FC Twente 0 - 3 Everton

Pre-Season Friendly
Everton take on the Dutch Eredivise side in their second pre-season workout of the summer.

Michael Keane is the only new man to start but Rooney, Martina and Klaassen are on the bench. Pickford and Sandro are not involved.

There was some decent action from Everton going forward throughout the first half but no goals until just before half-time when Kevin Mirallas moved across the area and smashed a nice shot into the top corner.

Michael Keane and Leighton Baines were swapped out after the break, with Phil Jagielka and Callum Connolly coming on.

There was a wholesale rotation of the remaining outfield players just after the hour mark, with the game then becoming scrappy as the new side settled in.

Aaron Lennon was on target after 72 mins with a slightly deflected shot to make it 2-0 for the Premier League visitors.

Kieran Dowell was the next to put his stamp on the game, picking his moment for an excellent shot out of the crowd and low into the far corner on 82 mins. Very well taken goal.

Everton: Stekelenburg, Kenny (63' Martina), Williams (63' Besic), Keane (46' Jagielka), Baines (46' Connolly), McCarthy (63' Klaassen), Barry (63' Schneiderlin), Davies (63' Gueye), Mirallas (63' Lennon), Lookman (63' Rooney), Calvert-Lewin (63' Dowell).
Subs not Used: Robles.

How frustrating. I'm prepared to buy the game and can't. Errors from the website, crap once again when it comes to preseason games.

Who is handling this, because they need to be given a rocket, it's the same every year.

Mr Moshiri – if you're reading this, there is revenue being lost because of someone's incompetence.

You aren't missing anything. I eventually signed in as a season ticket holder after sending a formal complaint last time. All I've got is the spinning wheel since the start.

Absolutely execrable IT from Everton Football Club

Twenty seven minutes gone and still spinning. Are Everton using a 20-year old modem for this?

I know Frank its absolute staggering how poor this stuff is. I could imagine if the live camera feed itself didn't work, but why are they continually unable to do rudimentary connections for comparably small number of people.

How many do you suspect have paid? 10k, 20k max.

The support is also pathetic – none existent page. You'd think after last week they'd have made some improvement but apparently not...

Not much happening at all in this game (a lot less exciting than the previous outing).

Encouraging to see Kenny on the right of what looks like a starting back 4. Not sure why we're not giving Sandro even a bench slot.

39 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:48:36
Mirallas is a very frustrating player; he shows the odd glimpse of what he can do, just doesn't do often enough.

That Starting 11, only Keane, Baines, maybe Williams will be probably in the 1st team come the game against Stoke.

Chris James
40 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:49:32
Some good chances first half by the looks of things (I can see highlights at least), I do worry that Calvert-Lewin isn't quite there yet as a finisher.

Started well, got bitty, cracking Mirallas goal close to half-time.

Barry orchestrating everything good from Everton. Good moments from Mirallas, Lookman and Calvert-Lewin. Had chances to score earlier. Kenny and Keane looking solid in defence.

Playing well within themselves. Commentary says Koeman is not planning to switch out the entire XI as he did in Tanzania, so we may have to wait some to see Sandro in a blue shirt.

Jay Harris
43 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:55:05
Very impressed with Lookman. He has been involved in most moves and is the only one to trouble the keeper apart from Super Kev's goal.

McCarthy is having a decent game too.

Williams and Keane look solid. Tom Davies is a bit off his game though.

Usual lack of movement up front, Lookman excepted.

The official stream is working for me now. Just try it again ('Watch game live') from Match Centre on Evertonfc.com.

49 Posted 19/07/2017 at 18:59:27
Sound is poor and at half time nothing but watching the players tapping the ball around. Couldn't Everton have recorded something, maybe an interview with a player or Koeman?

Totally amateur production, something you would expect from a local team on tour not a Premier League team.

Another example of Everton's Corner Shop mentality when all their rivals are running Super Stores.

Calvert-Lewin has the look of Kane when he represented England U20s at the age group World Cup. He's still quite rough but is sort of doing the right things. If he ends up anything like Kane, we will be okay.

I was going to go to town on Mirallas, but he has redeemed himself with that goal, for the time being anyway. Up to then, he was playing like a rank amateur.

Well, I think Calvert-Lewin is having a good pre-season.

He played extremely well in the 2nd half in Tanzania, led the line well, held up the ball and laid it off well.

