Transfer Deadline Day

Thursday, 9 August, 2018 343comments  |  Jump to most recent
The Premier League summer transfer window closes before the big kick-off for the first time this evening with all incoming deals needing to be done by 5pm.

Having taken the full close season to assess the squad they inherited from Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Steve Walsh, Marco Silva and Marcel Brands's recruitment drive has gone right to the wire with a few holes in the team that still need to be addressed.

The Blues started the proceedings by unveiling their third major signing of the summer behind Richarlison and Lucas Digne in the form of Bernard who underwent a medical yesterday and completed the formalities on a four- or five-year contract this afternoon.

There was a high degree of confidence, too, that the Yerry Mina saga would end in a successful conclusion which it did when completed a £28m switch from Barcelona.

Everton had been trying to secure a deal for the Colombian for a while now but despite late reported interest from Manchester United and Lyon, they won the race for his signature as he underwent a medical in Barcelona with Everton representatives having flown in to finalise things.

Another Barcelona player in Andre Gomes was also having a physical with a view to joining the Blues and his season-long loan was also done ahead of the deadline. The Portuguese, who had been linked with both Arsenal and Tottenham in the past, emerged as a loan target yesterday. He is currently recovering from a hamstring strain and would be unlikely to be ready for action until next month at the earliest.

Meanwhile, speculation around Chelsea's centre-half Kurt Zouma and Manchester United's Marcos Rojo ramped up this afternoon with L'Equipe reporting that Everton have come to an agreement over a loan deal for Zouma and the Telegraph suggesting the Blues were also in for Rojo at £22m.

The Rojo talk proved baseless but a deal sheet for Zouma was submitted just before the deadline, giving Everton two more hours to complete the deal with Chelsea.

In terms of outgoings, Yannick Bolasie, Sandro Ramirez, Muhamed Besic, Nikola Vlasic and Cuco Martina look to be the most likely, although depending on their destination, any transfers they might make could still be done by the end of the month.

Besic appeared to be the closest to leaving today with Middlesbrough actively trying to get a deal over the line after the Blues set an asking price of £6m, although it looks like it might be a loan again for now.

Martina might have joined him there with one report claiming the defender had agreed a season-long loan move to the Riverside but that does not appear to have come off.

Nikola Vlasic has reportedly attracted attention from CSKA Moscow where he could move on loan for the season.

Ademola Lookman won't be going anywhere it seems with Sky reporting to that effect this afternoon.

Sandro is said to have interested Valencia and, again, given that the deadline everywhere else is the usual 31st of August cut-off, there are still three weeks for him to find a new club if that is what he and Silva want.

If Bolasie is to get his preferred move to another Premier League club, he would need to seal any deal today given that Everton are only interested in a straight sale rather than a loan, according to Sky.

If we lose:

Bolasie
Williams
Mirallas
Klaassen
Rooney
Robles
Garbutt

And bring in:

Bernard
Richarlison
Mina
Digne
And anyone else as a bonus

I will shoot my load.

I have been very impressed with the progress made by M and M but can't help but worry that Schneiderlin remains and seems be first team starter. Koeman and Allardyce saw something in him that they felt merited a place and it seems Silva also has that same faith. As many others have observed down the years a lack of ability can be forgiven but a lack of effort cannot: it felt his attitude was toxic for the team.

In Schneiderlin many have felt angered by his apparent lack of effort and commitment, and like Mirallas, he should be offloaded. I have faith in Silva and Brands and if they can rediscover the Schneiderlin that impressed at Southampton then great.

It must be difficult to motivate millionaire players into the kind of fanaticism the likes of Klopp inspires. Since Schneiderlin got married to his incredible wife his energy levels and determination seem to have evaporated. It would be some trick to get him to make Everton his top priority.

Boro have until 5pm for a permanent deal, it's only loans that can be concluded up until Aug 31

It’ll probably take most of the day to finalise the Bernard deal so where that leaves other potential moves I’m not sure.

We badly need the Mina or Zouma deals to go through, to sign both is wishful thinking but if we don’t pull off a centre half coup in the next 8 hours or so then you do have major concerns about our defensive prospects this season.

Between now and 5pm is going to shape our season and arguably make or break it, much like the monumental failure to replace Lukaku last summer broke the 17/18 campaign into pieces before September was even done.

There is much resting on the shoulders of Cenk Tosun, both staying fit and making sure he is the man to score the goals (and in good quantity).

At £27 million we need him to have a good season and with no other overly convincing striker options it’s absolutely crucial for Tosun to be a goal scorer and focal point.

By the end of today, this transfer window could either be good or not so good. Everton is definitely a long-term project, but there is evidence they have moved up a gear, for as now no established reason. The change was signaled by the signing of Richarlison. At least Everton are heading in the right direction, unlike last year, which though much heralded had no rhyme or reason to it and was a rip-off as a result.

The pre-season has shown how much work needs to be done. Unfortunately it will take time to bed in the new additions and we will have to live with the weaknesses that still exist. Brands and Silva have a clear plan and have established the standard they want. Certain weak areas of the team have been exposed and players have a more realistic realisation of where they are in the pecking order in a Premier League team.

