Lukaku starts for Belgium

Romelu Lukaku was named in Marc Wilmots' starting XI for Belgium's final Euro2016 qualifying group game against Israel this evening and played almost 65 minutes of the comfortable win.

The match had more riding on it for Israel than the Red Devils, the latter having already qualified for next summer's Finals in France. A win for Belgium, however, would elevate them to the top of the world FIFA rankings.

Lukaku went close to opening the scoring when he almost slid home Kevin de Bruyne's cross but it was Dries Mertens who somehow put a left-foot shot wide when it was easier to score later in the half.

Meanwhile, Israel, who were trying to take the playoff spot in the group ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina, hit the post off a well-struck free kick.

Lukaku was withdrawn shortly after Mertens had given the hosts the lead in the 64th minute. Eden Hazard and De Bruyne would go on to pad the lead in an eventual 3-1 victory that ensures Belgium topped the group.

Muhamed Besic and Bosnia head to the playoffs after their 3-2 win in Cyprus that ensured they finished third.