Yes, he and Mirallas spurned a good chance to score mid-way through today's game, but he has shown good movement across the width of the pitch, can hold up the ball and shows ability to get in behind the defence.

Needs to be sharper with his finishing, but he shows promise.

Martina wasn't too bad, but he really should have tried crosses into the box on some occasions when he made short back-passes instead. Lennon was lively, and I loved his goal! Connolly had a good showing!

And Dowell really shows what he can do for the second game in a row. I know we all felt he looked a little light-weight last season, but I really hope he can build on this (and in the gym, if necessary...)! Lookman did very well.

I'm not saying much about the first-half team, as beer only lets me remember recent events very clearly... ;D But Keane was solid, Mirallas did a Mirallas again, and then suddenly his (by that time unexpected...) goal was a lovely rant-stopper, as usual! ;P

Good workout, decent scoreline. A number of plusses from Koeman's Kids.

I thought Connolly, Kenny, Dowell, Lookman all played really well.

Did Sandro travel?

Derek Knox
121 Posted 19/07/2017 at 20:01:05
Very impressed with Kieran Dowell over the two games, there wasn't anyone who looked like they were going through the motions, they were all out to impress, and there is genuine competition for places again.

Can't be a bad thing, at all, having read a lot of adverse reports, I was quite surprised that Cuco Martina seemed to slot in well enough without being spectacular, but doing a decent job.

I think both of the games thus far will have done a lot for team bonding, morale, and a step up in fitness, which is the purpose of pre-season; mission accomplished.

Best moments for me was when Wayne in the last couple of minutes harried a player on the right touchline and then cleaned out a player almost right at the end.

That will stick with every player on the squad!

That's one of the things Rooney brings to the team, he gets stuck in regardless if it's a friendly or not otherwise he seemed to lose the ball a lot.

I like how Klaassen moves the ball on quickly, Besic likewise. Schneiderlin and Gana looked rusty.

Jagielka is very limited with the ball at feet, we need to stop that knocking it around at the back nonsense, it's a bad habit that Koeman needs to eliminate.

I thought Connolly looked good, positive and nippy.

Ben (#72) I hope so, he (Lookman) looked very lively.

I hope that I'm wrong but Calvert-Lewin – I just don't see it, too lightweight, no fight in him. We desperately need a tall, mobile CF more than any other position.

Finally, Stekelenburg – no. He seems very unsure of himself, a mistake waiting to happen.

Forgot to mention, the poor standard of refereeing and linesmanship, some blatant fouls committed right in front of them, and they didn't see them. There were some bad tackles went in mostly from Twente players, which could have, but thankfully, didn't, cause some injuries.

Dowell looking very handy, hope he, Kenny and Lookman will all get a decent chance in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a lot of good elements but somehow seems to lack the final touch or instinct for me.

Good preseason game. Young lads played very well. I love seeing Rooney up front. He is class. A fit Rooney will provide essential help. We need some more signings though... and I really hate our shirt.

Good game all around. Solid at the back and in the middle for both first and second half sides.

Lookman looked dangerous in the first half and I particularly liked some of the quick touch stuff between Rooney and Klaassen. Both very intelligent players who I think will work well together.

Promising – we look fitter and better team play than last few pre-seasons. In both games, the second half team a lot better, but overall Lookman, Keane, Dowell, Gana and Klaassen standing out for me over the two games.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, and Paul you touch upon it.

We looked so very sharp at this stage, each players vehemence and intention is close to match sharpness. Not there yet but, with Europa League not far away, if you set a standard then you execute a standard – it looked much sharper at this stage of pre-season than I have ever seen a pre-season.

Ok so despite being a ToffeeWeb browser for several years, I have never actually posted a comment... so I am losing my cherry here!

Couple of things:

1) I paid up for official £25 membership today to get the games live plus the extra goodies. Opened up the pre-season game link at 6pm for this match and just got a spinning wheel and black screen, with no sound. Refreshed the page several times – still nothing. This was through Internet Explorer on my laptop. Turned off computer and restarted. Still the same. Wasn't sure whether it was my temperamental laptop that is 7 years old, or the site, but checking into TW, saw others were having the same issues.

2) So logged on to evertonfc on my girlfriend's iPad (Safari), got the live stream straight away, bonza!!! Live coverage from 22 mins, missed Calvert-Lewin's, Mirallas's and Lookman's early chances, but got to se Kev's peach of a goal top right corner on 43 mins.