Brands has shown ability and has changed the perception of Everton as a serious football destination. He has given Everton the edge over rivals in the transfer market and exposed weaknesses, particularly in Man Utd. Silva has set his stall out in pre-season and set out the template of an offensive system, which Everton at their best were unrivalled. There is no hiding place for the attitude that has been a drag in performance for years. The backroom boys know they have to step up and don't feel as secure as they had been.

Everton are better placed now than they have been for years. We are off square one in a three-year plan, rather than needing more time for projects that never existed — only in the minds of those that thought in terms of contract extensions.

Can’t help but fear we are being totally played and strung along by Mina

I really hope someone at Goodison has the good sense to say, ‘either he’s an Everton player by midday or get someone else in’

It would be RIDICULOUS if we don’t get a decent centre half or 2

And yet I can see it...

SKY: "Yerry Mina very, very close."

If we finish today with Bernard and Mina then we have an excellent transfer window. We can be optimistic for the season. I think the pressing, energetic game Silva wants was beginning to emerge as the pre-season progressed, and there are many reasons to look forward.

If we haven’t already agreed deals by now I can’t see much happening today.
Hopefully Bernard will happen this morning but as for Mina, Zouma etc who knows.
If we don’t sign two class central defenders today it’s going to be a very tough season.
Fingers crossed that we have a successful day and we are all very happy at the end of it.

Can someone explain why on deadline day players cannot have a medical in their home country, conducted by an approved doctor?

It’s easy for a uk based player to travel anywhere in the UK, so why can’t a foreign player travel to a medical centre in their country of residence, to be examined by a qualified/recognised doctor?

Better still why don’t we send our medical team(s) to whichever country!

Other clubs have private jets on standby! However, I can’t recall us ever taking that option?

Does Moshiri have a private jet?

Three in today (including Bernard) would be the absolute best we can wish for. The season depends on one, preferably two CB coming in - though if one is a loan do we have more time for that?

Bernard & Mina could be the players coming in that makes the rest believe in this team. They could be the catalyst that makes others want to join today.

Then it is up to Silva to put us in the top 6 by Xmas.

Mina has been going on for two months at least, as the Digne talks were. If it's almost done, it could be that he can have a medical in Spain. I don't think we'll get two central defenders, but I think getting one in will make a big difference.

As I said somewhere else a while ago, I think Keane will come on if he gets the chance to play alongside a better, stronger defender at an earlier stage in his career. I don't think playing alongside Jagielka has been good for Keane.

Two centre-backs in along with Bernard, plus Davies & Bolasie off to distant shores would do me. But deep down another striker as Calvert-Lewin & Niasse can't cut it...

Bernard is done.

I’d like Zouma. Mina would be good so long as it’s unde £30m (I personally don’t like overpaying drastically). André Gomes looks risky to me, been poor in many appearances for Barca. Drinkwater on loan could be interesting.

Dale, Zouma is now Man Utd bound.

It's the same for every player, why would they choose us over Man Utd, they've no loyalty to us. Utd can offer so much more in every aspect. Let's not worry that Mina didn't want to come here, let's worry that he settles and enjoys life here. He'll have his mates Lucas and Charlie to help him settle in, he'll play every week. I'm sure he'll be a true blue in no time.

Mike Kehoe @2, spot on there mate, regarding Schneiderlin, anyone, no matter how much they cost, can have a dip in form or have an off day.

I think I have seen him have 1.5 decent games in all the time he's been here, which is not in my book a good return. After that incident with Mirallas last year he should have been out the door.

Mirallas has gone, but he remains, on the backs of the good signings we have, and are still making, it only takes one bad apple to destroy everything.

Dermot, we should always be more attractive than West Ham, they’ve been relegated how many times in recent years. Bernard and Mina will be done today and Gomes is desperate to come, it will be a loan deal which will suit us to try before buying. We need another centre half though. Brands has been on the ball, massive credit to him, to shift out about ten or more players and bring in four or five quality additions, makes me positive for the future.

I don't know, Dale. If you can't expect loyalty, then you might as well hope for someone who truly believes they can play at the very top level. It's better than someone who is thrilled to sign for us because they know no-one in the CL will go anywhere near them.

It's great to hear us hopefully sorting out positions we all know should have been sorted years ago.

However, how many of us have been on and on about us not replacing Lukaku's goals. We seem not to be mentioning his replacement.

Great making our defence more difficult to score against, great making our midfield more creative, but at the end of the day we still need someone to stick it in the net.

Steve #29,
We don't know that Mina didn't want to come here. We have no idea what has caused the holdup. It could have been Barcelona wanting more money or hoping to use him as a make-weight in a Pogba deal. Barcelona have only recently accepted our offer. Nothing could be done before then. It's a huge decision for the lad. Maybe he weighed up all his options and then chose us? Maybe he wanted to come to us all along and isn't responsible for the holdup at all.

James #26,

That's basically what Newsnow does. It provides you with all recent Everton related links. The same reports you'll find googling, just a bit more convenient.

An absolute TDD necessity.

Permanent deal Mike. They sold Matic to Utd last year. Chelsea is run more like a business now. Then again, they just spent £71m on a goalkepa.

