Reports: Atsu on the verge of Everton loan

, 1 August, 96comments  |  Jump to most recent

Everton are believed to be very close to completing the acquisition on loan of Ghanaian international Christian Atsu from Chelsea.

The 22 year-old, who spent last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and played in all three of his country's matches at the World Cup in Brazil this summer, has reportedly agreed in principal to make a season-long switch to Goodison Park.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Everton will have an option to purchase Atsu, whom the West London club signed FC Porto last year, for £6.5m next summer.

Speculation linking the winger with the Blues has been mounting over the past 48 hours as Roberto Martinez continues his squad-strengthening efforts following the confirmation of deals this week for Muhamed Besic and Romelu Lukaku.

This would be a good move giving us the numbers and the quality we need in the wide areas. I think another striker would be a good idea. I would be very surprised if Traore didn't come on loan again after sticking it out last season during his injury. I'm convinced that load was already planned, though why it hasn't been sealed yet does give me a few doubts.

There are some rumours that there could be a 6.5m clause to make it permanent at the end of the season, would be a great bit of business IMO.

Choosing us before Villa and Sunderland. That must have been a tough call. We need more loans otherwise we'll have to change the Roberto had a dream' song.

Can't wait for the new season. We fear no one.

It would be great if Roberto was thinking of someone less injury prone than Traore. I would love Remy or Hernandez. I would also appreciate confirmation from Roberto that McCarthy is going nowhere.

I am really looking forward to this player joining us for a year, at least, I do hope they have included the clause with an option to buy @ £ X M !

That way, we are covered against, ridiculous demands should he prove to be a success !

Should it go the other way, and he does not set us alight, we can simply let him return!

I know it sounds idealistic, but unless we gain CL qualification this year, we will also be forever trying to catch the media favourites, and thus have a major disadvantage, trying to compete financially for players who will benefit us !

I really hope we can break the mold this season, and lock horns with the so called big boys, and come out as victors !

At least one derby win at home and a draw or win away is long overdue !

This is the type of option we need, a bit of blistering pace. IÂ’m really happy with the current squad set-up but the pure speed and pace is probably not really there.

A glance on YouTube would show you what this kid has; I hope it happens..."Cherry on the icing on the cake!"

Atsu looks very fast and tricky, just the sort of player who has caused us trouble in the past! Reminds me of Boasie in his directness and pace. He can play on either wing so I just hope he can adjust to playing in the Premier League. We still need a top playmaker though to complete the equation as any striker requires top class ammunition.

What is happening with David Henen and Brendan Galloway? Can we only do one deal at a time or are some of those mentioned in the press possibly only back-ups in case other deals fall through?

Always good to have a range of attacking options to choose from and I expect this lad will at least be an impact player from the bench, much as Geri was last season. I think this effectively puts us on par, in terms of ability, as the best we had last season, and Besic plus any further additions potentially puts us ahead.

Kevin Tully
10 Posted 01/08/2014 at 15:58:16
Very surprised Mourinho would help us to strengthen even further by loaning us the lad. He clearly doesn't view us as a serious threat up to now, but he may be in for a hell of a shock - along with the rest of the the league!

It may sound a little harsh, but I don't think some of the old guard have the mentality to go to the likes of Analfied and play to win. The more new faces the better, as far as I am concerned.

Liking what's happening right now but am a bit worried that everyone's a bit too nice! Nearly all our players are 'nice guys' but you need some nastiness and bad losers amongst the group. Only KM and maybe Barry have a bit of that in them so I'm hoping that Besic helps with that and big Dunc can have some much needed influence.

I think, as an Evertonian, patience and tryst is a good virtue right now. It's hard to say that, given the last ten years but I truly feel we have turned a corner. I am just quietly watching what unfolds in the next few weeks of the transfer window. I love the transfer speculation, but it is just that. I like the way RM conducts his business. Quiet, confident and he seems to get his targets. I think the coming season is another building one and we will really see the team develop into a real threat over the next two or three seasons. Having said that, I hope we can add a piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet this season, but I won't be too disheartened if we don't. Well done, RM and his team. I am really looking forward to the journey you are taking us on.

Like the look of this lad. Quick, good technique and intelligent. Hopefully similar to Deulofeu but with a touch more end product. Mirallas, Mcgeady, Pienaar and Atsu for the wide berths looks pretty decent with all of them bringing different assets to the table.

ps
Our fastest player next season likely to be....Mohamed Besic. The lad is rapid.

Kevin (10), the loan of Atsu from Mourinho makes even more sense than the sale of Lukaku, since Atsu couldn't play vs. Chelsea. If Chelsea finish 1st and Everton finish 3rd, let's be honest, both clubs will be happy. That will still leave Chelski four titles behind us over our histories; they haven't even caught up with Sunderland and Aston Villa yet. We can settle accounts with them in future seasons.

Right up till last night there were 10 clubs in for this lad but his mind is set on Everton. Like half a dozen other members of our squad, he has a tremendous fighting attitude. Will battle like mad and get the ball across.