3) Girlfriend gets home 10 mins before end of 1st half, says she needs a lift into town. I say okay, if your ready in 10mins we can go at half-time. She is never ready that early... 10mins into 2nd half, off I trot to be the good boyfriend. But pleased as punch that I got home on the 70-min mark, to see a great comeback (from the dark side) goal for Lennon, and great feet and awesome finish from Kieran Dowell!

Jags did well; I would start him before Williams.

We really need a striker. Young Calvert-Lewin needs a bit more time but there is something there, I reckon.

Great to see Lennon mark one up.

Loved the announcer's "Mamma mia!" on Dowell's goal.

My view from my girlfriend's iPad, given this is pre-season so being nice:

Stekelenburg: 6 out of 10 – not much to do for most part, was in no-man's land for the through-ball in 1st half when their striker scuffed his shot wide of left-hand post, but made a good reaction save and good claim from a crowd of players 2nd half.

Kenny: 7 – looked solid, some good tackles and clearances, always looking for the ball out wide, tried to move in forward and start some moves when in advanced positions.

Baines: 5 – didn't do much wrong defensively, but didn't do much offensively, just didn't do much overall.

Keane: 8 – solid, put himself about, closed the strikers down well, interceptions, headers, nearly scored a volley at the other end. Good 1st half from him.

Williams: 7 – not much to do most part, looked assured, but crucial interception/clearance of a dangerous low cross in 2nd half.

Barry: 7.5 – assured in holding role, with some good passing and through-balls forward.

Tom Davies: 6 – got stuck in, showed effort across the park, some good challenges, bit sloppy in possession.

McCarthy: 5 – took me a little while to realise he was playing, got about the pitch okay, but to do what exactly.

Mirallas: 6 – really, 9 for the goal though – lively early on, what was that free kick all about, great run and finish for the goal, is the season where we eventually see more ‘productivity' from him or is he off to Turkey?

Calvert-Lewin: 6 – lively held ball up well, got in good positions around box, bit sloppy with final ball, missed a one v one vs keeper, but made the run so... has potential

Lookman: 8 – chased back, won balls in midfield, great movement, some good attempts on goal, very lively, excited for the season.

Martina: 5 – I noticed that he was playing on the right-hand side in the 2nd half, so that's something over McCarthy, got in some advanced positions but played the ball back rather than crossing, not a great deal to do defensively. Not that excited about this signing, but he was free so hey ho.

Connolly: 8 – very good defensively, some good marking, interceptions, positive going forward , some good crosses into the box with his left peg, just no one in the box as standard for us, promising Baines deputy?

Jagielka: 5 – not a great deal to do,

Besic: 7 – I'm liking Mo in the Left central defender role, what he lacks in height, he makes up for in bite, he's not slow and can play the ball nicely from the back or even take it out of defence, good job Funes Mori is crocked (though wish him a speedy recovery) as may have finally found a ball paying left footed centre half who can actually pass to a blue player unlike Funes Mori.

Gana: 8.5* – does what Gana does best, week-in & week-out, but got into some advance positions, a few neat passes and a good shoot on goal.

Schneiderlin: 6 – steady, assured, tidy

Klaassen: 7 – good run and nearly scored with his head, moves the ball well, actually runs into the box which is novel, likes to put his foot in and does the defensive job too (so an upgrade on Ross in this regard, but is he more competing with Tom Davies in the more advanced of the midfield three, than as a No 10).

Lennon: 8 – lively on the left wing, puts himself about, good chasing and pressure on the full back led to his goal, positive run and cheeky finish through the legs in the far corner. Hope he stays and does not join Harry at Birmingham.

Dowell – 8- exceptional feet and finish for his goal, good vision and cross for Klaassen chance, great left foot, awesome goal in Tanzania too, hope he keeps it up and gets his chance, could there be a Ross Barkley size hole in the team for Kieran.

Rooney: 7 – okay, he lost the ball quite a bit and his touch was erratic, but his attitude in a pre-season friendly was awesome, put himself about a bit too much near the end, but we need more aggression in the team, when he did have the ball he spread it about well and was always looking for the ball, even dropping deep at times, looked like he had the bit between his teeth to drive the others on, even at this early stage. I'm made up he has come home...

I'm delighted to see Dowell showing good form. He looks to me to have bulked up a bit, there's loads of talent there.

Lookman, meanwhile, is just fine tuning himself; once he does (and I think it'll take another year or so), my word – we are going to have a player on our hands.

All very promising.