Tony, I really like Andre Gomes. He is a very good midfielder. He is a number 8 (as in plays box-to-box). Great technique, great feet, excellent range of passing, excellent accuracy. He's tall but he's not strong. He's not good in the tackle. I hoped we might push him into the Schneiderlin role. My (Benfica supporting (Portuguese)) mate tells me not. I've not seen Andre Gomes that often, he's a Benfica player not a Sporting one, but I have watched most of the Portuguese national team games and he did feature often for them, but lost his place after he failed to play much for Barca. He's always done well for them.

The question is, do we need him when we have Sigurdsson, and what would it mean for Dowell?

It’s looking like Bernard, Mina and Andre Gomes.

I don’t know much about André Gomes as a player, only that he seems to be constantly linked with transfers to the Premier League, but I gather he could displace Schneiderlin in our strongest XI. He’s also said to be ‘desperate’ to make the move happen.

Personally there’s others I’d like to see; my own favourites are Lascelles, Loftus-Cheek and Welbeck but I don’t think we’re making serious moves for any of them.

Then again, I don’t know anything other than what can be gleaned from journalists on the internet, so I still hold out hope that we’re doing some clever things somewhat secretly. In this day and age however, it’s very difficult to keep these things secret.

Here’s to ignoring my phone until 5.30pm today (never gonna happen).

Regarding the Zouma loan does this come under the 5pm deadline or do we have another 3 weeks to get him in?

I am pretty confident Mina is a done deal and the delay seems to revolve around Barca hoping Man U would show an interest to either jack the price up or as part of a deal for Pogba.

I was hoping for a goalscorer too but I suppose were getting greedy now.

As long as we get the CB and MF situations sorted out we can consider this a very good window.

IF we had Mina, Zouma, Bernard, Richarlison and Digne coupled with the clearout of deadwood in the squad (Williams, Mirallas, Klassen all gone among others) that'd be a tidy transfer window with the new bosses delivering what they setout to do.

Hopefully we can get some cash back for Bolasie (never really understood that one) and ship one or two others out and obviously would like a box-to-box mid and a new forward, but it'd be a decent start.

Aidan Baker

The PL have decided to close their market before the season starts, with Everton being one of the strongest advocates having lost star players on deadline day.

The EFL have followed suit except they can still register loans until the end of August.

Other UEFA countries have the market open until the end of August, meaning that they can only sell or loan to the PL up until 5pm today but can buy and loan from PL clubs until the August deadline.

You get the feeling that some foreign clubs are quite relaxed because PL clubs will be wanting to get rid of certain large wage earners off their books after today. Meaning potentially that PL squads will only be finalised at the end of the month.

Where it will become difficult is where a PL star (a Pogba type say) decides he wants to go to Real Madrid or Barcelona at all costs after the window is shut. The PL who own him either have to live with a star who doesn't want to play for them or sell knowing that they can't buy a replacement until January.

Aidan, I am with you on that, it all seems a bit unfair to have different window closing times, it's not as if it's a matter of hours, it's three weeks!

As you say, PL Clubs have to register their players after the window closes (25) so it is possible that a Foreign club come in with an attractive offer, which is acceptable by that player, and it goes through, they are at least one player light.

Some context, Leipzig's record transfer is Keita. They "bought" him for 24m Euros. Why the doubt over the transfer? Well they signed him off Slazburg. That's right one Red Bull team to another. So not quite a legit price as it's also a mechanism to move money between the clubs.

The next biggest transfer is 20m euros. Are they really going to stretch to £30m or even 30m euros? sure they have the Keita money but I doubt it.

Lookman will only leave if Silva is going to play Bernard and Richarlison as left wingers. I can't see how we can leave either of these expensive players on the bench, or the equally expensive Sigurdsson, or the equally expensive Walcott. I think they will all play, and so Lookman will be the guy on the bench, and he won't be leaving.

'Cos if the medical is done at Finch Farm and the player passes he can sign on the dotted line there and then, grab a shirt for the photo op and then get assigned his locker. All in time to get the paperwork through to UEFA before the deadline.

Never have so many people taken in so much information and learned so little.

It would appear we've signed nobody and I still cant keep up

Paul Bernard
74 Posted 09/08/2018 at 11:21:22
Fully expect Mina and Bernard done today.
If we can get any of Zouma, Gomes, Drinkwater or a back up striker like Welbeck in, then I will say its our best window in years.

I still think we need a powerhouse in midfield, we are often overrun in the midfield which I don't think helps our CB's at all. Also having players like Baines allowing crosses in is making the CB's done far more work than is necessary. Not defending Jags or Keane either, just don't think they get much protection.

I'd be very happy with Bernard and Mina today. I'd be delighted if Zouma joined them. I'm not convinced by Andre Gomes though he was better at Valencia than Barca. He's fairly slow, though a decent enough passer; reminds me quite alot of Schneiderlin to be honest.

I don't think we need another striker backup. With options we've got in wide areas its very possibly that Richarlison or Walcott could play central role and I think they'd both do it well.

Actually probably no intro video for this one given the timescale.

