A breath of fresh air, says Super Kev

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell believes Roberto Martinez will have an immediate impact at the club.

"It will be fascinating. I think he'll be a breath of fresh air," he said. "The way he plays the game, the fans are going to like the style, and I think the players are going to improve, and that's really important.

"There will be a bit more attacking play. The players have done really well defensively and it won't harm the team to be a bit more expansive going forward. Everton have wonderfully gifted players and I think he will give them a new lease of life. It would be nice to see the team score more goals. The new manager can give them new ideas and I see it being a massive plus for Everton.

"Everton have to be looking at a Champions League spot, Under Martinez they can be a bit more expansive and score more goals and that will make them even more dangerous. Being tough to beat is ingrained in them, but scoring more goals could make a massive difference."

You mean taking the shackles off? God, half the team would get a nose bleed if they went past the half-way line. To be honest, we could give a few hidings out next season, and maybe get a few back... it's going to be interesting.

Its conceding them that worries me. However it will be nice to have something different and not have 11 men behind the ball on corners. It might also help the forwards who have been fairly isolated at times. The new era starts 4pm today. Good luck Roberto.

I think having played under Moyes, Kev will know what he is talking about.
When Moyes arrived, Kev started with Big Dunc, then Radsinski then ended up like every other Centre Forward, playing up front on his own. I think what he is saying is that Moyes was a ddefensive coach

'The players have done really well defensively and it won't harm the team to be a bit more expansive going forward'

I.e. actually start games aiming to win rather than first avoiding defeat.

Am really looking forward to next season. Can see Jelly getting back to his normal self and scoring at least 15 next season. CL will obviously be a big ask but at we start a season in hope finally!

Now we just need the fixture list to be a bit kind for the first 3-4 games so we can get some early wins under the belt and crack on from there.

COYB!!!!

3-5-2 system on its way?
Baines and Coleman on the wings, 2 up front - sounds exciting.
But will the defence be any better than was evident at Wigan - we can only hope so!
Fingers crossed for you Martinez, originally my third choice but now my only choice

I for one have the utmost respect for Super Kev whose goals kept us up and gave us our last Anfield win if I remember correctly. So I also give him plenty of credence in his views. Not necessarily logical but there you go. He's only saying what a lot of fans have said about Moyes tactics for the last ten years. Lets hope he's as correct in his views on RM.

Kevin lives in Manchester and socialises with the current players.
You can bet your bottom dollar what he is saying is what the payers have told him about Moyes style of safety first football.
When he said "the restrictions will be removed from some of the players"tells you all you need to know.

The key players wanted Martinez which is why despite all the paper talk he was the only man considered.

I hope you are right about the key players putting their weight behind Martinez. That means they have even more motivation to make things work out. There's nothing worse than having a new manager forced upon you who you don't see eye to eye with. I can't imagine Roberto is that hard to get along with and he has some really good professionals to work with, such as Jagielka< Osman and Baines. I bet Jelavic is rubbing his hands with glee thinking about playing as a striker again!

When Moyes was in charge we were all moaning about how cautious he was. Now we are all worried about how careless Martinez will be.

Also, listening to the press conference, my immediate thought was "He seems like another yes-man for BK". Especially the line about massive investment not being the key to breaking into the top four. Hope I am wrong.

Despite that I am excited, we needed change and we have certainly got one. Would love to know what the players think and what respect the dressing room will have.

Good luck, Martinez.

I realise it was a different time and different circumstances but Kenwright said after meeting Moyes for 30 secs he said 'your not gonna go down' and I can't help but feel that was the message he started every season with, the type of character he is.

Martinez however (according to Kenwright) after 45 secs said 'I'll get you into the champions league' this I hope is the difference between the the two mens characters, I want the players told your going to the champion league, your gonna be successful, your gonna win things, optimism and belief not pragmatism, safety first.

Just saw the interview, I want this lad to bring us success, you can't help but like the guy.

'Expansive style of play' 'remove the shackles' etc all sounds great. Problem is we don't have (and never will have) the very best players in the PL which you need if you want to play this style and consistently win in the PL.

To compensate for a lack of quality (relatively speaking) you have to be more tactical to get the results. Moyes was an expert at this which is why we finished 6th with a small squad. Martinez has demonstrably failed so far to understand this, let's hope he's learnt his lesson and starts to understand that you have to set you team up differently each week.

Andy,
You need the very best players if you want to play expansive football?
Got to disagree with you on that one mate.

Andy (#384) – It may be true we don't have the best players, well not all of them. But the 11 'best' players don't make the 'best' team... What we do have is the BEST TEAM and removing the shackles may just be the point of difference.

All bets are off, all labels redundant (until at least Christmas). We have got used to the long-term view of the long-term Moyes tenure.

Martinez must – and I think, baring a Mike Walker-esque start to the season (and maybe not even then) – be given a decent honeymoon to assess and remould the squad in his own image. It will take, as it did with Moyes, a number of seasons for some sections to become disenchanted. Let's not get too critical too early

Paul I am not saying you need to have the best players to just play expansive football, Wigan did exactly that last season. However if you want to play that style and win most weeks you do need the best players.

I do like RM, I just hope he has learnt from the mistakes he made when Wigan got relegated. I guess the ideal manager would be a combination of DM and RM!

Andy,

Given the choice between watching the mostly dire, drab, attritional football of the last 11 years and finishing 6th,or watching a good game of football every week with fast attacking players and finishing 8th I would take the latter every time.

I have criticised Moyes in the past so it's ironic that this year we've had some great games and good football played and he's left. I think Martinez can develop stylish football with the players he has. In Some games this year Everton were great. It's just that Moyes panics when we play well and get into the lead. I can only hope Martinez tells them to go and score another two or three rather than batton down the hatches when were one up after 5 mins!
