Great read Lyndon....Everton aren't beaten until they are beaten. It wont be difficult to attract some decent players for injury cover if the club goes into the new year in the top four.

We can dare to dream....

I think we need to start getting Jelavic involved so he's match fit – we're going to need him with the amount if games we has coming up.

It's a measure of how far we have come that, after a 4 -1 home win, we are not quite satisfied as we did not win with flair and elan, the way we have become accustomed to doing under Martinez.

My wife came to her first game yesterday and loved the experience! She commented that she was surprised at the lack of atmosphere and I think yesterday was one of those games where the crowd and the players go through the motions a bit as a long year draws to a close!

That very difficult spell with Fulham in control of play reminded me of some bad days both during and before Moyes reign BUT what we do seem to have now is sheer self-belief and a certain amount of competency going forward that gets us through. It's a good sign when you play well and score 1 and play badly and score 3!

January signings will be critical and will need to bed in quickly. As I've hinted on another thread, RM should pull out all the stops and bring in Landon Donovan. Ideal cover for Deulofeu's absence.

Just read on the web that some team, based near Oldham I think it was, are interested in Ross Barkley. Mansoor ot Manure or something or other.

Can someone enlighten me? I don't look that far down the table.

Steve. I'll be surprised if Donovan goes anywhere. After giving himself time off to recover from mental and physical exhaustion, he missed the first 3 World Cup qualifiers, causing Klinsmann to blast him to high heaven. Galaxy were also annoyed.

Donovan would be a decent stand in to cover Geri (for the del boy haters). Loving the football we are playing as well as all the tactical changes Roberto employs during games. We don't just have a Plan A but a Plan B, C, D and E as well.

Just watching Carragher, Gerrard and Souness discussing the top 4 places this season – not one of them had the good grace to mention the team currently in 4th place.

Is it any wonder we are called bitter? I hope they get twatted today. Horrible bastards.

Harold

I have just logged on to say the exact same thing mate. It's unbelievable.

Can you ever imagine an all-Spurs line-up like that? Or all-Everton? It just wouldn't happen with any other club. I'm surprised they haven't got Redknapp sitting on the end too.

That's it, I'm putting £10 on a Spurs win.

Kevin, turn the volume right down. I've been doing it for years.

When we take over the world and they finally give us the sort of over the top and pointless attention they reserve the rest of the sky darlings, then they can still go eat themselves. Punditry is the biggest pile of shite on tv, like white noise or a tory party election broadcast set on repeat.... and when we're beating Barca it will still be the biggest pile of shite on tv.

Colin, I hope you're right. But Suarez - who's just scored - could single-handedly ruin our chance of a CL place. I hope his had is turned by Real or somebody making loud noises. Either that or he gets injured. He is imo the most influential player in the Premier League. Without him RS would be no threat at all.

I'm as biased as they come, but Soldado went straight through the 'keeper's back. It was never 'shoulder to shoulder'.

FFS Spurs, I was hoping they would get at least a point - teams seem to lay down when faced with the dark side, yet when they face us they play as if their very lives depend on it. On the plus side we'll be at the very least in fifth place going into the holidays.

See I am from the old days when stuff like that would have been allowed, it was all down to the keeper inability to control the ball, his mistake, so he should pay.
Si Cooper
26 Posted 15/12/2013 at 16:56:56
The RS are simply bypassing the Spurs midfield and terrorizing their poor defence. Citeh had the midfield to simply dominate the middle of the pitch. Either way, take their midfielders out of the equation and Spurs are very ordinary.

Agree with Phil. Soldado was still behind the keeper so it was a foul. Refs aren't consistent on this type of challenge anyway, but a keeper will get the decision vast majority of the time.

Watch how all the talk from tomorrow onwards (if the dark side win which seems likely) will be about the five-way race for the title between Chelsea, City, Dark Side, Arsenal and United and we will be ignored as per usual. God I wish there was a way we could win the PL this season it would really pee them all off.

This game has shown just how good we might actually be... We might have been too nervous of Spurs when we took them on... I think if we played them now I would expect a win and more so to dominate...

We were every bit as good as Liverpool when we played them....

This is why it doesn't help to bring in 10 odd players like Spurs did over the summer, you cannot expect a team to achieve anything if you blood in that many signings in one go, in that respect I like the way we go about our business, bring in one or two players every window and adding to it.
Brian Denton
32 Posted 15/12/2013 at 17:13:50
Patrick (707), unfortunately fairy tales don't come true. But I couldn't agree with you more. Until we are four points clear with one game to play we will not be mentioned as potential champions.

Why are people chucking United into the mix again. They beat a poor Villa side and are 10 points off Arsenal and two behind Spurs?

Are people expecting them to have a much better second half of the season just because they have done before?