Mina and Bernard in + Bolasie out = good day and a solid window

If we also pick up some good loan deals to fill out a quality roster (some of: Zouma/Drinkwater/Gomes) and shift Sandro to Spain before the end of August then that's a fantastic transfer window. On paper - I thought getting Keane and Sandro was great business this time last year.

COYB - Just don't leave the Bernard and Mina deals go down to the wire. I don't want to be refreshing the news every 30 seconds to see if some late fax was received the right side of the deadline.

James Marshall
118 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:23:56
Michael@114

It's not our choice, it's the way the transfer market works these days - clubs and agents hang it out for inflated fees till the last day, and the merry-go-round starts to spin on the last day. One transfer leads to another.

It's a total myth that Everton are the only club that wait till the last day - you just don't notice how long and drawn out other clubs transfers are, in exactly the same way ours are purely because you don't follow them in the same way.

Michael Lynch
119 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:25:40
Jim, exactly. Cos if we don't get Mina + one other over the line, Jags and Keane will be our CD partnership for the rest of the season.

Now that would be a terrifying thought.

James Marshall
120 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:26:52

Steve Ferns
121 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:27:06
Michael we are signing the best players we can get, and the only way to do this was to hold our nerve and wait for the players to cross the big clubs off their preferred list and come down to us. Sure, we think we're a massive club, but Yerry Mina thinks we're a big step down from Barca, and he clearly wanted Man Utd.
Paul Mackay
122 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:27:41

Michael Lynch
123 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:29:48
Yeah, fair enough James & Steve. We're picking up players who have failed at big clubs and are hoping to get the chance at another big club, so they're hanging on for the best offer. The likes of the Shite are picking up players on an upward trajectory. But nevertheless... surely there are a few up and coming players, here or abroad, that we would have been scouting? We're talking about how we missed out on Maguire and Robertson last season, who are we missing out on this season?
James Marshall
124 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:33:18
Michael - I think we're going to have had a very positive transfer window.

Remember where we sit in the pantheon of modern football clubs - Everton are not a 'big club', whatever than means but in terms of the modern era we're a mid table side with no recent history of winning anything at all. The modern footballer has never seen us win a title.

With that in mind we're a low-end draw for players so comparing us to the RS is not a great comparison. Like it or not they win things, we don't. We're rarely in Europe, play in a shitty old stadium (much as we love her) and we're not a fashionable club, so we fish in different waters for so many reasons.

Steve Ferns
125 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:35:23
Michael, once we get through this season and show everyone we are closing in on (or hopefully have broken into) the top 6, it might be a completely different story.

Also, Brands can shift to trying to find the next Messi, and concentrate on that. This window is about giving Silva a squad he can work with.

Paul Mackay
126 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:36:25

Brian Williams
127 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:37:17
I have to say, and have a go at those who think we're amateurish in everything we do, that Brands (in particular) and Silva have done some excellent business, not just in who's in and who will be coming in but in getting rid of those gone already, and those who'll probably be going today.

I have to say to M&M. "We salute you." Well I fucking do anyway.

Oh, and don't be surprised if there IS a surprise before that fucking UPVC eyesore SLAMS SHUT!!!

Michael Lynch
128 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:37:32
James I agree. But it's interesting even to look at the last couple of windows compared to this. We were signing players who their own clubs wanted to keep mostly - Klaasen, Lookman, Pickford, Sandro, Siggy, Tosun, Keane etc.

This time around it's almost entirely players that big clubs are trying to offload as surplus to requirements. Not saying whether one approach is better than the other, just pointing it out

Paul Mackay
129 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:41:09
Michael the players we are buying in this window are better than the players you mentioned in your post, so we can call them surplus but this window is looking significantly better than the summer.
Jay Harris
130 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:41:11
Good point Steve but I still don't think weve done enough defensively for the way Silva likes to play.

I think the window looks moderately successful assuming Mina and Gomes are landed but the addition of Zouma and Drinkwater would have plugged the weaknesses we still have.

Everton is always a tease on TDD.

Don't we have a history of waiting until the window slams shut before announcing our final day signings?

We seem to be following the same pattern today.

I'll also be interested in the prepared script the new arrivals blurt for the cameras.

Anyone else noticed, unlike in all previous seasons, neither Richarlison nor Digne made any reference whatsoever to BK and his part in the deal?

A small point. But possibly, just possibly, a significant one and a pointer as to how and by who deals are now being handled.

Chris James
132 Posted 09/08/2018 at 12:46:26
I think its a little naive to say that we're leaving it late. We've been chasing Mina for well over a month with bids going in - the people in power, especially for more sought after stars, are the players and their agents.
They are in no hurry to launch into a deal when there could be higher profile clubs or more cash coming.
It's certainly not just us, look at Utd desperately shopping around for defenders last minute.

I'd also say that the World Cup and the new earlier deadline has had a concertina effect this year meaning a lot less time to get business done.

Oh and of course we did lots of early business last year...that didn't go super well did it?

