Everton have confirmed that out-of-contract striker Apostolos Vellios has left the club after three years at Goodison Park.

The 23 year-old struggled to make the breakthrough back into the first team squad after a promising start to life with the Blues in the 2011-12 season and did not figure for the senior squad this season at all under Roberto Martinez.

"I think it's been a disappointing season for himself but he's always had a terrific attitude and always a real desire to try to work hard for the team," Martinez told evertontv.

"He's probably in a position now where, at a very young age still, he needs a new challenge and a new environment to show what he can do.

"We wish him well and I'm sure every Evertonian will follow me with that."

Academy goalkeeper Mason Springthorpe has also been released by Everton after his own contract expired.
