TW Player of the Month: Kevin Mirallas

, 14 March, 16comments  |  Jump to most recent
Kevin Mirallas was voted player of the month for February 2013 by ToffeeWeb readers.

The Belgian forward received the most votes, with a 36% share of the 2,500+ cast, for the month.

A reflection of his improving form since returning from injury, he is the first player to beat out Leighton Baines or Marouane Fellaini so far this season

Not sure he's really quite as good as we'd all hope/like to think though. "Mercurial" seems the most apt description.

Still the best attacking threat over the last - very poor - month though and probably deserves this vote

Joe (209) - mercurial definitely, but like Baines and Barkley, imo a 'footballer'. I don't mean midfield player or full back, just what we used to call 'a dead good footballer'. Will make mistakes, have bad games, head will go down etc but a footballer definitely. In the way that Phil Neville isn't.

No I get that Eugene and I agree, just more consistency would be good. That's the real mark of the better footballers, outrageous talents like Messi or Ronaldo aside

I'd prefer to see him more central. At least he makes things happen.

I agree with Eugene, Mirallas at least tries to do stuff we all liked footy players do when we were kids dribble and shoot. Players like KM are rare breeds at Everton these days enjoy him while it lasts. I reckon he could play at higher level than we offer him.

Eugene exactly right - we haven't got enough footballers, plenty of players that have a certain effect but few good football players. Bit off topic, but this is my biggest grievance with Fellaini - for all the good he can do on his day he just is not what I like to think of as a good footballer.

Mirallas would do well up front Ian, but we have got joy from adding the threat of the right wing to our game which I would fear losing.

I don't think anyone stood out enough to be player of the month really. Mirallas is best of a bad bunch I guess.

How typical of TWebers to choose as 'player of the month' a guy who never even completed a full 90 minutes game. Now I know that the major fault for that is Tactically Inept Davey but still or 'best' player is not even good enough for 90 minutes. Says it all about the current state of Everton Football Club really.

Tim Jones, you speak a lot of tripe. It's clearly not that Mirallas is not 'good' enough for 90 minutes. It's because he has only recently come back from a re-occurring injury and he's not back to his maximum fitness. You're clearly desperate to have a go at nearly everything to do with the club at the moment.

Mirallas is one of those players you just want to have the ball as much as possible and that's been a rare luxury as an Evertonian over the last decade or so.

His inconsistency is as much down to finding his feet in a new league and coming back to full fitness following frustrating injury as anything else, IMO, and I don't think we've yet seen the best of him.

For now, as Tony says, I'm just enjoying watching him in Royal Blue while I can.

With the Fellaini transfer incoming funds in mind.Buy a wide right quick, direct player and play Mirallas behind a forward.Very obvious that he is too good to be restricted by playing in the wide positions. Potentially a good partnership with Jelavic (cue the he is shite shouts) they are on the same wavelength and Jelavic will benefit from balls played into his feet, not asking him to get on the end knockdowns from 50 yard balls.
All of the above requires a change of manager of course.

Not at all Paul, if Moyes is still here next season, he will have to do without Fellaini and will hopefully have a little bit of moolah to spend. Not a massive change in formation and tactics

A friend of mine supports Panathanaikos, and I asked him what he thought of Mirallas. Even though he used to play for their city rivals, he was extremely complimentary. He was surprised to hear about his injury problems, as he didn't have any problems whilst in Greece (we knew this from Wikipedia), but he said he absolutely has to be played up top to get the best out of him.

I know we don't do two up top, and from games earlier in the season I got the impression that he and Jelavic couldn't play together - both too selfish, with numerous cases of Jelavic berating him for taking on the shot and not passing to him.

With Jelavic in the run of form, it couldn't hurt to give Mirallas a run of games starting up front. He couldn't be any less prolific.

I think we have to make the most out of him while we have him because he will want to be in a side where he can express himself and play like he did at Olympiakos and under Dreary he hasn't been able to. Unless there is a change of style or manager he could soon be on his way.

Tony j Williams,

How do you see the tactical change working, what would be your formation?

Not much of an accolade is it player of the month. Give the month we've had actually Mirallas doesn't strike me as a Moyes-type player at all. Quick, direct, a lot of flair and given a good run of games he'll get hs share of goals.

No, Naismith is more your Moyes-type of pro — lacks pace, can't pass more than 15 yards, and we're lucky to get more than 4 goals a season — a great return for Moyes-type of midfielder. Oh and they've also got to have the ability of not being able to smile either.

God, I'm still depressed after the Wigan game.
