Holgate to undergo 'minor' surgery

Mason Holgate has withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad to have an operation on his ankle, the club have announced.

The 21-year-old defender has been in and out of the first team this season but was called up by his country's U21s this month.

He now requires what Everton describe as "minor surgery" to correct an ankle problem, however, and faces a short spell on the sidelines.

Best of luck to him. Even a minor or niggling injury can affect the way you play. He is young but still has the potential to be a very good player.

To me, he appears to be the type of young player who would really benefit from sound advice on positional play and tackling. I hope he can get that at Everton.

Huge prospect.

Doesn't fit into Sam's "Avit" philosophy. Hopefully, we will have a new manager by the time he comes back.

So now we know why we've seen so little of him recently.

Still think he's our next generation centre-back. Has the talent, has the will, has the drive to learn.

Decent player but one of the few Everton players I actively dislike. Comes across as a real arrogant lad.

He comes across well in the few interviews I've seen... or do you mean arrogant on the pitch, Phil?

Have a look at the one in Around the Table: Calvert-Lewin, Davies and Holgate on YouTube from a year ago:

The out-takes were funny – 3 youngsters who seem good friends.

When he learns to concentrate, he'll be our best centre-back. Hopefully, by the time he's fit, we'll have a manager that likes skilful defenders and helps them by picking the same back four for a run of games.

He lives in my approximate area, or did last year at least. A neighbour told me he's a really pleasant guy. Best of luck in his recovery. The potential is there with the right development.

I'm not sure he's strong enough or dominant enough.

Hope I'm wrong.
