New deal for Mampala

Manassé Mampala has signed a new one-year contract with Everton.

The 18-year-old forward was part of the Under-23s team that reclaimed the Premier League 2 title and won the Premier League Cup this past season.

“It feels great to sign this new deal,” he told evertonfc.com. “It shows the hard work I've put in over the years has paid off.

“Being in the Under-23s squad last season was fantastic, especially as we had such success.

“Now I just want to keep working hard, play as many games as I can next season, and develop every part of my game.”

Mike, it's a puzzler really. His appearance stats for last season are minimal, suggesting some fairly serious injury problem that goes unmentioned by the Echo.

In fact, they give the complete opposite impression with their bog-standard: "The 18-year-old impressed as part of David Unsworth's side last term which won both the Premier League 2 title and the Premier League Cup later in the campaign."

Oh yeah? 4 sub appearances and no goals in PL2; barely a handful more (and 1 goal) in the various cup competitions...

I think there's video highlights of most U23 games if you have the time to wade through them. It would take a bit of work but you could start by searching our Under-23s page for 'Mampala' to see when he played, then searching YouTube or EvertonTV for each match.

Unfortunately, they don't always wear the same shirt numbers, their official squad numbers only being worn in the Checkatrade Trophy games. But their shirt numbers are listed for each game on TransferMarkt and at Youthhawk.

I look forward to reading your report... 😜

Maybe I'm wrong about the injury inference, which makes his limited playing time that much more puzzling. He was on the bench as an unused sub in 10 more games. That still leaves 15 out of 38 games total at U23 level last season where he was not in the squad.

Oh, and one more thing: he played in both Lancashire Senior Cup games last season, scoring in the second, at Rochdale. I have these detailed with the Under-18s as that's where the bulk of the team came from on the night. But he did not play in any other U18 games.

Going by the records supplied by Michael (2), Mampala played in the game against Spurs last season at Goodison Park. This game was on a Sunday afternoon, Everton won 6-0, and Mampala came on for the last 20 minutes.

I'm going by the report of the game, no disrespect to the lad but I have no recollection of him. I was at this game, the wind spoilt the match, Dowell scored from a corner, helped heavily by the strong wind, and in fact it was given as an own goal by the goalkeeper.

If the kid is getting a new deal then the hierarchy see something, let's trust in the men who are paid to do this!

Everton's young players carrying the heaviest burden of expectation are rewarded with contracts longer than 12 months so maybe he has something but the club are waiting to be impressed.

The few sightings I had of him, he played on the left wing so he had plenty of competition for that spot in Gordon and Broadhead while Sambou and Holland commanded the central striking positions.

Just looked at the Everton squad on the main website. Unless it's not up to date and contracts have been extended, quite a few players who have been marked in the past as players with potential have contracts expiring at the end of June.

Dowell, Gordon, Bowler, Stekelenburg, Collins and Connolly.

Interesting to see what happens with them.

However, would be interesting to see how Mampala shapes up now Sambou has gone. I assume he'll get more chances to play.

Ian #7,

Just a note on Stekelenburg's contract: I think it runs for another year, through June 2020.

Although the error seems hard to eradicate – we even show it incorrectly on our squad page here on ToffeeWeb!

Michael, I believe the lad has been backup for the u23s for most of the season. I think he was promoted to make way for the slightly younger Simms. It's hard to be sure, but he also seems to have had injury issues this season and perhaps there's been a setback there.

Next season, Hornby will be the main striker and he's 19. Simms is able to play with him as Hornby has a different skill set. Therefore, it makes sense for Mampala to get another year to see if he can force his way into the side.

If the powers that be really fancied him, though, they'd have given him a 3-year deal. So it's not a ringing endorsement, it's a contract showing caution on Everton's part.