We've come a long way in 12 months. Can't begin to imagine how we will look 2 years from now. Hope I'll be around to see it.

James (18), Barca have Adama Traore who has been mooted as a possible loan signing for us but they've got a couple of injury concerns in addition to Suarez being out and I've seen it suggested that they will be holding on to what they've got for now, at least until the end of the month.
Paul Ellam

Be chuffed if we get him. Weren't we after him a season or two ago but lost out to Porto or Chelsea?
Wouldn't harm to keep friendly relations with Barcelona going. We could even try for pre-season friendlies against them in future. Imagine that, Barcelona at Goodison instead of Porto!

I'd say this is the replacement for Deulofeu. Showed blazing speed in the World Cup games, although the quality was sometimes lacking, particularly against the US. But the talent is obvious -- his nickname among the Ghanaians is "Messi".
Andrew Ellams
27 Posted 01/08/2014 at 16:49:41
At times during the World Cup his pace left his team mates behind and he had nobody to cross to when he got into position. Overall, he is similar to Deulofeu, maybe a bit further on in his development, but not quite there yet. Hopefully he will be... over the course of this season.

Quite excited about a pacy wide man but concerned about his ability at the same time. Time and again in the World Cup he picked up the ball, cut in side, skinned a couple and then put the ball somewhere in the middle of the rainforest. Extra shooting drills for this chap me thinks

I'm usually a negative "poster" & I'm delighted to say I've not posted since Valdemort. ( he who shall not be named ).
I LOVE Bobby & the amazing team we're assembling. I LOVE the vibe around everything EFC right now... But I'm concerned by our ever growing friendship with Chelsea. Convenient payment plans, players on loan, funny handshakes... Is it just me ( or a natural blues pessimism, not to feel comfortable with endless happy days ) but is anyone scared we've agreed some sort of Barkley deal on the side in the future? Why are they being nice, what's the catch?

Steve Kidd #32, yep, I saw the same thing... thus my comment about the lack of quality. But he's never played in top-level competition (Vitesse ain't exactly Barca), and he's never had top-level coaching. It would be exciting to see what kind of progress such an explosive talent could make under Roberto's tutelage..

I like McGeady. Can make space and cross the ball with both feet. I don't fancy another season of watching Baines trying to take a corner. The ball either hits the first defender or comes down with snow on. Don't we have anyone who can whip them over at speed a la Oscar, Stevie me, Rooney, Ashley Young and many more. Who gives him permission to take all these hopeless corners? A whole season of countless corners and not one goal. It is almost unbelievable. To make matters worse, our rivals see them as good goalscoring opportunities.
Paul Thompson
40 Posted 01/08/2014 at 18:17:54
If this guy signs, he'll be a 'replacement' for Deulofeu - there would be little point in having both given their similarity. I know he was frustrating at the World Cup, but his You Tube clips show that he can cross and shoot to add to the speed. An exciting prospect, particularly if we have an option to sign at then end of the loan.

I think this would be a really good deal as the boy is a talent! And if we have agreed a £6.5m fee if we want to make the deal permanent then even better cos he is going to be a player.

Quick, direct and got a trick in his locker, heÂ’s exactly the type of winger Martinez likes to have in his squad, a player that can eliminate players out of the game with a turn of pace or a trick or 2. HeÂ’ll be a fine asset over the course of the season.

I do think the only permanent signings we make from now on will be the likes of Henen & Galloway on cheapest deals and then I think weÂ’ll look to sign Traore back on loan to add competition for places upfront.

If we sign all thatÂ’s mentioned above, along with the signings of Barry, Besic, Lukaku and the new deals for the likes of Coleman & Barkley, then weÂ’ve done really well this summer by our standards, really well!

Brent Stephens

Alan, I think we should check Colin's posts to see how often he uses the "phenomenal" word.

James, all the man u leads have gone very cold. Kagawa looks like he might go back to Germany, Hernandez to Spain, Cleverley looks like he might stay and Ashley Young, well, nobody wants him. Still a month to go though so things could change. Unlike Jose, LVG might see us as a potential rival and refuse to sell his fringe players to us.

Whilst we have had a great week with the signings of Beic, Barkley and Lukaku, is anyone else worried that we have not actually improved the first eleven, which is likely to be exactly the same as last year? We undoubtedly have more depth to our squad but IÂ’m not sure we have improved our starting line up, which the likes of Liverpool have definitely done. With the money we have paid out for Lukaku, IÂ’m imagining that any further additions will be squad type players, rather than stars. WeÂ’ve provided more stability but, so far, no more quality.

Talking of set pieces, am I the only one who thinks we've become pretty hopeless with these since OFM departed? Our corners are no longer well delivered and create little threat whilst weakness in defending them caused quite a few heartaches last season.

I know that to mention ANYTHING that compliments Moyes is risking attack but I do think the hours he spent in rehearsing set plays guaranteed a great strength in these situations.

