From Howard Kendall's autobiography: "There had been no hint whatsoever that Everton were interested in buying me. Not a whisper. It emerged later that Bill Shankly was so infuriated by this transfer coup and Liverpool’s inability to sign me that he resigned his post as Liverpool manager, a demand that was rejected by the club."
