Jagielka looking for a result at Anfield

, 30 April, 41comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton Captain Phil Jagielka is all too aware that Everton have not won at Anfield since 1999, a poor record Moyes has been unable to end. He is looking for the squad to perform the way they have for most of the season and come away with a result — and tiredness will be no excuse.

"No one knows what the manager is going to do at the end of the season, so if it is going to be his last game as Everton manager at Liverpool then it would be nice to send him off in style.

“But it's not just about him it's about the squad as well, and we'd all love to go there and perform the way we have for most of the season and come out on the right side.”

“There won't be too many changes to freshen things up, that's not the way our squad works but we'd like to think we've got the legs to do it.. We've got an extra day ahead of our next game, Gibbo should be back in contention after a little bit of stiffness.

“The manager will obviously get us to rest up and he'll be looking forward to the game just as much as we are because we'll be desperate to get a result at Anfield.”

They talk the talk but they don't walk the walk. Should be looking forward to this as it's one of our biggest games as it is with Moyes's abysmal record and last season's capitulation. I'm absolutely shitting myself — don't get me wrong, they're no great shakes at all — far from it. But that yard is jinxed for us. It's the proverbial graveyard.

No, I'm sorry but at half-one, I'll be switching the telly off, switching my phone off, but most importantly switching myself off and going out for a nice long walk, getting back about 3:20. I can't see anything but a defeat — sorry for being a pessimistic fucker... But that's just me.

Good. Baines didn't seem too bothered but Jags is. That's why Jags is skipper and Baines isn't

If we go there and perform the way we have for most of the season then we've got no chance.

He's said lets win it for Moyes, how about win it for the fans who have had ten years of ridicule about our shit record there even when we have had more men on the field.

After what happened in the last derby, I hope Mr Moyes gjves a warning to our strapping hardknock midfielder Osman not to go picking and bullying that meek and mild Mr Gerrard, cos we all know that, unless the cheating slimeball is going for goal, he dives as soon as he is tackled.

Doesn't make sense to me "If we go there and perform the way we have for most of the season then we've got no chance." I think we have performed very well this season apart from one or two games.

Get a 'RESULT'? Why don't you say a 'WIN' for God's sake ? Is that what Everton has become under Moyes after 11 years - the ambition for a derby game is to get a RESULT ?

Phil 111:

Agreed. I'm sure he does it to annoy. (You would imagine that the naysayers would wind their necks in during derby week and back the club, the manager and the team. Of course, you would be wrong.)

If they are not backing the team why do you think they go to matches, watch it from start to finish and feel the way they do about things???? Crikey you talk about people who have a different opinion as if they are RS fans. We are all in the same boat on one thing and that is that we are all Everton fans (except for that guy RS fan that comes on during our matches). Just because some fans don't like BK or Moyes doesn't mean they have it in for Everton FC.

Jackie:

I take your point BUT he always manages to twist some anodyne and uncontroversial comments into a lack of ambition, or defeatism, or whatever. It's pathetic.

Jackie Barry

I understand it's just that some try to turn a disliking of Moyes or BK into a dislike of Everton which annoys the heck out me.

Again I take your meaning. All I want is a bit of unity in this week of weeks.

Anyway, moving on: it will be fucking hilarious if we finish above that shower (after they spent £50 million in the summer and another £20 million in the January window). They could conceivably claim that one season above them is a fluke, which it wasn't, but two consecutive seasons?

We have to win end of. This is the worst Liverpool team in years and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference they put 6 past the worst Newcastle team in years, we should be beating them! Their best player is out and we should capitalise. Moyes owes us some derby pride after the Cup disaster

And from next season we can look forward to an un- biased derby match opinion from sky's Jamie carragher , redknapp , sourness then the highlights on bbc with Hansen and lawrenson. PS carragher now that you have joined murdochs sky empire are you gagged from slagging of the sun. You are a Hypocrite to take wages from this man.

Can't believe Sky have given a job to that squeaky voiced eejit Carragher. That will be Souness, Redknapp and now that annoying red twat.

What is it about ex-redshite and the media work they are offered?

They are like fecking rats - you are never more than 3 foot away from one of them.

My concern is that Mr Moyes will use the RS's win against a shockingly bad Barcodes to present the RS as a "great team" in fantastic form who will be virtually unbeatable in their own backyard.

Does any contributor seriously expect an attacking, win at all costs performance on Sunday?

Kevin, it is all to do with agents and media people, a great many dark side supporters work in the media and they all do an old pals act to get their faves foot in the door. Considering we have so many clubs in this country it beggars belief that so many ex reds manage to get jobs in the media. The list is endless and some of them can't even talk properly

Tony Hanlon, Kevin Tully, I live in South Africa and our "expert" is John Barnes. Legendary coach of Celtic and Tranmere, inventor of the 1-1-1-2-2-1-2-1 system (ask a Celtic fan).

Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious. Possibly the best newspaper headline ever.

John Barnes. Jamie Carragher, any ex RS, men of zero knowledge. Moenie worry nie, as they say here.

Sorry to go completely off topic, but is there any scenario which would see 6th place qualify for the Europa league?
Phil Sammon
29 Posted 30/04/2013 at 20:33:04
Brian

Bollocks!

I can't believe you're comparing that list to Liverpool's representatives. The two main television outlets for PL football are MOTD and Sky. We (and most other clubs) get the odd reporter 'round the grounds' while Liverpool get club legends Hansen, Lawro, Thompson, Souness, Redknapp and now Carragher all in prime time slots.

And I can't believe you mentioned Lineker - he has about as much affection for our club as your average RS fan.

I wouldn't mind if these were incredibly insightful people that the 'meejah' are hiring. You look at Gary Neville - some may hate him, but you can't argue that he doesn't stir a very interesting debate and his analysis is often eye opening.

I don't mind Souness actually. He's an arrogant tosser, but he tells it like it is.

The rest of them...they're a bunch of flaming idiots and Carragher will slot nicely onto the bottom of that list. His voice alone is enough to make me recoil.

One more on the panel to bleat about 'big club' Liverpool and talk about them as if they're still a CL team. Utter garbage. Seriously considering cancelling Sky...or at least the porn channels.

What about Keegan & Barnes as the resident pundits on ESPN?
Ian Bennett
31 Posted 30/04/2013 at 21:08:57
My assumption is that Liverpool will play the same side again, with Carragher starting ahead of Skertel.

If Gibson is fit i'd go with him and Fellaini in the middle, Osman on the right, with Vic and Mirallas up top. Vic needs to get on Agger and Mirallas on Carrager. It's not ideal but Osman has better chance up against Coutinho (Mirallas will not mark him) than in the middle, whilst it was give us pace up top. This seems simple to me, but tactically we always seem to put our big men toe to toe with their big men rather exploiting the advantage elsewhere.

Matt: ...is there any scenario which would see 6th place qualify for the Europa league?

None, Matt. The only way an extra EL place would be created would be for Chelsea if they were to win this year's final but not qualify for Europe any other way (which they will almost certainly do now by finishing in the top 5).

The twats....

Ian Smitham
35 Posted 30/04/2013 at 22:57:55
Lyndon, if they win it, but don't qualify for the CL, they defend it , in its own right and the Europa space goes to the next team down. If they get in the CL then that trumps the EL and so the place is lost.

Round figures, we need Chelsea to win the Europa and finish 5 TH with us 6 TH, assuming we want to get into the Europa. An advantage to that is that it improves our coefficient (no apologies, I do not know what it is or how to spell it ) for the following year when the top six go into the revamped CL

James Stewart
36 Posted 30/04/2013 at 23:42:58
@249 I think that is the way it will go in the future. The Europa makes less and less sense. A top 6 would appeal to the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Us, etc

"You would imagine that the naysayers would wind their necks in during derby week and back the club, the manager and the team. Of course, you would be wrong."

I don't really like your accusation Carl, that I am doing it to annoy. I also think that accusing me of wanting us to lose to get rid of Moyes is hurtful, nasty and uncalled for. You stick to your opinion, I'll stick to mine, and we'll both celebrate a win on Sunday!

Steve the dark side don't need to finish top of the fair play league if the teams above them qualify for Europe in their own right. I can't believe that UEFA think this is a satisfactory way of qualifying for Europe, but then again they don't want any of their cash-cows missing out on a place do they? As I have said previously it is a 'get out of jail free card' for those monied clubs who may be in transition or struggling to achieve a European spot on merit. It is the reason I believe why officials don't hand as many cards as they should do to those teams. After all a top 3 in the fair play league, which includes Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool cannot be pure coincidence can it?

Kev Johnson
39 Posted 01/05/2013 at 13:19:27
Patrick - sorry, but that is sheer paranoia. The Fair Play League is designed to reward those who... play fair. If any team finished above us in that league then fair play to them for, er, playing fair. I don't want Lpool to qualify either, but if they do by virtue of committing less fouls than us then you can't put it down to EUFA corruption.

Well it's good to know that someone cares about the derby - Jags' statement of intent means we won't concede 3 this time, but we sure as hell won't finish with 11 men.

Now if the other ten (and Moyes) could declare their intent to win at anfield that would be super smashing!

So, a result, eh??? Does he mean a draw or a win or either? Doesn't sound too confident by saying a result. Time to beat the pricks on their own turf!!
