Alan Myers to return as Communications Director

Everton have announced that Alan Myers will return to the club as the new Communications Director in August following Paul Tyrrell's departure last month.

Since leaving the role of press officer at Goodison in 2001, Myers has been working as North West Bureau Chief for Sky Sports News.

The lifelong Blue broke the news of his appointment on Twitter this afternoon, expressing his delight at being back in "the only place I want to be," and was also quoted in an announcement on evertonfc.com:

"To say I am thrilled to return to Everton is a huge understatement, the Football Club is a massive part of my life and I am honoured to be part of such a great team both on and off the field.

"I cannot wait to get started and take up what will be a huge challenge but one I am absolutely relishing. It will be good to return to see a few old faces alongside some new ones!

"There is lots of work to undertake in the short, medium and long term and one of my first priorities will be to work with our fanbase directly on the 2014/15 Club Crest.

"As our fans know, our Chief Executive has said that the next crest will be developed by Evertonians for Evertonians and I am confident we will be able to achieve that goal together.”

I've seen him speak on SSN a few times and he seems right enough. Nice to see him immediately address the badge issue as well.

Obviously, as a mouthpiece for a laughing stock boardroom, he will become slowly hated until he is finally chased out of the club and replaced by Kenwright's next lackie.

Hmmm, wait till the club find out he was at the recent BU meeting....
Ok it was in an official capacity, and he did leave as Neville started talking - they tried to film it but you wouldn't have got any clips out of Nev's "true blue" delivery!

Experienced, knows the club, knows the media, knows the fans and is a fan not that the latter should matter. Looking forward to reading the list of issues others may have.

Comes over well on SSN and looks like he could "take" Kenwright if it all kicks off.

Thumbs up from me.

As least he isn't an RS like Paul "Pot" Tyrell.

Always comes across as a genuinely nice guy and a passionate evertonian. So that's the opposite of the last two incumbents! Good luck to him and let's hope it signifies a positive change in attitude from the club.

Yes seems a normal nice fella when I've seen him on telly. Good news. Now if we could just sign Ronaldo it would be a perfect summer!

I`ve been overseas for a while but have Everton changed their name as well as their badge whilst I`ve been away?

Everybody from Bob Martin to this bloke seems to think we are now `THE FOOTBALL CLUB`

We are EVERTON!.......and bloody proud of it!

Jay, my bad. So who was the Sky reporter that interviewed Nev before the meeting started? Been away most of the last 10 years, so not a regular watcher of Sky.

I am actually more excited about this appointment than I was about the new manager (don't worry, I have come around to the idea of RM now and am starting to fizz on that too). Then I saw the fixture list and was surprised that there weren't batches of tough games clogged together with the usual 'Everton can play the promoted teams in the first fortnight to get caught out' scenario.

We haven't even signed a player yet and I am starting to feel excited by the coming season. I think I either need a long lie down or to go and get some serious meds as I don't think I can last until the Cardiff game week three for reality (and the obligatory associated depression) to kick in.

Back to the point, looks to me to be a fantastic appointment and the board may be starting to employ common sense when they, erm, employ people representing Everton (i.e. the Football Club - Phil 643 - ahem)

It's a fact Myers was banned from getting FA Cup final tickets after 1995. It was all over the Echo at the time..

The man wouldn't even deny it himself. Our fanzines used to take the piss out of him over it (referring to him as Alan 'any spares' Myers etc).

What's 'good' about it? What's good about the club needing a director specifically employed to control communications?

His job is to spin bad publicity and to cover up our boards blunders, whether he supports Everton or Liverpool is largely irrelevent except that he might be more keen to cover Bill's arse if the shit really hit the fan rather than telling him to do one or even exposing his ineptitude..

..come to think of it a 'red agent' as a Communications Director might be exactly what the doctor ordered to prompt the necessary changes in our disfunctional organisation.

Nothing will change.
There's no way Kenwright would appoint anyone who will not follow the Company line.
Blue or not he will be just another monkey to the organ grinder

Just for clarity, Alan Myers wasn't present at The Blue Unions recent meeting held at the Casa. It was in fact Alan Irwin who covered the meeting on behalf of Sky. I'm not aware of Alan (Myers) ever attending or reporting any of our activities.

Most supporters seem pleased with his appointment and he has made the right noises via his Twitter account. Personally, I have always found him approachable, knowledgeable and passionate about our beloved Club.

However, none of this will matter one iota if he has to work within the same constraints and has the same remit of his predecessors, Ian Ross and Paul Tyrrell. Both of whom alienated large sections of our support with their divide and conquer strategy, leaving many fans feeling disillusioned and disenfranchised.

The season ahead will be yet another watershed in our long history, for so different reasons. New Manager, new Captain, new Badge (ahem) and now Director of Communications. Maybe this season will also be the season when the change all Blues want, the 24/7 search for investment, will finally come to fruition.

However, the greatest change that Club could implement would be to end the Blacklisting of Fans and Fan groups. End the plotting and scheming against your greatest asset, us the fans.

No pressure there then, Alan. Jaw jaw not war war. I for one will be watching with interest. After all... Football without Fans is Nothing.