Watching Spurs here and can see why they are gash, everything is direct, rushed forward and played at 100 mph, the amount of times they have turned over possession playing like this is ridiculous. I can now see why we play the way we do under Martinez, If its not on going forward go back don't take the risk of losing possession, control the tempo of the game and stretch the opposition. Teams can't press the ball for 90 minutes against this and become demoralised. Can't wait to see us become better and better with this philosophy.

I cannot believe that supporters of Everton are actually watching the Liverpool game and commentating it on TW.

Yesterday's game showed that come January with suspensions or injuries and rumors that both Heitinga and Jelavic will ask for a move our options without more players will look pretty grim.

As we are going to rely on BK and his board to supply some finance I do not think we should go for players like Donovan but bring in proven younger players who are going to stay at the club.

As it has been stated before Everton so far have given the club a solid platform to build on but require more proven players to continue.

Going on past experiences BK and the board have failed us miserably
but hopefully even they can see what an opportunity they have to move both the team and most of all Everton Football Club forward.

In regards to my opening statement I live in Canada and the Liverpool game is on TV but I went outside to clear snow.

Agree with all the points made above re: Spurs.

A truly awful, disjointed and expensively assembled bunch of foreign mercenaries. AVB should be in trouble after this.

All credit to the dark side though, they have ran their socks off from the first minute.

I would say we can discount Spurs from the top 4 race after this showing - no excuse for that type of effort on your home turf. Motivation issues, and that comes from the manager.

Patrick, it would do me if we do keep getting ignored for the time being. Creeping further up the table with everybody ignoring us. They did it on Motd again last night. They mentioned 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams and also that Liverpool could go back into the top 4 if they beat Spurs. No mention of that little team who was in 4th.
Si Cooper
43 Posted 15/12/2013 at 17:38:08
You look at the likes of Sandro, Dembele and Paulinho and add some more pace and trickiness from Holtby, Townsend and Lennon and you would expect something quite special. The reality is that the whole is actually less than the sum of the parts. Their central defenders are (and have been for a while) distinctly average and obviously susceptible to pace.

I am actually not sure that simply holding the ball and patiently waiting for a chance to appear is the way to beat Spurs (and may be why we struggled against them); The RS have shown a way to do it, move it quickly from back to front as often as you can.

45 Posted 15/12/2013 at 17:40:48
The biggest danger to us and a Champions League spot is ourselves. We tend to hit the self-destruct button when we get near top of the league. But with our new attitude under Roberto, of "score one and go for number two", I don’t see it happening. Roberto will add a couple of gems in January and we will kick on.

Obviously we will have a couple of blips along the way but this year who isn’t? We are only 4s now for a top four spot — even the bookies are not taking any chances. Keep it up, lads, and do the club proud. We are all behind you, no manager or player divisions amongst the fans this year, which can only help more.

Colin Glassar

Think that could be it for AVB. They were shite even when they had 11 men today. Turning off now before they go to the Sky Studio AKA "LFC TV". The bias towards Liverpool today is the worst I have ever seen. Can't wait to tonk the bastards in January.
Patrick Murphy

There's no way AVB can survive this - two really heavy defeats against teams they are expected to compete against and the rest of the season made up with mostly fortunate scrappy wins. I have a horrible horrible feeling that our neigbours are going to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy at Hillsbrough with their first PL title win.

Usual squealing rolling about from Ratboy to get the Spurs player sent off. Light tap to the ribs and it's theatrics all over. I do taekwondo (1st Dan) and know just what happens when you get kicked - and they mean it - and it's nothing like what we see from Suarez.

I don't understand why one of these players who gets sent off doesn't say "Fair enough", and then jump on his leg.

Colin Glassar
51 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:00:03
AVB has to go after this. I know he lost Bale but he was replaced with £100m worth of talent. Can you imagine what we could do with £100m? Levy should go as well, as despite all the money spent he's never been able to appoint the most important member of staff...... The right manager.
Charles Brewer
52 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:03:28
Spurs looked like relegation material today. Every match seems to show how good our new manager is.

There is something very surreal about the Premier League this year. Spurs get battered repeatedly and are just 4 points behind us, we never lose, and either beat or run rings round the best in the league and never go up the table, the RS seem to lose every other match and jump three or four positions in an afternoon and are now second.

Getting back to Everton...

Fulham’s second-half performance came as no great surprise: there has been unrest in their dressing room, but they have some talented players and, under a new manager, they were always going to be a difficult hurdle to get over.

You often hear of top sides "finding a way" when it’s not going according to plan. You can’t play dazzling football every time, the league is too demanding, but we found a way and yesterday’s result was every bit as satisfying as anything else we have done this season.

Not sure my liver is up to this...

Charles Brewer
59 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:13:25
Souness evidently knows absolutely nothing about football. He was a disgusting talentless thug on the pitch (in other words, an archetypical Liverpool hero), and a near-incomprehensible moron off it.

