Jagielka will succeed Neville as skipper

David Moyes indicated today that Phil Jagielka will be named Everton's Club Captain when Phil Neville leaves this summer.

Jagielka has been Moyes's first choice to wear the Captain's armband when Neville hasn't been playing so it was a widely-expected move.

Neville recently announced his decision to move on from Goodison when his contract expires at the end of the current season.

The 36 year-old has decided to move on after eight years with the Blues and his manager admitted that had Neville decided to stay, "we'd have loved to have him on the coaching staff" but he is hoping to extend his top-flight playing career by another year at least.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but with David Moyes's future uncertain, should he be naming a captain for next year?

If he's staying then it's his business who he names as captain, but if he's not signing, surely he should leave it vacan for his successor to decide.

I agree with Jags as captain though, seems logical given that he has been in charge of the armband in Neville's absence.

Lee, he's got no choice. If he were not to name a replacement, people would jump to the conclusion that he's definitely not staying. Whilst there's still uncertainty, he's definitely not leaving either, so the best way to move forward is business as usual.

If there were a change in manager in the summer, then that manager would make changes as he sees fit, both to team personnel and backroom staff. Similarly if there were new owners in the summer, they would be free to do likewise with either the team manager or excutives within the club. Okay that last bit is stretching reality so I'll stop.

Seems to be a natural changing of the guard to me, but why is Moyes picking the captain if his future is uncertain? What if he goes and the new man wants a new skipper?

Considering that Jags can hoof the ball further than anyone else in the team, it seems only natural to me.

Does this mean that we will not be signing Vidic or Lahm?

I think Ross I'd sign Messi, Ronaldo, Bale and get Mourinho, as well as Vidic and Lahm.

Good suggestions Ross, but how will they respond to Jags as team captain?

Ross
I think Mourinho would sell himto a mid table team called Liverpool.

Does all look pretty strange.
He's naming Jags as Captain
He's saying his squad is "ageing" and needs at least 4 or 5 young faces.
All things we know
Why would someone who is NOT committed to the Club be interested in naming a new Captain and leaving an acknowledged ageing squad, something he was moaning about when he first arrived !
To be honest he needs to either put up or shut up.
Either sign a bloody contract or say now he's off and lets move on !
Bloody disgrace !!

Absolutely John
If Moyes did this with another club, he'd be sacked right off. Kenwright needs to get some balls and give Moyes a timeframe or an ultimatum and if he still can't decide then he should let him go.

John, the club can move on without a decision from Moyes, they don't want to. Until he signs a contract he should not be making any decisions that have impact beyond this season. His favourites might not be those of the next caretaker we get.

John, what possible help would it do if were to leave now? Or if he were to not name a captain?

Its not as though if he left the new manager could not choose a different captain and it would be weird if we did not have a captain for the rest of the season so I can't really see what else he is expected to do under the circumstances.

I do not think Jagielka is the best choice for captain. I think Baines is the best candidate because he is the most consistent performer and would be a good captain because of that.
Neville had that winning personality going for him, so he was a good captain because of that.
Jagielka is too incosistent to be a captain in my view.

A captain should be a role model for other players and Baines is the most consistent of all the Everton players in his performances.

I find it weird that Moyes points out that Jagielka will be the next captain for NEXT season, after all he may not be here then.
It indicates that Moyes has now decided to stay, at least if his terms are met.

Sam
if he wants away just do like Neville has done and make it known.
It's not as if it will make a huge difference in where we finish 6th 7th 8th.
If he was to walk today would we disintegrate ? Doubt it.
I have no doubt he's already told Kenwright behind closed doors but
remember WE also have something to do with the Club and have a right to know what he's doing seems even the players don't know .
It is not good for the Club - in my opinion.
If bloody Bayern Munich can have a manager in place half way through the season can't we expect something !!!
Sorry mate, he's acting as if he is the Club. Nobody is bigger than EFC hence my either put up or shut up !

He's staying - no doubt about that in my mind.

The journo has clearly asked him, about Neville leaving and whether Jags will be the man to take on the captaincy. Moyes has answered the only way he could without giving the game away.

He is staying but has to keep his contract unsigned to save face. If he signed now then it would tell the world that there were no better offers on the table. If he signs at the end of the season he can either say he's happy where the team is going - or he has unfinished business. Either way, his reputation is intact.

Apart from being our best player,he has blue blood in his veins. He isn't the quiet little mouse that people think he is.Bainsie for captain...No brainer.

Jags is the obvious choice - Baines is a great player but not a great leader. I honestly don't know how anyone can even question this one.

Just watch the defence and watch who does the talking. Jags is an outstanding defender and as consistent as anyone these days.

John, I genuinely think he is doing what he is doing because he wants to have success with and at Everton and is in a position to put some pressure on the board to try and make something happen. Surely that has to be a good thing?

I think if was genuinely sure he was leaving then he would tell us but he's not. For the meantime its business as usual which means having a club captain and I think Jags is the obvious and best choice.

Good point lads...I mean once Jags is annointed as "captain-in-waiting"...& Moyes leaves there's absolutely nothing a new manager can do...

You're quite right Brendan, he can make Victor the captain. I'd imagine Jagileka would be pissed off about it though. Why is a manager who might be at Newcastle or Stoke next year be calling any shots for Everton?

Don't think Jags would be the only one pissed off. As for your starter for 10...cos he won't be at Newcastle or Stoke...he'll be at Everton. Is there a prize?

I personally don't think Neville will start again. Let's see if he's on the bench on Saturday, if he isn't then clearly something happened after Wigan I'd suggest.

I don' understand why Leon Osman has not been touted for the captancy, afterall he has been, with Tont Hibbert our longest serving player and holds respect in the changing room. What are people's thought's regarding this?

Am I missing something here because I cant see the actual quote about Jags being the new captain. What was the question from the journo and how did Moyes answer it?

That's great Brendan, I'm out of smiley stickers for clueless idiots so I'm just going to have to say "that’s interesting" when we all know it isn't. If he's going to do the great favour of continuing to win fuck all at Everton then why doesn’t he commit to it?

Moyes offering Pip a coaching job at Everton, is that because he is not completely satisfied with Steve Round? The dugout would certainly become a lot more noisier and animated area with Pip around as Moyes assistant.