80 Posted 02/08/2014 at 09:16:58
Agreed. Ratboy's replacements will have to find 32 goals from somewhere. Not easy. All the same, while Sterling is there they are capable of beating anyone. The 2 up front were scoring the goals but he was the one ripping teams apart, including us. He came on and murdered City the other night and scored a legal wonder goal which was ruled offside. No surprise that Roberto is looking for someone similar. The lightening pace of Sterling, Navas, Schurrle, Hazard, Robben, Bale, Oxlade, Ronaldo and co has become a mighty weapon. The way Bolassie of Palace gave Seamus the runaround before crossing over and annihilating Baines will long be remembered. We want some of that. Martinez definitely wants some of that. Bring it on.

Many folk are pleading for a creative No10. Not me. It wouldn't suit our style of play. If it did, Roberto would have brought one in. He prefers players who can do it on their own. Taking on people one on one . He has said it many times. For him, it's the way to open things up. Bielsa style.

Interesting Harold. I always thought a Carzola type (previously Arteta) would be great for us. But we do miss that single minded speedy forward / creativity that best teams have. Obviously Arsenal have signed Sanchez, in our recent history Kanchelskis was that player. I don't know who's out there for us to get - hopefully Atsu but if not surely there must be some players - Walcott, Ox, Bale all the type if players we lack. I don't think we have anybody in the academy of this ilk .... Maybe Delefou will be eventually signed? Anyway, I trust Martinez to sort it out be it this year, next or future years ... He's building a great football team

Harold - you and I think are of one mind on the question of a playmaker. I said as much a few days back on another thread.

The idea of a playmaker - whether deep of advanced - is a bit 20th century, a bit old hat. We are now talking 'Total Football' - not the original Dutch model, but an evolved, post-tika-taka version. Creativity and goals must come from all parts of the field; players must be flexible in their roles. That is what Our Glorious Leader is aiming at. As you say, Harold, if he'd felt the need for a playmaker then he'd have bought one.

Interesting, too, that you mention Bielsa. His Bilbao side was a little bit unusual in that it employed a traditional centre forward, Llorente, allowing them to hit the ball long on occasions and dramatically vary the pace of their play.

Wayne Smyth
84 Posted 02/08/2014 at 11:15:48
According to Galloway himself, he's a centre half and has played most of his games there. He's 6ft 1 and sounds like he's a Martinez style footballing defender who is comfortable with the ball.

Hopefully a first team regular in the making and a long-term partner for Stones.

Kev ( 83) in principal I agree with what your saying however I do feel we lack an intelligent attacking midfielder who can unlock defenses . Too many times last season we passed and passed in front of opposing defenses only to lose the ball and get hit on the break
If only we could find a player in the mold of Peter Beardsley who could see passes nobody else could , with Ossie not lasting 90 mis these days this position must be addressed by RM before the window closes .

Bobby Collins was the best midfield passer we have ever had and of the modern players there are NO English players of that standard.

Wilshere is nowhere near the standard so we will need to look abroad.

Fair point, Colin M (86). Ossie and Pienaar can do that, but both are in decline. That's why I'd prefer us to buy a younger version of those guys to play wide midfield, rather than another out and out winger like Atsu.

I have to disagree, Colin G (88) - I don't think Barkley is that kind of player. He's never going to be someone who conducts the orchestra; the lad's a soloist.

Anyway, enough of all that. What happened to Atsu ?

Whilst Osman and Pienaar still have something to offer, it would serve the team better if they were only used from the bench. Neither has the pace to go 90 minutes or even a full half, in my opinion.

Everton have newer, hungrier, younger and quicker players at their disposal now and thatÂ’s what is needed in this high-intensity league. One only has to see what the RS are employing these days and they almost stole the league last year did they not?

Speed is essential and Everton have lacked that over the years but, with several quick players, including Seamus, they showed how much success it garnered last season.

Osman and Pienaar are proper footballers who look to make space for themselves and others. I hope Everton will always find room for such players in preference to the grocks some people favour.

Peter,

Amen to that. If Everton FC can't find a place for a player of Osman's kind then it's a sadder, poorer club.

No mention of Atsu on SKY today so far....

Other transfer news has been reported but not Atsu ????

Rumours abound on twitter that the Atsu loan deal has hit a stalemate. The source is Pete O'Rourke from Sky. No other details other than a few people saying that it's because we want a 6-month deal but Chelsea want the full season (which seems like utter tosh to me, but there we go). Fingers crossed this one still comes off as he looks like he would add something to the squad in my opinion

Does anyone know what's wrong with Kone now?

Andy (#99)

Koné has been one strange signing... Firstly, spending £6 million on a 30-year-old is something we have not done before or since.

We then had all this Ramadan rubbish that seemed to only affect him even though all Muslim players observe this ritual.

Then the silence about his injury is deafening?? Is it a cruciate ligament? A tendon? A break? A rupture? ... The lads leg must have dropped off!

Even the worst knee injuries are usually a ten-month layoff, maximum; yet, a year on, he seems as far away as ever from the first team! Has he even managed to do any pre-season training?

HeÂ’s in full training now, according to the commentators during the Porto game! IÂ’ll reserve judgement untill I see him miss a sitter on the pitch!