Of course, not quite as incomprehensible as Dogleash. ("Ayyzz kukuminaheed, anafrayedmarrzbarenbottr")

Charles Brewer

Paul, he was from the same school as Case, Yeats, Hughes, Gerrard and Tommy Smith. His main tactic was the violent and dangerous tackle from behind in the first few minutes which tended to intimidate opponents who knew that playing well in that particular match wasn't worth their career.

The Liverpool way has always been the cowardly attack from behind (Suarez on Distin and Miralles epitomised it last year), or on a player lying on the ground (Gerrard's speciality).

I would not argue abount Souness's effectiveness in an era of low standards and easily intimidated refereeing, but I think today he would be off after 10 minutes or be run ragged by the likes of Barkley.

Charles Brewer
65 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:29:47
To be fair, Suarez doesn't lie down that easily as he is far too busy rolling over and over and faking injury in an attempt to get whoever tackled him sent off.
Colin Glassar
66 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:30:59
Charles, I hate most Liverpool players, past and present, but that doesn't mean I can't recognise talent when I see it. Suarez, Souness, Alonso, Gerrard, Callaghan etc.....could all dish it out but they could play as well. Their only real talentless thug, IMO, was Tommy Smith. A horrible, ugly, bone breaker.
Christopher Timmins
69 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:35:36
January transfer window will tell the tale. After the transactions of the last window we must have money to spend and imo we need the following: wide right midfielder, centre forward, someone who is not on loan and who will replace Lukaku at the end of the season as he must surely be heading back to London and a replacement for Baines if he heads up the east Lancs Road.

Kenwright failed us last January if he were to do so again this January it would be tragic!

Charles Brewer

Colin, I remember going to a Derby match with my then girlfriend, now wife. It was when there were cages round the pitch (the first time I ever saw those I knew one day there would be many deaths and people would be crushed - I thought it would be a fire that caused it).

Anyway, some boys, ages, I would guess about 8-10, were at the front and hanging off the bars and shouting at Case during the warm up. He hammered the ball at them and got one kid's hands. I was next to a very decent Liverpool supporter who was absolutely horrified.

It was deliberate, brutal, disgusting and, in my view, summed up that club.

Alonso and Callaghan were decent enough players, I don't really mind Skrtel these days, and they also had one of my favourite players (as a man), John Barnes, even Bignose was an acceptable person. But for the rest, I regard them as I regard Maradona, a man so deeply flawed that any talent is outweighed by his personal foulness.

Dan Heaton
71 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:44:12
Why could Sky not find an ex Spurs player to come into the studio to try and even things out. The game was in London after all. Total bollocks.
Keith Glazzard
72 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:33:33
Charles - I agree with you about the injury/rolling thing. He, of course, did exactly the same thing to get Rodwell sent off a couple of years back. Why on earth haven't refs worked this out? Daft question I suppose.

One suggestion might be to let refs decide how long a player who 'has' to receive treatment should stay off the pitch to recover, depending on how many rolls he makes. 3 mins for one, seven for 2 and 15 for the full 'Triple Suarez'.

Dan Heaton
73 Posted 15/12/2013 at 18:56:32
Regarding money for January... Where do you think the extra £20 million TV money went for this season? Norwich, Cardiff and Southampton seemed to spend enough of it.

By my count, we made around £12 million from transfers in the summer (not including whatever loan fees we paid). Our biggest wage earner also left, Martinez is on half of what Moyes was on, and Ireland are paying Gibson's wages. Can't think of anymore savings to boost our kitty.

Iain Johnston
74 Posted 16/12/2013 at 18:50:20
Dan, I think we must consider the fact than Everton are paying the bulk of Barry's wages, this alone covers what we paid to Fellaini and the £25k we save from OFMs departure.

Currently Heitinga is on £90k and unfortunately can't see him going now that Gibson is out all season and Geri is injured. I think having Barry sign a pre-contract agreement for £50k pw is realistic also McGeady for the same.

I also wouldn't mind sneaky bids for Siggurssen and Dembele, both can play comfortably on the ball and have an eye for goal. Get in now while Spurs are all over the place and want to recoup some of the £115m they've spent. Also having another Belgian may just tip our hand for Lukaku.

I'd leave signing a top class striker until the summer. RM will obviously be off to the WC and can scout them first hand.

Ian Bennett
75 Posted 16/12/2013 at 20:03:31
No way on earth is Heitinga on £90k. Fellaini was our top earner at £75k. The talk at the ground was what Barkley was going to get in his new deal. Anyone else hear it?

First visit to Goodison for many years for the Fulham game. My son asked if I had ever seen my team score 4 goals before.
I thought not but then remembered we scored 4 at Spurs in the fifties with Jimmy Harris scoring a hat trick. Trouble was they got 10!