If I'm honest, standing back, I'd say only Richarlison is a top quality piece of business, even at the price. The rest of our targets are interesting, but risky. Digne couldn't get into the Barca team let alone the France team, Mina couldn't get a game at Barca and we're signing him on the basis of a few WC games for Columbia, Bernard has fallen off the radar since the disastrous 2014 world cup, Zouma if we get him has just been relegated on loan to Stoke, Gomes has been a total flop at Barca - the fans are more desperate to see the back of him than we were of Klaasen - Drinkwater couldn't get a game at Chelsea and the jury is out on whether he only did well at Leicester cos he had Kante alongside him.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but I remember getting very excited about last season's signings and, like I say, they probably had more going for them on paper...

136 Michael,

Digne is a top player (25 odd caps for the world champions) as is Mina, Richarlison is already looking the business and Silva knows him well. We are also about to buy a player who has been capped by Brazil 14 times..

Compare this to the likes of Klaassen, Lookman and Sandro last summer, they hadn’t done anything of note prior to them signing for us (Dutch league is poor) and have done nothing since.

The standard of player we are buying has increased no doubt about it and as many people on here have said who in that next level up is going to Everton over a top 4 team anyway?

We all thought it would take a few windows to fix our weaknesses but this window has been a cracking start.

All kudos to Siva and Brands.

Michael Lynch
146 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:12:28
Hope you guys are right. I'm just trying to manage my own expectations really. In the case of Digne and Bernard, they no longer figure in their countries squads. Bernard hasn't played for Brazil for four years.

Anyway. I'll go back to getting excited.

Steve Ferns
147 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:14:41
Michael, how many scouts do you think Brazil send to the Ukraine? Bernard has a load of caps but paid the price for playing in the 7-1 thrashing. The fact of the matter is, at 21 he was good enough to play for Brazil in a world cup semi final. I'd also point out that Brazil have a lot of options in his position, so they can be forgiven for not keeping an eye on him.

Michael #134

You're a hard man to please! If you'd have been at the last supper I bet you'd have asked for ketchup.

I think we've had a very productive window and strengthened in the right areas with quality. Many of us were excited last summer but some of us were already asking questions about how it was going to work, before a ball was even kicked with the unbalanced transfer approach.

Brands brief was to lose the deadwood and improve the squad. He's definitely done that. Let's break it down and take a look.

Defence outgoings - Williams, Funes Mori, Garbutt, Robinson.

Defence incomings - Mina, Digne

Midfield and attacking outgoings - Klassen, Rooney, Connelly, Mirallas, Vlasic, Bolasie, Besic.

Midfield and attacking incomings - Gomes, Bernard, Richarlison.

That's 11 outgoings and there's only Robinson who we need back. The 5 new signings can all play a significant roles next season. Gomes is an immediate upgrade on Schneiderlin. Mina a better CB than what we have. Richarlison has looked our best player in pre season, and Digne has better stats that Baines in all areas of the game apart from key passes. He wouldn't have got over 20 caps for France and played for Barca, Roma and PSG if he wasn't decent. I only saw him on Sat against Valencia but he looked up for it and was solid. I've been very impressed with Digne from what he's said and looks like he'll find it easy to integrate into the squad.

Paul Mackay
149 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:20:42
If your not playing regularly for your club team your going to drop out of your international squad. It’s part of the pull of getting them to come to a club like Everton so they can get back into the team again.
Would the likes of Jagielka had as many caps for England had he not been playing every single week for Evrerton?
Michael Lynch

Gavin.

I am a hard man to please indeed. But My Nan would be a better CB that what we have, to be fair. And, as Steve Ferns has pointed out, Gomes doesn't play DM usually, so isn't a replacement for Schneids unless Silva is planning to convert him. Richarlison is brilliant, I';m delighted with him. Digne I have no idea about, but he needs to be as good as Baines was in his prime, which was pretty bloody good. Probably the best left back I've seen at Everton.

Michael (150),

I’d settle for Gueye playing in Schneiderlin’s holding position, with Gomes (or any other midfielder) playing as a box to box midfielder. This would surely offer more than when we have Gueye and Schneiderlin in the same midfield...

Derek Knox
153 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:38:00
Michael, can your Nan get to Finch Farm as soon as possible, even if she only signs a two game contract, should be enough time to integrate and acclimatise our new signings.

Even though Wolves have had a massive influx of players, which can be disruptive, and they are new to the Prem, I still don't relish the prospect of (probably) Keane and Jags being our mainstay of defence against them.

Gavin Johnson

Gomes isn't a tackle machine like Schneiderlin but he has more vision and can pick a through ball pass. He's also more capable of getting us up the pitch. For me, he is a much better partner for Gana in midfield. He's also 6ft 1" so isn't someone who is going to be bossed around. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in a midfield 3 with Sigurdsson and Gana

Michael Lynch
155 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:40:44
Danny, yes Gomes does look a good box to box option, but if Gueye is DM and Gomes plays, then it means a straight choice between Siggy and Bernard as no 10, or between Charlie and Bernard for left wing?
Michael Lynch

As above, if it's Siggy/Gomes/Gueye in the midfield 3, where does that leave Bernard?
Gavin Johnson
157 Posted 09/08/2018 at 13:47:30
Michael

It's a squad game. Benard can be played in a midfield 3 with Sigurdsson and Gana with Sig playing more as a traditional No.8. Or we can Bernard in Sigurdsson's No.10 position. Or we can have him out wide on the left with Richarlison playing on the right wing or upfront. There's lots of combinations that are very exciting. It's not like last summer buying 3 slow No.10's and trying to shoehorn them into a system that fits. Bernard is equally adept playing centrally or out wide.

