Baines confident Blues can build on Moyes era

While admitting that David Moyes's move along the M62 will be a "massive loss" for Everton, Leighton Baines believes the Club can build on the foundation the Scot provided over the course of his 11-year tenure.

Though Moyes's contract at Manchester United doesn't officially start until 1st July, he is splitting his time between Goodison Park and Old Trafford and, having let go of Mike Phelan and United goalkeeping coach, Eric Steele, there may yet be more departures from Everton's coaching staff in the coming days. There is speculation that Moyes will bring Chris Woods and Jimmy Lumsden with him to Manchester.

Baines feels confident, though, that Everton can push on despite the disruption.

“It's a massive loss to lose the manager,” the England left back said. “It will be so strange the day we walk through the door and he's not there. But football clubs live on and we'll live on, we'll move on.

Like Marouane Fellaini, Baines has been linked with a move to United himself but his comments suggest his focus remains on Everton's future.

“We'll always remember what [Moyes] did for the club and where he's put us, but it's up to the rest of us, the people who remain and the people who come in, to take it forward now and build on the foundations he's worked hard to put in.”

Meanwhile, assistant manager, Steve Round, who is also a potential candidate to join Moyes at Old Trafford, says that the squad assembled by Moyes and the self-belief he has instilled over time in the team he built will stand the Blues in good stead.

“I think over the last two to three years that belief has steadily come through at Everton," Round said.

“It's not necessarily a case of defending for your lives, hanging in there and nicking the odd result by fortune and great defending, We're actually going in there and taking the game to the opposition and playing as well as the opposition are playing against us. It's great for the team moving forward into next season.”

The Telegraph seems to think Neville is going too. And Fellaini. I'll take that - some rebuilding money for Mr N Ew Manager.

Round sounds positvely shocked that EVERTON can play as well as the opposition.

Bye bye Stevie. Let's have a frst team coach who positvely expects it and more!

Why even put in the line;

"It's not necessarily a case of defending for your lives, hanging in there and nicking the odd result by fortune and great defending"?

Every time I hear a comment come out of Everton it's always laced with a tinge of negativity, or a reference to how bad we once were, and how lucky we are to be we are now.

The most important thing the new manager should do, is ban any hint of negativity what so ever. i.e that part of Rounds comment could easily have been left out. His comment could have said;

"This is a fantastic club with great history and big managers have left before. I know with the players we've got here we can challenge for trophies next season. We have a side capable of beating anyone. We always look to go out and win every game. That's the Everton way and it will remain so!!"

If we heared comments like that everyday for 11 years then fans, players and opposition might have more belief and respect for Everton. Results might get better, and our profile and image may improve. It's something we really need to work on as a club.

PR is massive in football now, we seem to overlook that

Alan #722 thank you.

I don't know how Brend #592 or Colin #664 read it but a statement like "We're actually going in there and taking the game to the opposition and playing as well as the opposition are playing against us." from someone who is employed to inspire our team to win is inexcusable. or is that not what the man actually said?

The final 2 paras taken together read on the positive side for me. I can't see any negativity in that.

But this is from the North Wales Daily Post so maybe they've mistranslated Round's statement in Welsh into English.

Alan Smith #722 "PR is massive in football now, we seem to overlook that"

Too bloody right. Like re-tweeting Man U news about changes in the backroom line up. Although Everton were quick to delete that tweet, plenty had time to do screen grabs.

BK has been dumbing down expectations ever since he took control. Whoever our next manager is, I'm sure it'll be more of the same.

I can't see how anybody could interpret "play as well as the opposition" as positive or inspiring. Is that really what we expect.

Has any motivatioanl speaker ever said that to an audience and got whoops and cheers and fists punched in the air before going out and doing their best?

It is mediocrity personified and I just hope whoever comes in to the back room has a better line in pre-match team talk than that.

This year we were only ten points off a Chamions League place. Bearing in mind all the draws that should have been wins things could have turned out a lot different. If the new manager can promote a more aggressive winning mentality then great things are possible. If only Jelavic had been finishing as he did in his first season we could have finished off a lot of the opposition we were dominating. Hopefully the new boss will be able to reinvigorate Jelavic and / or bring in a goalscorer. This was the major flaw with the team this year for me.

Sounds like Bainesy is staying put and up for the challenge. I know most footballers are mercenaries, but this lad is in the mould of great and loyal players of the past in my opinion. Unique in this day and age.

What we need is a good manager and assistant. Weir as assistant might be good. We need a manager shrewd in the transfer market and a good manager to get the best out of players.

Martin O'Neill used to be that man; not sure what happened to him recently though. Laudrup, my favourite, is a gamble. Pereira is a gamble, Martinez well the danger signs are already there, relegation will probably follow in a few years. The rest are just been there and one that type not really worth considering.

Moyes was a gamble; I never really thought much when he was appointed. So, if history is to repeat itself, it has to be a gamble with similar attributes to Moyes, I would probably go for Pereira but, then again, I have not met the bloke. From what I have read, he has similar attributes to Moyes with differences, he likes to attack a lot; this is easier said than done when you have the likes of Jelavic in your side.

Laudrup is my other favorite because the gamble would be good if we can get the likes of Michu, maybe Routledge, Williams etc. It's really difficult to judge what the chairman is going to do because no ideal candidate stands out.

The problem with all new managers, they want to run their new club as they see fit. Which is understandable. The problem is switching and changing at that point sort of breaks the present structure up and that could be a catastrophe for us. That's why I'm forever saying take on Neville as new coach. He knows us throughout, on and off the pitch. But who else does?

Phil Neville would make a good assistant, not sure we could gamble to the extent of him being manager.

The main thread indicates that Bainesy is staying put! Fuckin great news if it turns out to be true, which I've always believed to be the case. An old-fashioned, loyal footballer cut from a cloth long forgotten by the modern footballer, in an age of mercenaries and undeserving celebrities. What a man, individual and great player, a fuckin inspiration to the kids and adults alike.
