Duffy is ready to 'push on'

Shane Duffy says that he is ready to take the next step in his career following his experience at Yeovil Town where he spent last season on loan.

The 22 year-old, who has been included in the Republic of Ireland's squad for their upcoming friendlies against Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal, says that his time with the Glovers was a challenging, intense but rewarding experience that he feels has made him a better player.

Yeovil were unable to preserve their status in the Championship and were relegated to League One with a game left in the season but Duffy is able to take the many positives for him personally from his time there.

“It was a good challenge for me and I enjoyed having to defend so much," he told evertontv. "It was just disappointing that we ended up going down, but I really enjoyed it and hopefully it will stand me in good stead for the future.

“I was gutted for the lads because they put so much effort in. With me going back [to Everton] it was a different feeling compared to them.

“Every point was a good point. It was an experience I have never been in before. It was so intense — you were looking out for results every week after your match.”

Duffy's next challenge is to reintegrate back into the Everton setup at Finch Farm and use pre-season with the Blues to assess his next move.

The defender was a mainstay in Yeovil's defence this past season but has found first-team chances limited due to his youth, relative inexperience and the presence of the likes of Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in front of him at Goodison.

It is clear from public comments he has made recently that he would love to make the breakthrough at Everton but he is pragmatic about the situation, saying that he might need to undertake another loan or find a permanent move elsewhere to keep playing regularly.

“I will have to sit down with the manager and see what he wants for me and what I need to do to push on here or push on somewhere else. Hopefully it is here,” Duffy continued.

“I will take my rest this summer, keep working hard and see what next season brings.”