I missed this at the time, but after Walcott was overlooked for the World Cup Squad there was a great article on him in the Independent. The best paragraph was this and is about all young players, pertinent to us with our World Cup 5:

"It’s a funny thing about young footballers. We laud them to the skies on their emergence. We all want to say we saw them first. We plead for them to be given time, even whilst trying to envisage the champion into which they will develop. And yet when, remarkably, they fail to live up to the hype, somehow it’s always the player’s fault rather than the hype. As with so many other hotly-tipped prodigies, it’s tempting to think about Walcott in terms of failure, inadequacy, loss. Perhaps, instead, a player who first took shape as a brilliant idea remains just that: a sunlit extrapolation, a figment, a blurry vision of pure untrammelled speed that really only existed in our heads."

(I was wondering if there was any rumours that Walcott might be off).

Dale, if we were making a big noise over Bernard or Mina then that would tell you that we're not busy. We're too busy to announce as we are busy concluding deals.

Plus they do them fancy vids on twitter these days. Let's worry in a couple of hours time, not just yet.

Michael (155),

I haven’t seen too much of Bernard, but I don’t think he has played for a while and needs to get up to speed. I have a feeling he is more of an attacking wide player than a centre mid, but maybe I am thinking that because he is small - I could be wrong, and he could be another Modric for all I know, but I thought his main quality was dribbling. In any case, i’d be happy with Gueye, Gomes and Sigurdsson in centre mid. Bernard can play his way in if he is good enough!

Fran Mitchell

There are no guaranteed starters in the team now (should the transfers go through). This is something I have never seen before. Many players can play in different positions, and in different roles which gives great flexibility of how to set the team up dependiing on the opposition. Best 11 is a thing of the past. Brands and silva really have done an amazing job at revamping what was a very mediocre squad.

If Walcott doesn't perform, there is Lookman, Richarilson who can play RWF.
If Tosun doesn't perform, the is Calvert-Lewin, Richarilson, Walcott, Lookman who can play CF. Niasse off the bench.
If Richarilson doesn't perform, there is Bernard, Lookman who can play LWF.
If Sigurdsson doesn't perform, there is Gomes, Bernard, Davies who can play CAM.
If Gomes doesn't perform there is Bernard, Davies, Sigurdsson who can play B-to-B
If Schneiderlin doesn't perform, there is Gueye, Baningime, Davies who can play CDM
If Digne doesn't perform there is Baines for LB.
If Mina doesn't perform there is Keane, Jags, Holgate.
If Zouma doesn't perform, there is Keane, Jags, Holgate.
If Coleman doesn't perform there is Kenny for RB.

Gavin Johnson
173 Posted 09/08/2018 at 14:19:44
I think I'd allow Dowell to go out on loan, Sam. Given Bernard will be ahead of him and there's the possibility that Lookman might be played more centrally.

He hasn't done anything in preseason either. He still drifts out of the game and isn't noticed unless he delivers a moment of magic.

Derek Knox
174 Posted 09/08/2018 at 14:29:03
Gavin Johnson, how very accurate, regarding Dowell, I am quite a fan of his, but have noticed, as did Forest fans did on loan last season, he has a tendancy to 'disappear' in games.

If he loses possession, he seldom goes looking for the ball, to get it back, hopefully Silva will be able to coach a different approach.

Sam Hoare
175 Posted 09/08/2018 at 14:31:14
Gavin, I agree. Needs to work on being more involved in all aspects of the game, which I think he has improved at.

Still a talented youngster and think he'd benefit more from a full season in the championship to sitting on our bench, or not even.

Maybe give him a few months with Bielsa at leeds from Feb-May.

If we do get Gomes and Mina, does that make us a club for Barcalona cast offs. How do we feel about that?
Aidan Baker
183 Posted 09/08/2018 at 14:42:26
Dowell is a cultured player, personally I would like to see him exposed to the skills of Richarlison and Bernard in the Everton first team squad, it should make him a better player.

Connolly needs game time and define his best position. Ipswich did him good and hopefully Wigan will do the same.

Though M & M are purchasing players in their prime or very close to it, I like most Evertonians would like to see our talented youth integrated into the mix. There are young players on Everton's books that many clubs would bite your hand off to have (like Lookman). If you are World champion at your age group then your should be on course to being the best, playing with the best and for the best - DCL, Dowell, Davies, Kenny, Connolly and the aforementioned Lookman are in that bracket.

It was stated before that Everton had bought players from Barca who weren't starters, yet these players were purchased by the Catalan club for their potential to get in the fist XI. Potential is the key word.. you buy potential - technical, physical and mentally strong footballers.

It is the task of the Manager/coach to improve these purchases and our youth players to become something together. I personally see a vision in the M & M plan, but they need a bit of time, motivation, tuition and some luck to become good players molded into a good team. Over to you Mr Silva..