Little point banging on about how bad Everton are at televising pre-season friendlies. They are after all a footy club not a production outfit.

I'd take the view that next season I'd expect Everton to be involved in a bigger profile pre-season and the games will be properly televised, as they should.

As for the game: neat and tidy. Lookman stood out both for his ability to attract players to him, but conversely for not releasing the ball into the spaces he created or going on the outside. But promise and a little more physicality from the lad.

Keane looked in first gear, Davies his useful self. Off that showing , I have no idea what the team will be for a week on Thursday.

Great goal by Lennon. That sheer speed to get on the ball to start it all. Excellent, composed close footwork by Dowell for his. Mirallas is well capable of his goal, there should be more of that.

Some Keystone Cops stuff in both boxes. Another good run-out though.

Just caught bits of it. Dowell and Lookman continuing their World Cup winning form.

Most of all, we now need a presence up front, a reliable striker to link play and, most importantly, score regularly. I'm not sure Rooney is that player. I think Giroud could be. Or Batshuayi (now Chelsea have bought Morata).

Also I'd be very interested in Patrik Schick who just had his move to Juve collapse; less-known entity but looks a pretty complete young striker.

Good shout, Sam @155, with regards to Schick. I have been reading about him quite a bit recently, and although he is pretty unknown, to us, his performances have brought glowing reports.

I keep wondering why Steve Walsh made a trip to Italy; maybe this guy was on his list. Everyone keeps going on about Giroud; fair point he is proven, but a very expensive short-term solution, whereas Schick is young enough to hopefully produce and grow with the great blend we have at present.

How did Besic do as a centre-back? (again...)
Derek Knox
158 Posted 20/07/2017 at 08:52:54
David @159, Besic has impressed me over the two games, and seemed to be a reliable deputy, should he be called upon; however, over these two games, while the opposition, were decent enough, it's difficult to equate to Premier League.

In fact, nobody was found out, and the competition for places has certainly hotted up, which can only be a good thing. Okay, some errors, but very few, some of the younger lads have caught the eye, most notably Kieran Dowell, Lookman will be some player for us too, if he gets a decent run.

Like I said before, I can only see good things ahead, and have been inspired by games so far. Wish I could say the same, for the OS coverage of the games.

The game in Africa, was a total shambles, and I don't think many saw a lot, of even the second half. Luckily, a TW'er posted a link to a Kenyan Sports channel, which worked for me, so I saw most of the game. Even last night's game was a bit stop start, had to keep refreshing.

Hope that helps!

I can't help thinking it was a bit too easy for Everton. They were given acres of space, never experienced any serious pressing or threat and in general may have been better off in facing a more skilful team in terms of facing up to what they are going to meet up with in the coming season.

As for the Everton TV link, my video was fine; I think because I logged on half an hour before the match started. I have noticed in the past that a lot of websites cannot handle loads of individuals logging in within a short period of time. But, the sound quality was abysmal, solved that by connecting the computer to an old fashioned hi-fi amplifier.

I can't help but laugh when I hear youngsters going on about the wonders of new technology, God help us when we all try getting to Bramley-Moore Dock together in driverless cars – I hope they will have built-in tide tables.

Just looking at the combinations used to see if there may be anything to go on for the first choice starting XI.

Williams and Keane played together, are they the first choice centre back pairing?

In midfield we had Barry - Davies - McCarthy replaced by Schneiderlin - Gueye - Klaassen. I'm guessing the latter combination are favourites to start at this stage.

Then Rooney didn't start; wondering if this is to give him game time with Sandro in the next match? Right-back and third attacking player options still to be decided. This would give a starting XI of:

Pickford;
Kenny / Holgate / Martina, Williams, Keane, Baines;
Klaassen, Schneiderlin, Gueye;
Sandro, Rooney, Mirallas / Lennon / Lookman (or new signing).

Sam Hoare
161 Posted 20/07/2017 at 10:56:23
Carl, I have a feeling we saw (possibly) the first choice back four in the first half with the first choice midfield in the second half and the attack mixed.

If I'm right we might start something like this team in the Europa League:

Pickford
Kenny Williams Keane Baines
Schneiderlin Klaassen Gueye
Lookman Rooney Sandro

Depends on how the friendly at Genk goes and whether Koeman feels happy to throw Pickford and Sandro in yet. The likes of Dowell, Jagielka, Barry, Davies and Mirallas may yet hope to force their way in. Koeman might also opt for the experience of Martina or Holgate over Kenny.
