Everton prevail to knock out Swansea

Everton 3 - 1 Swansea City
Everton booked passage to the quarter finals of the FA Cup for the third successive season but they had a couple of lapses from Swansea City to thank for turning the tie their way.

Lacina Traoré made his debut for the Blues and took less than four minutes to mark his first game with a goal, flicking home from close range following determined work from Sylvain Distin from a Leighton Baines free kick.

Swansea, who had spurned a gilt-edged chance to score even earlier when Vasquez was put clean through but he allowed himself to be forced wide by Joel Robles, never looked out of the tie while Everton were allowing them so much space and Garry Monk's side were level just 11 minutes later.

Taylor's cross from the left just eluded Distin and Jonathan de Guzman stole in front of Baines to power a header past Robles.

The home side remained the more dangerous of the two as the first half wore on, though, and Steven Pienaar almost capped a wonderful move with an equally good goal but his shot came off the woodwork.

Kevin Mirallas, meanwhile, should have done better with Seamus Coleman's precise cross but fired wide of the far post and also saw Gerhard Tremmel push away a 20-yard free kick.

Everton appeared curiously lacking in killer instinct in the second half and the increasing apprehension in the home crowd wasn't eased when Pienaar planted a free header wide of the back post off another well-placed Coleman centre.

A minute later, though, they were gifted a goal and the momentum from which to win the game. An ill-advised back-pass by Neil Taylor was pounced on by substitute Steven Naismith and the Scot slid the ball past the on-rushing 'keeper and inside the far post to notch his fourth goal in five games.

And the Scot was involved again seven minutes later when he was tripped by Ashley Richards in the visitors' area giving referee Kevin Friend no option but to award a penalty and Baines expertly converted to make it 3-1 and effectively put the game to bed.

Swansea's fire had been well and truly put out by this point and the fact that Naismith had to go off for the last few minutes with suspected concussion following a collision leaving Everton to finish the contest with 10 men proved academic.

The Blues were paired with Arsenal or Liverpool in the draw for the sixth round after the match, with a date at The Emirates confirmed when the Gunners beat the reds 2-1 in the later afternoon game in London.