Delighted that Besic has been moved on and £6 million is a good price. I never saw the point of him...temperamental headless chicken. Ive been very impressed with the transfer window so far, except for the delay in getting the new CB/s in. The club have managed to offload a lot of the excess weight and as Fran mentioned earlier we now have proper competition for places and cover for injuries/illnesses. I still think we have one surprise on the way in the next 2 hours. Fingers crossed.

Dowell may have talent. But he has maybe one season now to flourish before going the way of many a fabled Everton youth product; Ebrell, Branch, Jeffers, Cadamateri etc.

The contract extension is a safeguard, and should see us get a fee if he doesn’t make it this season.

I know of very few players were multiple year loans has produced a player worth keeping.

Connelly, Robinson and Dowell all in this boat.

If there is a hope for Dowell he is now surrounded by many players in his position of different styles. Can he pick up how Bernard plays despite lacking physical size? Can he understand how hard Richarlison works to get the ball back?

A another loan would tell me his time is up.

If it wasn't for Rodrigo spoiling a great statement. (4 sub appearances for a grand total of 36 minutes on the pitch)

Honestly, you wait 140 for one Brasilian and all of sudden two come along at the same time.

OK - forget Muller, he never signed but I cannot think of any others. You are going to prove me wrong aren't you. I know.

Apologies if I have the loan info wrong, but this is what is on Sky Sports:

The deadline for English clubs to make permanent transfers has now arrived!

Remember, EFL clubs have until August 31 to make loan signings, and players can still leave England foreign clubs before their deadlines arrive.

It all looks very choreographed and planned, professional even!

They acted on the thoughts and desires of most Evertonians.

Bernard is the crown jewel, a play maker from the wing, Arteta before the ACL and is in line with the fashion. Neymar, Messi, Hazard, Ozil etc. all like to make it happen from the wing then in field.

Gomes, it’s a punt, a hopeful one too, injury record is up there with professional sick notes. The upside is high if he stays fit.

Mina, well he’s fucked us around for most of the window so he’s gonna have to prove his worth.

A huge pick-me-up, from the pre-season we’ve had.

Last year when we sold Lukaku the comment was where were the goals going to come from?

Answer was with Siggy, Rooney and Klaassen then they would burst from midfield and score 10 each and so make up for the loss of Lukaku.

With Tosun, Walcott and Richarlison up front then there is a chance of them scoring 30 goals between them, but I just feel that what we have now behind them are more likely to score goals than the midfield from last year. And with just 3 goals from defenders in the league, I think the defence will weigh in with more this year.

DK, onky the premier league can confirm the deal. I assume we got the paperwork in on time, as we would have heard otherwise.

So, the premier league doesn’t have much staff for this. They go through each deal one by one, in the order they came in. This is fellaini territory and that took 7 hours to confirm but assume there was some sleeping in that period.

Patience my friend. It’ll be fine.

Away to Leicester last season we had 6 players in the starting eleven who were over 30 years old - Baines, Williams, Jagielka, Rooney, Mirallas and Lennon.

We now have only 3 over 30 year olds in the squad. Steckelenberg, Baines and Jagielka.

Besic deal to Leeds broken down to. So Besic and Bolasie are stil here for at least another 6 months. It's certainly a task for M&M to clear all the below par crap from the squad. Our Signings at least in 2018 (inc 2 in Jan) have at least been the standard we require. Koeman/Walsh should be fined.

Steve @301, what do you foresee the starting eleven at Wolves to be, I'd be surprised due to the lateness of the window in relation to Saturday, if any will make the team a couple on the bench possibly.

I know Wolves have had a lot of new faces, but have done well pre-season in comparison to us, not confident about our defence at all.

Pickford
Coleman. Mina. Zouma. Digne
Gomes/Gueye

Subs: Baines, Keane, Lookman, Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin, Holgate

Still to leave this window: Bolasie, Besic, Vlasic

Seems like we've had a good window.
The Guardian say on the link from newsnow Everton sign 4. but then when click it say Everton sign 3 on deadline day but submitted paperwork just before 5pm... I'm guessing no one knows yet about Zouma.

Anyway good transfer window again, happy with richalison and Bernard might inject a little more pace in the middle.

After last summer I was thinking the players seemed good we spent a lot of money but they just seemed too slow last summer.

Anyway hoping for a better season be nice to break that top 6, but I'll just settle for seeing better football, last season was probably the worst for me to watch, since the Scot gemil and Walter Smith days...

Lookman
Besic

Someone from the club has to confirm to the PL that the actual deal was done before 5pm, and hold up their right hand and say "Cross my heart and hope to die" that they're not telling porkies. The Zouma deal must be the tenth and last to be scrutinised.
Steve Ferns

Mark what makes you think Silva rips the pre season work up and goes with an unprepared back 3?

I would expect a disappointing side:

Pickford

Coleman Zouma Keane Digne

Gueye Schneiderlin
Walcott Sigurdsson Richarlison

Tosun

Rest of them being in the bench.

Joe @307,

The window is shut to buy and loan now, but we can still sell to European teams up until midnight on the 31st August, plus we can still loan players to Championship and below up until the 31st August.

