evening, but McNulty does not see that as likely.

Additionally, there are indications that David Moyes could revisit a deal for Fer in the summer when the Club will have more time to thrash out an arrangement. The 23 year-old was set on a move to Goodison and would welcome any hope that the transfer could be revived.

Hope it's true... But what's the score with the Belgian midfielder Vadis?

1) Why was the deal so late in the summer?

2) Why haven't we been back in for him (and why has no one else)?

3) Why did the official site announce the agreement of the fee for Leroy Fer. What was the point?

We need someone who can poke the ball in the net. Tonight was a joke — How did Osman miss that sitter?

We can't afford players who think they have no competition. I will be amazed if we get anyone half-decent but pleased if I am proved wrong.

I've just watched the YouTube clip and I don't understand why Suarez got an 8 game ban for calling Evra 'Negredo' that was surely a polite compliment, the lad looks boss!

Seriously tho the technique involved in some of those goals was off the scale, YouTube or not!

Getting hold of a top striker has to be our #1 priority tomorrow. Negredo is very very good. I've seen him play in Sevilla and Spanish footie is on all the time over here - Chicago: 4 games a weekend.

A little bit of me just thinks that this is too big a coup for us; we don't normally do this sort of thing, we don't normally get this sort of player with this class. Can just see someone nipping in at the last minute: Spuds, not QPR please.

Hope I'm wrong. Vadis/Negredo if this happened, would be another exceptional January window. 5Live reporting on midnight news that we are in talks with Sevilla and they need the sponds. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. But these two - and I'd love a v good goalie but I can't ask for everything - would be such an asset for the last 14 games and make all of us feel good about the months ahead.

If true (and unless the cavalry have turned up financially) this would spell the end of someones career at EFC I would imagine.

That said, I would be surprised if we have any deals lined up to sell Jelavic or Vellios so maybe this is more evidence that decent money has been conjured up specifically for the purpose of pushing for fourth.

Still hoping that a deal for a central midfielder can also happen. Is it conceiveable that this deal will still be pushed through if Twente relent and Leroy Fer becomes available on terms that suit us better?

Until one of these deals actually comes off it is still hard to believe that we really have some money to spend without a high profile player being sold first.

Always put more faith in report from the BBC. If this happens it would be a massive boost. Could get Jelavic going again as well. We could really use some Spanish flair in the team. Maybe that story about Moyes requesting £20 million up front in January to push for the Champions League had some truth to it.

If we are to get past Spurs we need goals but we also need to start defending properly. In the Prem we've only scored 3 goals on 1 or 2 occasions (Saints and Swansea?) but otherwise we cannot score loads which our rivals have done.

It wouldn't matter if we could keep clean sheets but we make stupid mistakes at the back.

We need Hibbert back, a back four looking best and Gibson in front of them. Get this plus some inspiration up front and we will come 4th. Why? Because the recent Spurs, Arsenal and RS resurgence is because they are not in Europe. In a few weeks they will be...

Looks like Negredo is ours. Wikipedia is never wrong is it? This is what Wiki currently says.....

"Álvaro Negredo Sánchez (born 20 August 1985) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for Everton FC as a striker. He is a boss striker that will score loads of belters in front of the Gwladys. Bill Kenwright's West End theatre productions helped finance the deal."

It also says he as born in Bootle so it will be a bit of a homecoming for the lad! Great signing! Well done Bill & Davey!

Ian Allaker

I hope not. Doesn't look anything special, doesn't score that many goals and is 27-years-old. There won't be any sell-on value and will be lucky to get 5 good years out of him.
Jamie Sweet
26 Posted 31/01/2013 at 01:09:22
Almost a goal every two games in La Liga and 6 in 12 for Spain can hardly be described as "doesn't score many goals" Ian.

Maybe revise that to "doesn't score many goals compared to Messi" and you might be correct, but any striker around the 50% mark is pretty impressive in my book.

Ian Allaker
27 Posted 31/01/2013 at 01:18:01
That's what I mean Jamie. If you cant score close to 100 goals in a year in the Spanish league you cant be all that good. there are only two proper games a season, its like the Scottish league before Rangers left.

Peter crouch : 22 goals in 44 international appearances

Negrado : 6 goals in 12 international appearances.

I think thats comparable James but crouch was in a much poorer team.

In all seriousness though, I would hope Everton could bring in a younger striker or one who scores between 15 to 25 goals a season consistantly.

Look as though we may be head to head with Spurs in this. Lets face it, if we can pull this off the players will for get a huge life, so will the fans... and may all start to believe that that CL spot is up for grabs...

And on another note... Where is Hibbo when we need him!

Jamie Sweet
34 Posted 31/01/2013 at 01:43:20
Van Persie (age 29) had a similar goals per game ratio for Arsenal as Negredo has for Sevilla and a worse record than Peter Crouch at International level.

Don't see too many Man Utd fans bemoaning the signing of a player who "doesnt score that many goals" or that "there won't be any sell on value" or that they "will be lucky to get 5 good years out of him!"

To invalidate the Spanish League because Messi scores lots of goals, or to suggest there are only two important matches is far too simplistic..Malaga and Athletico would give any English team a run for their money...and Negredo's goal scoring record over the past three season's as an impressive feat. The success of recent imports, most especially Michu, has illustrated that the gap between Spain and England is a little bit of a fallacy

However...

I would still rather see us invest in a CM. I'm still really disappointed about the Fer Deal personally, and whilst I think Negredo is talented (And Mirallas/Fellaini/Negredo would be an incredible trio), when Gibson is injured, a central midfield of Neville and Osman will hold us back. To be linked with these players is fantastic...but I'm still worried about what will happen to us when Mirallas tweaks a hamstring, or Gibson injures his thigh again. Ideal situation I suppose would be to pull Negredo and a cm on loan out of the bag.

