Howard: USA Secretary of Defence is just Everton's overrated keeper

Blogger Tim Hill offers a fairly withering critique of Everton's No.1 in a piece on The Guardian website.

"Tim Howard is a good guy, and a good goalkeeper. But he’s perhaps not a great goalkeeper. As the Chelsea game showed, the beatification of St Timothy, post-Belgium, came too soon. He has too many flaws to be great..."

I was at the Belgium vs US game & it was only the Mirallas one with his feet that can amount to a "good save". So, on the back of his Human Sieve performance at the weekend & the article’s analysis of some of the softer concessions throughout his time with us, I have to side with Mr Hill, nice guy though Tim is.

It’s sad but true.

The guy has been found out! Doesn’t command his box, very erratic when needed to play a sweeper role with a high back line. Stays glued to his goal line instead of helping his back four with crosses, decision making shit and 1-v-1s piss poor. (Makes it easy for the attacking player by falling to ground).

His kicking is poor and he makes so many technical cock -ups. Sorry Tim, your’re finished at the top end. Don’t worry, that fat contract will keep you happy.

I think we all know Tim is not and never as been the best, but he is the best we have. I can never understand why a goalie can't stay on his two feet when a player is approaching and simply make a tackle. Instead of dropping to the ground and trying to block a shot. But hey what do I know I only watch them.

We should have invested in a Goalie and defenders in the summer. Because I can see a long season ahead with what we have.

The Cardif keeper would do for me.

Agreed totally!!

Likeable guy but probably gets too many plaudits.

Has an awful lot of flaws in his game that at the age of 35 he isn't going to get any better at.

Always said a good shot stopper but nothing more, no necessarily commanding or great at decision making, another annoying thing with Howard is how he somehow ends up behind the goal-line before the ball crosses it, that's Tim though isn't it?

Agree there was too much made of his World Cup so-called "heroics" to be honest if I was a goalkeeper at professional level I would have been disappointed not to have saved most of them shots, I believe it was more down to tepid finishing from the Belgians.

In this day and age though when everything is either "amazing" or "phenomenal" it probably shouldn't surprise us with the OTT reactions.
