Lukaku aiming for a big season

Romelu Lukaku says that making his season-long loan switch to Everton was a natural step for a player who wants to perform week, in week out, one that he feels is the "last step" he needs in his bid to become one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

While Evertonians are no doubt hoping that he falls sufficiently in love with Goodison that pushes to stay next summer, Lukaku is aiming to send a message to Jose Mourinho this season after the Chelsea boss allowed him to go out on another loan spell.

The 6' 3" Belgian joined the Blues on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day at a time when many Chelsea fans expected he would be a strong contender for the starting role at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku is unfazed, though, and feels that he has a point to prove: "After last year I felt I deserved a chance, as I did the season before going to West Brom. I went to West Brom and did well. I have a point to prove to myself and to Chelsea to show that I can be No1.

"I'm not as frustrated as I was when I was younger. The most important thing is to do well for this club and establish myself as quickly as possible. There has been big respect from Everton, they made a big effort for me and have helped me and my family settle in quickly, and I want to help them.

"I think this was the last step that I needed," he continued. "As a young player, you want to perform week in, week out and I thought the best solution was to come to Everton."

The 20 year-old has been welcomed with open arms at Everton by supporters and staff alike and he even declared before last Saturday's match that he wanted the Blues to Chelsea, which they went on to do by a single Steven Naismith goal.

"Everton is a good team with experienced players and it's a team who are always around the top six," he told reporters at a press conference earlier today.

"The players' quality is very high and what I expected. Technically the majority of the players are very strong, there is a good mentality as everyone wants to work hard and everyone wants to win. That's what keeps us going.

"We have a big squad and a lot of players who can do a lot of damage in this league, so they are expecting a lot of things.

"I'm very focused, I'm grounded and I know what to do to be successful, so I'm ready."

Lukaku was ineligible to face his parent club last Saturday but he is in contention to make his first appearance for Everton when the Blues visit West Ham this coming weekend.