So me might not necessarily have to wait till January to offload the players you mentioned or any other players that we want to offload.

Neil, yes on Zouma. Also Mina is just back from the World Cup. He’ll need a pre-season so expect him to figure properly in a couple of weeks time.

Bernard will be at the same level as Mina or might even need longer.

Gomes will be two months at least.

Zouma should be ready and just needs adjustments.

That’s my thinking anyway.

Ernie, it's still not been released whether he is or isn't an Everton player, Sky Sports saying it will be tomorrow when an announcement will be made.

I wonder who we might have ended up with if Allardyce and Walsh were still here? Lamine Kone and Slimani perhaps?

One of the best deadline days I can remember.

If I’m honest I still think we’ll lose to Wolves and that 7th this season would be a good achievement. These players will take a while to get match fit and form a cohesive unit. But there’s a plan at work here. A strategy I see where there wasn’t one last year.

Younger, hungry players with pace and power and some real guile. Pretty much everything I hoped for. The foundations forming for a team that can really challenge nearer the top.

We’ll get a few tonkings I expect. At least one of our new players will disappoint. But I think it’s gonna be a lot more fun.

Well done Everton. COYB!

Ernie Baywood

I still think we'll finish 8th or 7th too, Sam. When you think about it we're a pretty unreasonable lot - we expect big investment for minimal return.

But my hope is that our ownership see this as a long term plan. It's the only conclusion you can reach. If the aim was to hold position and stay in the gravy train then you could do that on a lot less. It looks like we want to make progress and maybe be placed in the event that one or two have a shocker.

Sam Hoare
334 Posted 09/08/2018 at 23:18:16
Damian, I think we might lose to Wolves because they too have some pretty good players and a good manager. They’ve been excellent in preseason and mostly have the same team that know each other very well and are high on confidence from romping the Championship.

We on the other hand were dire in preseason and have half a squad bereft of confidence and the other half who’ve just met each other.

I hope we win of course but without checking I’d be fairly sure we’re not the bookies favourite. Negative or realistic?

On hols and just getting caught up...well ride me sideways what a bloody brilliant deadline day!! hats off to everyone involved in getting these bits of transfer work done. Bonis of Zouma possibly being done in the morning!!

A MASSIVE improvement on what Walsh-ite done in transfers. Brands (inntandem with Silva) has certainly done his job..identitfied the weak areas and recruited, not just spending for the sake of it. A lot more pace and agressive attacking force now.

Sam, aye I think the bookies have Wolves as favourites, which in a way is understandable; a stable squad and set up vs a new manager and new squad. I'm on the fence, I don't expect us to win but I'm certainly not gonna rule it out.

Been thinking about the dire preseason and I have said before its not really sensible to gauge things based on a preason. Its more a fitness exercise and getting used to new tactics and systems. Worth bearing in mind too that its probably a lot more difficult to properly give your all when its not really a competitive game, the result means very little (for the players that have a near certain starting XI place at least). I think we can expect a lot more focus when its a proper, competitive league game. I'm expecting it to be a month or so before we really start seeing the gaffers ideas and the squading clicking into place.
Regardless, things are going to be a lot more entertaining and exciting than last year. Surely we've taken some big strides in the right direction!!

I think I can safely bid you all a pleasant nights kip after todays dealings. COYB!!

Fascinating summary of everybody's net spend from the transfer window:

1. Liverpool - £155.4m
2. Chelsea - £87.3m
3. West Ham - £83.3m4
4. Fulham - £68.1m
5. Wolves - £64.1m
6. Everton - £60.6m
7. Arsenal - £59.8m
8. Brighton - £53.6m
9. Man Utd - £51.6m
10. Soton - £44.5m
11. Burnley - £29.5
12. Bourne. - £29.4m
13. Hudders - £29.3m
14. Cardiff - £28.5m
15. Man City - £25.7m
16. Palace - £9.5m
17. Leicester - £5.9m
18. Tottenham - £-2.2
19. Watford - £-13.4
20. Barcodes - £-28.7m

So Spurs, Watford and Newcastle were the net sellers.

I forgot to mention and fans take note!

Expect some "Fancy Steppin" when our new signings hit the back of the net. Bernard will do his Samba. Mina does a kind of hip wiggle. And Richarlison does his "pigeon dance" ?

Will underwear be thrown on the pitch?

Paul Bernard

Like many Evertonian's, I am normally very critical about the club. They always manage to raise expectations then let us down spectacularly.

This window however, everyone from Moshiri to Brands to Silva, including the negotiating and admin teams have played it all well beyond expectations. Not just the in's but the deadwood going too.

Fair play blues, you managed a three window turnaround in a matter of weeks. As fans we must surely be patient with the new team on and off the pitch, this could be the start we looked for last year.

Dermot Byrne
347 Posted 10/08/2018 at 11:17:03
The other thing to consider is this is only the first example of M and M in a transfer window...and only weeks after starting.

I see world ☮️ and an end to poverty as well as an Everton phoenix rising on the banks of the Mersey.

Can supply evidence for all 3 visions (well only the last one to be honest).