Jim Knightley
40 Posted 31/01/2013 at 02:09:28
And Ian, if a player scores goals, it doesn't equate to pissing money up the walls. Just because we have financial difficulties, it doesn't mean we have to look at every player in terms of sell on value. Negredo may add that extra bit of quality to win us an FA Cup or get us 4th. And to get a young player who will guarantee 15-25 goals a season will cost more than £9million.
Ian Allaker
41 Posted 31/01/2013 at 02:10:49
Forlan couldt score in a brothel in the PL, he scored goals for fun in spain. Michu is just having one of those season like Jelly and Cisse had in their first season, it wont last.

"And to get a young player who will guarantee 15-25 goals a season will cost more than £9million."

Jamie Sweet
44 Posted 31/01/2013 at 02:12:16
Buying Van Persie - and subsequently the Premier League title isn't pissing money up the walls. Similarly signing Negredo and getting 4th would be far better than not getting him and finishing 5th. It would prove to be a very good investment.

I think he's a quality player and would do well for us.

I just hope Ian, if he goes to Spurs, that you are proven to be right, and if he signs for us, that I am!

Don't forget the fact that Luka Modric has been piss poor in La Liga up to date, despite being dominant in the PL. To question this lads ability because he plays in Spain is merely ignorance about the quality of the rest of European leagues.

Allaker you know very little about Negredo apart from what you can leech on line. Those of us who have watched and admired him for some time now know exactly what can bring to us and what shit you are talking.

Pick your battles Allaker and this is not one of them. If we get him and he does well you'll be singing Moyesboy's praises to high Heaven as you usually do.

Let's face it...there are maybe 2 or 3 players in every major European League that are consistently at the top of the scoring charts. Very few players can do it year in year out. The great one's learn to adapt and add to their game... so its a matter of time before we find out if Cisse and Jelavic can find their early form again. As it is, lets hope Negredo can come in and give us all a lift before the final push. If he does, then in the summer we do it all over again and try to pick up another couple of top players... etc etc blah blah blah. Ian is just on the wind-up!

The lad is fine player but Ian is right in one respect. His likely sell on value will not excite the Board. Of course, after tonights results they may have visions of 4th place and really go for it.

Ossie is also a fine player who fills the gaps and pops up in very good positions around the box. If only he could regain his old shooting skills. His missed sitters are mounting up

Si. I had a right go at Tim Howard on another thread, as you probably know. What I failed to add was the fact that I would not yet go for someone else.

On a recent radio show a continental manager stated that keepers should be judged on mistakes and not saves. the better the keeper the less mistakes. Buffon, Julio Cesare etc are exceptional. The others all make mistakes galore. Real prize gaffs that cause managers to throw themselves to the ground. I notice Howard because he flaps with time to think and I am a blue....This Brummie goalie they are all going on about. Playing for the under 21's he completely missed a shot that was head height and straight at him. It was as though he didn't see it.

There is also the additional fact that our goalie is one of Uncle Bills "Untouchables " so trying to get him removed would be a total waste of time and energy.

I must say I laughed on the way to bed last night when I read Negredo and The Mirror in the same sentence. But I wouldn't have thought McNulty would take part in such nonsense so there's a good chance there's something in it.

However, Moyes must feel the need to get a midfielder in too as he was after Fer so my guess he'll go for a late late deal out of nowhere for a midfielder with Negredo as the decoy.

'Pablo, Ratboy call Evra "negrito", not "Negredo". A small difference to us that speak the Queen's English is a big difference to our latino based linguists of the continents.'

I fear you may have missed the joke there, Roman.

Don't know anything about this lad but I'd have to say a striker isn't a priority in my opinion. Anichebe was fantastic last night. When he gives 100% and the fans are behind him he is a different player.

I'm a fan of Neville's but he needs to retire. His influence is unquestionable but his ability is frighteningly limited. A new CM is needed - Moyes obviously doesn't rate Hitzlsperger (who is 10 times the player Neville is). Failing investment, perhaps we can recall that world class prospect from Leeds, drop Fellaini deeper, and actually give our youth the chance to shine.

My gut instinct tells me this is another 'ghost bid' for a player. It's happened far too often during the Kenwright years.

It will break down and the club will blame the player, or his agent, injury etc etc. Heard it all before.

Cynical? Me??

Roman - Pablo Hernandez, the Spanish international Swansea somehow managed to get in from Valencia for less than 6million...Has been fantastic for them this season, especially for his recent injury.

Interesting Adam...anyone have any ideas who? Thiago from Barca? :D

Also rumours that something is happening with Stones (18 year old Barnsley right back). I would be happy if it did as well...I know we need to concentrate on a senior CM/RM/ST (in that order imo), but he looks a player with good potential.

Ambition vs capability???
Bobby Thomas
72 Posted 01/02/2013 at 03:36:17
Roman, issue resolved by Jim above and no further explanation necessary on that one!!

My unclear ambition vs capability reference above is in relation to our attempts this window to get players in. We've tried but ultimately haven't been able to get things done.

We were close on Fer but the way structure of the deal has been the problem and Negredo looked looked a complete non starter really.

Main issue for me is if we have had the room financially to try these deals, however much of a pain in the arse we may be to negotiate with, then there has obviously been room to get people in to boost the squad on loan.

We have been attempting permanent signings so late in the day we have left ourselves no time to add any loans when the deals have stalled, that's the frustrating thing.
